I have been working on this small town 80s setting for about a year.

The amount my heart leapt to see a thread about it on /tg/...

The party are HS age investigators in some kind of "Mystery Club", since the town has a history of strange disappearances, but there havn't been any for over fifty years.

Until they start again...

I've put alot of effort into the details, old photo printouts, newspaper clippings, giving the PCs journals to keep track of the investigation on the first session, etc

Starting next september...

It's really been a labour of love, the town and surrounding woods have so many characters and things to see, their investigation can go pretty much any way they want, although there is a running plot advancing at whatever pace they choose. Sort of like in open world games, you can explore all the side quests at leisure and do plot missions when you feel like it.

I have a few contingency plans for if they get stuck but won't be spoon-fed information, a metric fuckton of synth music, hopefully original/interesting NPCs and spirits, descriptions of scenes and locations, and my GF is happy to do the female character voices and be rules helper. (I knocked up a slightly altered FATE mod)

My one shameful guilt about the setting is that one of the main antagonists is using the artwork of Holo from Spice and Wolf, if someone recognises it then I think it will take away from the experience.

What do you do to mentally prepare yourself to play a new character /tg/?

I usually discuss the concept with others, and use our combined observations to come up with a short list of qualities and quotes to help me get into how this person would act

After that I repeat those in my head with an open mind for a few days as I go about my business. I will also occasionally image hypothetical scenes that highlight aspects of the character that serve as guideposts to getting situated so I can call on them in the lead up to a game session.

If it is a character concept or game setting game where a particular artistic, literary, or cinematic style is called for then I will take things a step further and start running an internal monologue appropriate to the style in question.

I've found an example of someone doing their job while going through such an internal monologue to serve as an example of what I mean. (this man reviews cars for a living.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25gSLDx_2m0

So. What do you do /tg/?

I on the other hand, tend not to discuss the concept with others, although I can certainly see why you would do that. Don't get me wrong, I can often have just as much of a hard time getting into the headspace of other people, but I'm also a distanced observer and a "collector of thought processes" most of the time. So what I do instead is I go through my mental database of all the shit I've seen, and throw the most relevant references that I can come up with into a blender, to pick through them later. Which is why I tend to base my characters on existing templates, and say "they're like character X" even more than most other people.

When I have this raw material, I generally mold it into the rough shape that I want the character to have and I'm usually pretty much done. I'm far too much of a reactive person to have a completely formed character prepared entirely in advance. A LOT of character development happens on-the-fly as I'm playing the game, as I only tend to discuss my character concept during the game. Playing on IRC and having a dedicated out-of-character chat allows me to do this without interrupting anyone. So that's the time at which I might discuss what sort of behavior may or may not be appropriate for the character, and try to compare and contrast them with the other player characters, as well as what is expected of their social group or race.

One more thing I usually try to do is have a voice for my character. Whether that's an actor or a specific role that actor played, I try to look up clips of that person or character talking on Youtube, or even watch/listen to entire things they were in. Even knowing what my character sounds like when they talk can help me come up with lines for them, an appropriate way of speaking, and even non-verbal cues and gestures while they're talking. I try to listen to listen to these clips not just before the game but before each session.
>>
>>49938008

how do you manage to play htat character while also chatting in OOC and listening to voice clips similar to the voice of your character and keep the three separate so you don't, for example, have your character say "I just shot marven in the face" when they should say "I'll have a quarter pounder with cheese, and a milkshake, hey what do you want X? I'm buying.".
>>
>>49938599
Because in text games, there are periods of time when you're waiting for other players or the GM to finish typing their message, which can in fact take a few minutes. Which gives everyone else the time to participate in OOC chat and gives ME the time to compartmentalize my thoughts.

God(s) in your campaigns, how do you prefer them?

1. Existing, but completely uninterested in mortal affairs.
2. Existing, occasionally interfering in mortal affairs.
3. Existing, as people who ascended to godhood.
4. Dead/gone, but existed as one of the above.
5. Non-existent/purely imaginary.
6. Other (please explain).

Option 1, without a doubt. As distant and mysterious as possible to the point where people can live their entire lives without seeing evidence of the gods, and that there could be other explanations for the powers wielded by those chosen by the gods.

Whether or not they really exist depends on what setting I'm running, though.
>>
>>49937725
I generally use 2. I like the gods to feel distant but for the world to very clearly bear the marks of their shaping it.
>>
>>49937725

This has been discussed at length over several threads, Podcasts, forums, etc. It's a novel idea, but no one ever actually does it because it's always something you run for higher level adventurers, or it doesn't quite fit the setting. Even if someone did do it, it's unlikely that we'll get too significant of a story from it.

