So I have been invited into a group that are developing a new rpg to go onto the market and I have been asked to give some feedback on the game and its themes. The game seems to be a generic steampunk style game but the creator has decided the game is very gender focused

in his words "the game will have a mechanism which "rewards" female characters in some way. Is it correct or desirable for the game to almost treat the genders as two seperate races (like dwarves and elves) with different inherent abilities and dispositions (or is that actually reductive)?

I have been GMing RPGs of all sorts for 35 years and I have seen many girls and women take on the roles of male PCs, but far fewer men do the same with female PCs. I'd love to create a game that somehow made me (a chap, don't you know) feel compelled to play a female character, but maybe it is my shortcoming that I don't do so more often, and not the game's responsibility at all?"

I think its a pretty bad idea but I am not sure how to tell him without triggering him, could you help a player out?

Could you post some examples of what they are doing? It sounds like their heart is in the right place, but I agree that they might be going about it the wrong way. Without examples though it's hard to say.

It's not really a shortcoming since there is no sort of checklist that needs crossed off for what kind of characters you play. As long as your group is on board, you could play Urist McBeardaxe ever single session, and it wouldn't be a moral failing on your part.

as of right now its all in the air. The person in charge wants to get a meeting in at some point but I think this topic is a bit of a sensitive one and I worry if I sate this I will be pretty much ostracized from the local gaming scene

When is failing okay? Which kinds of failures are bad? Which are acceptable or even fun?

For example, what if you score in some game system a critical hit and the enemy does negate that with a critical parry? How annoying is that? Or what if you spend some kind of hero point and still fail due to a crappy roll?

true but the point could be made that a system like D&D avoids things such as a critical parry negating a good attack roll. also, Deathwatch RPG has a form of hero points that guarantees something will happen, even on a failed roll.

Sometimes you try shit and and it works, sometimes it doesn't. Failure's always okay. The important thing isn't success or failure, it's the context of such.

For instance. Failing a spot check to notice some goddamn obscure thing that the DM is stupidly enough using as a bar to further the story? That's bad because it's a single point of failure that the DM is going to use to restrain the story. That's bad.

The hero fails a roll and gets knocked the fuck out by the villain? That's cool, everyone loses, then they get back up, git gud, and come back harder. Ranma Saotome didn't beat Ryu Kumon the first or even second time. That's cool because the story still moves forward, it just becomes about finding the strength, inner or outer, to defeat the villain.

What's important isn't success or failure. What's important is moving the story forward in some way or another, and letting success or failure determine which way the story moves.

Looking to make a setting with a multitude of factions and races, magic, swords, sorcery, and shotguns.

Specifically, I want to make a setting that's equal parts Wild West as it is traditional fantasy. Kind of like how Fallout: New Vegas equally blended Fallout's kitchen sink nuclear wasteland setting with wild west flair and themes.

I am looking for a core combat mechanic for an RPG that allows for quick turns, but also allows for a wide range of player stats and has variable damage. Anyone know of any games I can look at with systems like this?

So, what systems would be good for an RPG set during the Vietnam War? I know about Recon, but it is out-of-print, rare, and I just checked Amazon, secondhand copies are ungodly expensive. I've considered generic systems like GURPS (which has several military-themed supplements) or BESM (mainly because BESM is a very light and easy-to-use system), but I've also considered making a quick-and-dirty rules-light D6 system.

What should I do for a campaign set in 'Nam and have any of you guys ran or played in games set during 20th and 21st Century military conflicts?

My vote goes to CoC or the new Delta Green.

Campaign-wise, I suppose you just follow your players squad through the war, whether they are hardcore MACV-SOG operators or just general grunts. You could also run a game set during the Battle of An Lộc, so that players interested in fighting in and alongside tanks could do so.
In my own opinion, having your players be MACV-SOG would make it much easier due to the greater degree of freedom they would have, which is much more conducive to an interesting game.

Single axis. Alignment is not a descriptor of your character's behavior per se, but which side of a cosmic war he has aligned himself with, or not in the case of neutrals.

You could have optimistic vs cynical in a party of all good teammates. After all, usually you want to save the world or something, so it makes sense for everyone on the team to be good, so its better to replace the good vs evil with how your character views the fight against evil.

Energy and Fabricate are some of the most boring mechanics every created, the art is almost exclusively terrible outside of a few of the lands, and inventions are an embarrassing money grab.
