Hello /trv/,

starting in April I will be employed in Prague for at least 2 years. Currently I am looking for a flat/room/flatmates.
Anything I should be aware of? (estate agent commission, are monthly expenses included in rent, etc)

Would it be recommendable to search for places in the city or closer to the suburbs(work is ~15km from the city centre)?
Personally I tend to the latter since a shorter commute would mean less time wasted and gives me the option to use my bicycle to reach the workplace independently from buses.

Advanced question:
I like collecting and shooting old military firearms(~1847-1950). With my European Firearms Pass and a written invitation from a shooting range I can bring my guns over the border. This however is intended to be for a few days at most so unless I acquire a new invitation each week, things might get complicated. Should I ask the Foreign Police about a permanent permit or could I just do the course for the Czech firearm license to cover my guns brought from home?

But for now finding a nice place to live is the most important issue.

Just look for a place in the "suburbs" - they're all towns and cities in their own right. It's easy to get into town. The central town is not of interest to locals anyway.
>>
>>1216122
What district will your work in? City centre means nothing to me. The entire city is walkable, biking accessible, so rideable whether trolleys or metro too. But, since you will do all seasons, you might actually get real advice by looking on a map and picking your neighborhood of work, like "Mala Strana" for instance.
I'm going to say that there are some sketchy folks in this city, so be specific what you want out of your home, from a walkable evening to expats who speak your specific language to full immersion. It's an odd place, and I think you'd want money to get some real safety.
>>
>>1216127
Thanks for the advice. My workplace is just to the southeast of Prague.
So far I've looked for flats in and around of Jesenice, Pruhonice and Prague 11.

>>1216129
Just past the city border along highway 1/E56. I would prefer "immersion" to expat culture, since I learned some Czech at university and would like to get more fluent. So initally I will need to use both English and German frequently but I hope that after a few months I can use Czech for basic day to day conversations.

if I take a bike ride through baltimore, maryland, how likely is it that I'll get robbed or attacked?
I won't lie I'm interested in taking a "slum tour" of some of these areas, but I'm white and don't want to be targeted. I would assume in any other place with a large black population that if you just mind your business and don't act like you're looking for trouble you'll be fine but I know this area is a unique case.

>how likely is it that I'll get robbed or attacked?
Depends on what you're wearing/what you have on you, what you look like (skin color), and what you're doing (riding a bike, walking, or riding the bus). Riding the bus would be the safest however you won't get to see much from the windows. I would recommend riding a bike with a route planned beforehand. I would probably put money on you getting robbed if you're walking. If you plan on walking try and have a local with you (and by local I mean black). If you're walking or biking through these neighborhoods you are very likely to get verbally harassed and/or followed so prepare yourself for that.

tl;dr: don't do that
>>
>>1215954
plot twist; it's an electric bike with a max speed of 20 mph. still a bad idea?
>>
Dress like shit, don't bring anything worth more than $20, and don't look that out of place and you'll be OK.

So I quit my job and as they didn't want me to work for them anymore, nor go to a competitor , I have been given 2 months of 'gardening leave'. This means I'm contractually obliged to work for the company but they don't want me to be in the office- nor give me work to do.

Where would you go?

Job search and returning/career life excluded, what would you do travel wise?

I'm 25 and have never travelled solo before, but I'd be up for it. Is 25 a normal age for 'youth' hostels?

I've been doing the same boring job for 3 years and it reached breaking point without me haiving found a new one, and I have a real desire for some sort of (sorry for the extreme cliche) challenge or awakening.

Asia? Europe?

I'm based in London.

I'd take a class, get some new certification. What is your business that there are competitors? This is so odd.
>>
>>1215829
I don't think hostels actually have an age limit (or at least I don't think it's a standard). I believe they're only called "youth" hostels because they're designed for low-budget travelers, and guess what age group has the least amount of money to their name? Typically young people.

I'm a whole three years older than you, and I've stayed in hostels. I don't think I could be considered "young" by any measure.

It looks like Anon wants to get from Montenegro to Greece without passing through Albania or Serbia, so would be taking the ferry from Bar to Bari, and then from Bari to Patras.

Hello /trv/
Just looking for the best way to travel between these cities?

Im listing them in the order I think might be the best in terms of reduced travel time
amsterdam
copenhagen
berlin
prague
paris
venice

Im starting in Amsterdam and have 3 weeks available. I know the train network is good but maybe flights are better in some cases.

Even if you have experience travelling between 2 of these cities, any info would be appreciated.

>>
Fly to copenhagen. Go to Amstetdam by bus/ferry. Then berlin with bus or train. Go on to prague by train, then vienna because you need to stop there to get to venice (take the night train from vienna to venice). Then I'd fly to Paris

Or

You start in Paris, go to Amsterdam by train (fast and expensive) or bus (slow and cheap). Then Copenhagen, Berlin and straight down south (Prague, Vienna, Venice). If you have the time, I'd reccomend a day trip to Bratislava. If you arrive at vienna in the morning and take the night train to Venice, you have enough time for Bratislava. It's only a one hour train ride from vienna. Or you can take the danube ferry too.

Just ask if you want to know something. Where do you come from?
>>
>>1215630
Thank you

Im travelling from Ireland but my girlfriend is coming from Peru and the cheapest place to land is amsterdam. Ill see if she can land in paris instead.

