Can anyone make any recommendations for things worth doing and seeing in and around Edinburgh? I'm going to be living there for the next year, and I've never been there before.

I visited Edinburgh once while in Germany, real beautiful city. The view from the university there is fantastic. Hiking around that area should be great, I was staying in Bad Laasphe when visiting and the forests and the mountains around there have been something of a memory.
Not sure if any of this helps. Where around would you be moving to OP? Sind Sie Deutsch oder?

I spent a few days in Edinburgh so I'm not sure what sort of advice would be useful to you for a longer-term stay.

Some obvious choices would be Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh Castle, although those are more one-offs than anything.

The Royal Scottish Academy and the Scottish National Gallery are right next to each other and display a variety of art if that's your thing. And of course the National Museum of Scotland does pretty well for natural history, science, etc.

For more obscure recommendations, if you get a chance try the Arcade Bar on Cockburn Street, they have good whisky and haggis. Also there's a Genting casino near the main bus station on the other side of town if you have the inclination.

Check out the whiskey museum, the bars in the old town, museums are great. That's the touristy stuff. Otherwise I would just walk around in the city due to its beauty and charm. You can also go hiking in the areas around the city.
