Just a thought experiment. What modern academic disciplines would Final Fantasy mage classes fall under?
>>49925103
Black Mages as chemists, since they can cast fire, ice, and lightning?
They don't. Disciples would be added to accommodate them.
>>49925103
white mages = doctors
>>49925103
Blue Mages are either mythology experts of cryptozoologists.
>>49925103
Black mages are Physicists
White Mages are Nanobiologists
Blue Mages are Cryptozoologists
Time Mages are Quantum Physicists
Summoners are some asshole with a cell phone

I would like the creator of FF to confirm what each FF Mage class means (for sure and confirmed).
>>49929228
Fighters are Fighting-Men
Black Belts are Monks
Red Mages are Bards
Thieves are Thieves
White Mages are Priests
Black Mages are Magic-Users
The original FF riffed D&D pretty hard.
Now what i would like to see them in "modern" but still recognizable clothing
The black mage i thought would have a one or two size too big popped collar trench-coat an umbrella for a staff, now how would you go about the hat and the means to hide the face?

Yeah, the "Totally not Mindflayers" were pretty annoying. Also the Cockatrices, etc. And the Ghoul subtype enemies. God, those guys could be real fuckers. And the Slimes.
I guess I'm saying Marsh Cave always pissed me off.

Lots of good pixel art, especially good old pixel art, is made by replicating concept sketches.
I shit you fucking not, half the art assets are stolen straight from TSR.
>>49925103
Well magic doesn't exist, so, philosopher or something equally useless.

Yes, D&D and 95% of the fantasy genre ripped off Tolkien.
>>49939508
D&D has some pretty deep roots in Swords and Sorcery novels as well as in war gaming.
The former was heavily inspired by Tolkien, but "based upon" would be a stretch.
Let alone "ripped off".
What >>49929689 is getting at is succinctly displayed here: >>49939452

What stories before tolkien depicted elves as 6ft tall powerhouses?
What stories before tolkien depicted dwarves as greedy miners? An esoteric one here or there that only linguistics scholars like tolkien would have read?
What stories before tolkien had halflings?
Sorry dude. The fantasy genre was entirely Tolkien's doing.
>>49939835
>The fantasy genre was entirely Tolkien's doing.
Not disagreeing with this.
>>49939508
>Yes, D&D and 95% of the fantasy genre ripped off Tolkien.
But I *am* disagreeing with the implication that FF ripped off Tolkien.
See, Final Fantasy 1 has absolutely no direct influence from Tolkien.
I'll concede plenty of indirect influence (mostly through D&D). But no direct.
>>49939911
>I'll concede plenty of indirect influence (mostly through D&D). But no direct.
What does it matter if it's indirect? A great deal of the themes came from tolkien.
I'm not saying they should be ashamed, i'm just pointing out that tolkien was the only creative person in the fantasy genre. Everything else derives from his work.
>>49940010
>What does it matter if it's indirect?
Why the absolute fuck did >>49939508 need to come and derail the thread?
It has nothing to do with the conversation so far. You've rustled my jimmies.
>>49940033
Deal with it, nerd.
>>49940010
>Everything is derivative of Tolkien because elves and dwarves and orcs
Except none of the stories featuring these races have ever gone anywhere close to Lord of the Rings
>>49940430
>looking beyond superficial details
I bet this nerd even reads books!
>>49940430
Nothing in the last 80 years has come close to the Lord of the Rings.
Even the War of the Jewels shits on most literary fantasy stories.
>>49939835
Tolkien derived from a lot of gaelic and nordic mythology, which itself was derived from other, earlier mythology.
Literally everything in every modern media is essentially derivative when you look at it in such a granular fashion, but doing so makes you a pissant so most people don't bother.