Thanks for the info about the vienna-venice train, even through google I wasnt sure if it existed...

I made a screenshot from the railways homepage.

Your initiary is fine too, but change paris and venice. A flight from venice to paris costs between 50 and 200€, that's how I'd do it.

Turkemistan is central Asia.

That said, getting a visa may be a hassle, but shouldn't be impossible. You may have to get an official guide as well, North Korea style, unless that has been changed in the past few years.

Go to Bacalar, stay at the Yak Lake House. Spend 2 nights there and book ahead, because it's always sold out. The Yak in Playa Del Carmen is amazing for meeting people if you want to spend time there too, really cool spot.

Then go to Mazatlan on the west coast for Carnaval next week. It's the biggest carnaval in Mexico - locals say that the one in Veracruz really blows.

Hey /trv/,

I'm going to Mexico for a month in June and then flying over to Tanzania. What should I do in Central America for thirty days? I've traveled south of the border a handful of times, but this will be my first visit to Mexico. I'll be flying into the capital on June 26th and then flying back out around July 20th.

Mostly looking for suggestions on Mexico. I'm going to be staying with one of my friends in Tanzania, who's there with the Peace Corps and is fluent in Swahili. He lives on Zanzibar Island and has traveled a bit around the whole country. However, still down for suggestions, especially relating to Kilimanjaro. Is it possible to climb part of the mountain or get a decent experience in the park without paying a shit-ton of money?

Also should mention that I make about $1,500 per month via a couple of freelance writing gigs, so I need to be able to access the Internet for between five and ten hours every week.
>>
>>1215123
I'm from northern Mexico, but I've been to the capital many times. I can recommend you some places to go.

You're gonna be staying there a month, so you'll have plenty of time to explore the city, but keep in mind that that city is fucking huge. There are a lot of places you can look for on the internet, but from my experience, you should definitely check out the National Anthropology Museum, the "Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo" museum, the "Bellas Artes" palace, and Mexico's city National Film Archive called the "Cineteca Nacional".

Just to name a few, I think you'd enjoy those places, but also try talking to the people there to recommend you less known dope places to hang, people are quite nice down there.

Lastly, try all the street food you can, very cheap and tasty. Be careful, tho', you could get sick if you're not used to generally spicy, or greasy food.
>>
>>1215281

Thanks for the advice!

I lived in India for a year and a half, so spicy food isn't nearly as much of a problem for me as it used to be. Mexican food is probably one of the biggest draws for the trip, considering the few "authentic" dishes I've had here in the States.

Do you have any suggestions on places outside of Mexico City? I definitely don't want to spend my whole trip in one place. However, I don't have much of an idea of where to go or what to do. I'm interested in nature, bits and pieces of history, and meeting ordinary, friendly people. If I can find an affordable place to rent a motorcycle from, I might go on a multi-day tour. I went dirtbiking in some volcano sands in Nicaragua and had a blast. Always love riding, so I hope I can find some reasonable and safe options.

Does anyone have tips on getting my Spanish up to par? I know the basics of sentence structure from a month-long Colombia trip I took in 2015 and from Nicaragua and Costa Rica in 2016, but would like to expand my vocabulary and get some language experience.

Please recommend some good places to visit in Germany.

- no time limit
- ~10k

How long do you think I can stay in Germany with ~10k? I don't mind cheap hotels, hostels, dormitory, etc.

Please don't recommend other countries. I don't care how beautiful other countries (e.g., Switzerland, France, Iceland) are.

Thanks!

Depends on what you're interested in. Big cities have the night and city life in general, while smaller cities manged to preserve a more authentic experience of German culture.
>>
>>1215019
I recommend the Wilmersdorfer mosque in Berlin
>>
These are the big cities worth visiting
>Berlin
>München
>Dresden
>Leipzig
>Stuttgart
>Frankfurt
>Köln

Smaller cities worth noting are
>Görlitz
>Garmisch-Partenkirchen
>Potsdam
>Schwerin
>Würzburg
>Bamberg
>Kiel
>Passau
>Heidelberg und Freiburg

Of course there are many more cities worth visiting but those are some that I really enjoyed. There are also quite a few national parks worth visiting. One thing people don't really realize is that almost all cities were heavily bombed in the second world war so not many city centers are old and original. I know you said not to include other countries but Austria was somewhat spared from the destruction so you could look into that too.

To answer your question, tide height normally runs on a two-week cycle due to the lunar cycle taking about 28 days. Just wait it out.

There are two low tides every day i most places in the world (sloshing in a few restricted areas like bays and seas with restricted inlets can change that, but for a given stretch of open beach, it's what happens. Tides advance about an hour each day -- if there is a low tide around 10 in the morning one day, it will be low ROUGHLY around 11 the next day.

High tides are highest and low tides lowest around full and new moons, tidal change is less extreme around the half-moons, though local conditions as noted above can also cause a lag in this. Here's a lunar phases calendar: http://www.moonconnection.com/moon_phases_calendar.phtml

The AVERAGE level of the water , disregarding tides, can vary with the wind -- strong winds blowing from the ocean over a prolonged time pile up water against the land, prolonged breezes blowing from the land do the opposite.

Here is a tide table for Pattaya, as an example -- if you are not going there, google "tide table (name of place you are going)
