>You are a noble ruling of one of the islands in a massive archipelago kingdom.
>The king only holds power through his order of most elite knights, which are so well-trained and equipped they can beat the combined army of all the other island-ruling nobles.
>In the meanwhile, you trained your household guard to the level almost comparable to the king's knights, making you a direct threat.
>In response, the king makes you the governor of the harshiest island in the archipelago, populated by savage rebels and until your appointment held by your fiercest rival.
>The island is also the place of richest diamond mines.

Take the charge?
Yes, it's a difficult row to hoe, but not intrinsically so.
Even then, why would the king send a lesser man to do so arduous a duty?
>>
>>49886203
when a ruler holds on to power only by force of arms, and then only barely, he better not piss his nobles off by hogging all the goodies. better let them have some pacifying profit and weaken themselves fighting the savages at the same time.
>>
>>49886227
This doesn't imply the king is evil or ultimately self serving if he recognizes the weakness of his own position and acts to shore it.
As it is described, the neighboring islands are actively hostile, and would wage war if they could conceivably get away with it. In case of the protag, there is a very real, reasonable fear that he could be scouted out by rival nations.
Offering lordship as a vassal in exchange for betraying the current ruler is something that happened fairly often in Chinese history, for example. Unless the king is a fucking dick in other ways, yeah, it's sorta a dick move, but in the grand scheme, justifiable.

Weekly Wulin Weekend Wuxia Thread
/WeWuWeWu/ General

Wuxia is an ancient Martial Arts genre dating back to the late 4th Century(BC), a fictional medium encompassing the passions and treachery of the Shen Zhou, Ancient China, and is often punctuated by high action kung fu fights, an elderly Chinese man holding a baby in a ladder factory who don't want no trouble, a screen encompassing Kamehameha or "THAT" forbidden technique that we haven't seen ever since the blood line ended.

I know you Legends of the Wulin, Wuxia Xiashia whatever the fuck its called people are out there.
We don't have enough threads

How're you doing Viking Wulin guy?

Are we still homebrewing Wild West Wulin?

I'm essentially taking Wuxia, Crime Films, and Spelljammer with modern D&D 5e races and throwing them in a blender with a Hindu and Buddhist coat of paint for my upcoming campaign.

I'm deliberately not figuring out too much details as the story is meant to be more personal to the characters, than existential.
>>
>>49886063
I'm in the same boat.

I'm running a high seas adventure in Legends of the Wulin and I don't want to commit to too many things because I don't know which way my players will swing.

Unfortunately most of them are forever DnD types who never want to try out anything, at least not for too long.

Though I am keeping some encounter ideas just in case, i.e. Martial Art pirates that learn their Kung Fu from a specific fish and name themselves after various parts; Fins, Blowhole, Teeth, or variations like Hammerhead

Stretching the symbolism a bit, just how many powers/abilities could you give to a magic-user whose themes are "cold/frost/winter"/that whole shtick? Like, obviously, you got ice manipulation and all that but many elements in "fiction" are associated with a whole fucklot of other ones. Like, there's barely a power you COULDN'T attribute to "water" (shapeshifting, prophecy, healing, illusions, actual water...).

So what'll it be for ice?

>>

Time and stillness. Those with the theme of ice are all about order and stagnation so they use their ice power to impose their will upon things.

How do you keep the castle in shape? Cover it in ice? How do you keep the one you loved from rotting? Encase them in ice. How do you stop those pesky chaotic sorts and their fire of chaos? Ice.
>>
Slowing/stasis (movement, processes), preservation, fixing in shape (as opposed to shapeshifting), mirror images, emotional distancing, ruthless logic...
>>
Well, if you're willing to stretch it hard ENOUGH, there's nothing you can't pull off.

Ice>Stillness>Time>Causality>Future

Bang, your ice mage can see the future!