Now, finding a way to add a level of depth to Titanic, unintelligent monsters besides being Huge and Nigh-unkillabale, that's something I'd love to see.

Control is still pretty weak in modern. Would cards like this help to make control more viable in modern, or would you prefer them to ban cards from linear decks instead. What ideas do you have to make control more playable in modern?

How will the filthy degenerate Eldar manage to hold out against the might of the Imperium? They are forced to put civilians onto the battlefield.

So is the Imperium. And their civilians are still better than the Imperiums civilians at waging war.
>>
>>49936987
Eldar civilians are a well-trained militia, each one possibly hundreds of years old and many of them may have been on a Warrior Path before changing.

Imperium's concripts were literally scraped off the street of some backwater Hive. They get little to no training and their equipment is actually more expensive than they are.

Guardians should still be WS3/BS3

I don't see any problem with that. Life is many things, but not particularly nice. Nature is both butteflies and flowers and wolves and those freaky deep sea fish. While great and beautiful and necesary, nature will also fuck you up if you fool around with it.

So I`ll be starting my CSM army pretty soon, but since I have pretty limited funds for now, I had an idea- I`ll buy the Dark Vengeance starer and make DA into Chaos Space Marines. But here`s the question- is it possible for a beginner to make DA into CSM, and if not, is it possible to field both the Crimson Slaughter and the Fallen Angels in one army?

Think of a quest or a plot centering around an arranged marriage. Hard mode - bride and groom don't hate each other.

Ezpz.
Bride gives away her brideprice to her old family, as they need it. Husband takes offence, as it was supposed to be for her, and becomes heartbroken. The bride now attempts to track down the gifts in order to cheer her dearest up, which she finds her family already sold them.
From there the bride can be a questgiver or adventurer or whatever fits the quest you are going for.
>>
Well ofcourse the basic transport and protect and what have you from getting them there to having them have struggles with the wedding themselves.

From a stagemaster with a pompousness that'd make even the toughest sub-urbian footballmother whince, all the way to the cheap hired labour from the nearbye goblin village getting ready and planning a revolt or strike on the night of festivities themselves.

Or you could have trouble with the bride and groom in an arranged marriage, but the king hasn't just given her hand to one fellow. There's about 6 loutish young princes out and about each promised her hand, and now the PCs are tasked with keeping them around and testing their mettle together with the princess to see what the lads are made of.

Here's another.
Two great warriors from seperate cities are in love. Their families want them married, but marriage plans grind to a halt, as each city cannot bear for their great warrior to move into the house of the other warrior. You know, on account of not leaving any one city too undefended.

Try to shore up the defenses of one or both the cities through whatever means you have in order to allow the lovebirds to finally marry and have the strongest babies.

Newfriend here.

I don't know if this is the appropriate board for this... It says traditional games yet the only one I vaguely recognise is Magic The Gathering.

So bear with me.

Baught pic related the other day and like the nerd I am I'm excited about setting up tournaments and taking it to parties etc.

>who wants to party with me? amirite?

Anyway, I'm thinking about what kind of booze to use.

Beer is the most practical and inexpensive. I can even make it dark versus light beer for added class but assuming each glass holds 1 oz, the maximum amount of beer each player drinks in a game is only 16 oz. Not nearly enough to have an effect on the game.

On the other hand i can use liquor. for a few extra bucks i can even make that dark versus light also but a similar problem arises when a player can takes upwards of 16 shots a game. Too many for us non-alcoholics.

Im looking for a middle ground between the two . im looking for the perfect drink that:
>1. is not so strong so as though 1 game is a player's whole night and strong enough so that the game becomes more difficult as it progresses.
>2. is relatively inexpensive
>3. bonus points for drinks that, can be dark or light, taste good, have variety on the board and somehow represent their piece(king=crown royal, etc)
34 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Super easy. Pawns are beer level. Maybe roulette one liquor shot in there. Put wine level alcohol content into the Knights, bishops, or rooks, shots in the others. Put some STRONG shit in the Queen. And the king? I dunno, half everclear or something. Something you can set on fire before drinking.
>>
>>49936063
Mixed drinks. Screwdriver, Whiskey Sour, Rum and Coke, etc. Mix to the level desired.

Or mix the board. Beer for pawns straight liquor for Kings/Queens. Mixed drinks for other pieces.
>>
>>49936155
i haven't considered wine
with wine i can also separate red from white along with the beer, and for the liquor i can do vodka versus whisky

>The Guilds charge no taxes, just skim profit off your labor

To put it simply, everything has gone the way of Uber. Sign your life away to a Guild, and everything will work out under Big Brother's care.

As long as you don't get caught up in a false flag attack and marked as dead, which would get your Guild Account deleted.