Reading "small gods" by terry pratchett and watching episode two (the dew god's small shrine) of natsume yuujinchou has given me an animism boner, so I am
going to ramble on and request pictures of diminutive gods.

Both Natsume and Small Gods give subtly different explanations for how gods rise to power. In "small gods" there are thousands of microscopic gods in any given place and they rise whenever someone gives general belief to any spirit in the area (I imagine they need to fight over that scrap of belief so that one rises above the others) and then it snowballs. In natsume yuujinchou, a spirit takes up residence in an empty shrine, and then a coincidence happens where a person prays at the shrine and then their prayer comes true for unrelated reasons, giving major belief to the spirit (now god) and giving them power. while they both essentially start out as tutelaries, they become specialized as they gain power, becoming rain gods, war gods, etc.

conversely, they both give examples of gods who fall from power. Small Gods has deities slowly forgetting who they are (as exemplified by Om living as a tortoise for three years). Natsume has the much more interesting implication (I don't believe this is directly stated, though) that, due to the god not having enough power, the god's domain turns to less important or demanding things (going from being a rain god to a dew god, for instance). in addition, both show the god as becoming physically smaller (as physical as you can be with a god), to the point of being tortoise or tom thumb sized.

If people have actually read this far, I have become enamored with both the concept of both tutelary deities (on one end of the divine lifecycle) and the concept of gods who have taken a smaller version of their previous domain (on the other end). I especially enjoy the extremes of these, such as a god of a small clearing, or a sun god who can now only light a lantern. if I can make specific requests, I would prefer those sorts of pictures.

P.S. I realize that one could call gods so small spirits, but I think the word god is way better than spirit. also, god evokes something to be worshiped, while spirit is just something generic.

Can you give me some examples of "edgelords" and acceptable dark-themed characters?

Dark characters aren't bad if their is used for the purpose of the story, rather than for shock value. This is true for both players and GMs.

Ultimately, what people dislike in edgelord characters is that they do not mesh with the party, either quietly brooding alone when others get along, or doing shit that makes the rest of the party go "why are we even travelling with this guy?".

So I get that paladins are supposed to be Lawful Good most of the time, and are generally seen as honorable characters, but would it still be Lawful Good for a paladin to use more unscrupulous methods?

I'm not talking about things like torture or killing innocents, but rather things such as poisoning (whether coating the sword or poisoning the cup), sneaking and killing people in their sleep, and just deception in general.

Stuff that's not acting in a different way towards people, but killing in a more efficient albeit less "honorable" way.

Depends on the god they worship.
>>
>LG = honourable
you could play it tthat way, and should if it's a god who encourages such behavior, like >>49885020

But LG only means they seak to uphold the laws of whatever society they live in, while seeking to assist other people, whom they may or may not know.
>>
I mean those are abhorrent to the codes of knightly valor that paladins are inspired by. Even secular knights and warriors should be hesitant to use those methods unless its against demons or aberrations or some shit.

Honor's important. As a GM I wouldn't make you instafall but if you made a habit of it expect some chiding visions from your god or your reputation to get shot to hell-people stop taking you at your word and your name stops meaning anything at court because you stab people in their fucking sleep like a goblin.

Have you ever played a character who had no investment in what was going on and no reason to be involved?
19 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>49883582

No because I'm not a shit roleplayer.

There are few things worse than a PC who all but says "there's no reason I should be here".

It's the preferred MO of That Guys who like to think their OC is a cut above the rest of the party and is only their for everyone else's benefit.
>>
>>49883582
Not exactly.
Played a sorc once whose motivation was "I have no friends and you guys look like you're going places."
I had no real investment in the plot until the party became my family.
>>
once, but that was a weird scenario where each player was controlling two characters (don't ask, we were about 14)
one guy was the brains and the other guy was the easily-distracted, well-meaning, lunatic brawns who was just self-aware enough to realise his buddy usually knew better, but didn't care about much else
and yes that was about 95% player convenience and only about 5% characterization
