Does anyone have solutions for making a world feel reactive without making it feel like the PCs are the only "actors" in the world.

I've put a lot of effort into making the world of my game feel like it's lived in. I have a timeline of plots and agendas from different major players and factions that I keep track of, and I try to figure out which ones succeed or failed at the end of every few sessions based on what the PCs did and what they didn't do. I read that once as advice on /tg/, and it seemed genius at the time - if plots are always progressing, then eventually the big ones catch up with the PCs no matter what they do without it ever actually feeling like a railroad.

But one of my players pointed out a weird quirk in this style of doing things - why are the PCs seemingly the only ones acting to stop these different groups from accomplishing these ends? Why is it assumed that if the PCs have a choice to investigate an outbreak or kill ork raiders and they kill the orks, the outbreak will get worse? Why does no other adventuring group get put onboard to stop the outbreak? Do other people get hired and just always fail, making the PCs the only competent adventurers in the land?

In my player's word "for a game where we all agreed being the 'chosen one' is dull, it sure feels like we're literally the only ones who can do any good."

How do I account for this without also making the PCs overshadowed by other, potentially more competent groups of heroes?

>How do I account for this without also making the PCs overshadowed by other, potentially more competent groups of heroes?

By keeping the focus on the PCs and their actions?

Do you not put news channels in modern games because the players might feel "overshadowed" by the war going on in Nofuckistan?
>>
>>50629388
Instead of showing a living, breathing world by causing things to go to shit if the PCs don't intervene, show the living, breathing world by making things progress while the PCs are gone, so things are different when they return.

Instead of "you can do X or Y and the one you neglect will get fucked," do "while accomplishing X, you encountered these NPCs, some good and some bad, and when the PCs return a year later, those NPCs have moved on in their lives and adapted to what the PCs accomplished back then."
>>
>>50629388
>based on what the PCs did and what they didn't do
This here is where you are wrong. You base what's changening in different storylines solely (or almost exclusievly) on actions of your players. It's no wonder that it feels like they are only ones acting out.

I think that you planned out all this groups and people storylines and they only change when players interact with them. It's not only causing you problems its also highly unrealistic. In normal environment all this groups would interact with each others and change each others actions. You should not have separate lanes of story arcs that change only on actions of your players, you should have spider webs of interactions, rivalies, wars etc, that change almost constantly and in which players are only one of the factors.

You might have also problem with world building, as in the world you've built would not actually "survive" in a form you are presenting your players. Let me give you example:
>you have town, 1000 years old
>it is located near plains where orcs roam
>big group of orcs are starting to gather on plains that could endanger said town
>players are the only thing that could stop orcs
>somehow players are the only thing that saved the town from a threat that is common in its region
You see the problem here? Town would never get to be that old if it has no reliable way of dealing with orc menace. It should have logical ways of surviving.

Modifications of UA feats because they're almost all terrible, terrible representations of how history and archeology surmise ancient, medieval, and renaissance weaponry was actually used. Also because they don't solve the problem of their being a mechanically optimal choice in arms for certain builds, which, frankly, is a bit boring.

Also, having a feat or fighting style that adds finesse to other weapons. It's not only more historically accurate, it's more interesting than having everyone run around with rapiers and daggers.

Classic books. Go to a used bookstore, or a library sale, and get him like ten or so classics that he's not likely to be forced to read in class. He's liable to find some good plot hooks and shit that he can use, get a better feel for pacing and all of that. Alternately, history books. You could make a hell of a homebrew setting based on the Reconquista, or the collapse of the Later Han. Basically, stuff that'll give him ideas that he wouldn't usually run into on his own.

What would be the IRL backlash against a private corporation choosing to tow an asteroid into orbit to mine it for resources?

Trying to put together a plot point for a campaign.
85 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>50605401
It depends on what the asteroid is made out of but whatever it contains will go down in value.

If the asteroid contained large amounts of valuable metal such as gold or silver the prices for those would plummet and it would negatively effect the global economy.
>>
>>50605401
Asteroid Orbit mining would receive lots of IRL backlash. You have communication companies and militaries who consider it a disruption to their satellite networks, other companies opposing the mining on various grounds to cover that they are upset that they did not get to do it first, and space-Greenpeace protesting for Asteroid and Earth Rights.
>>
>>50605401
The big issue with the concept of asteroid resource mining is that such an endeavor would have a massive initial investment with a return that could wind up upsetting its own market just through the sheer number of kilos needed to make it a profitable endeavor, and on top of that gold is incredibly dense making the rocket equation a bitch to profit off of.

The best you could do, price wise, for a full asteroid mining mission would most likely be at least 1 billion USD (this is assuming there are no humans involved in the actual spaceflight and you're fine with waiting a while for the project to finish).

The current price of gold is roughly 37,802.85 USD per kg [http://goldprice.org/gold-price-per-kilo.html] making a 1 billion USD mission forced to mine at least 26,453 kg of gold just to break even. Now, the good news is you're unlikely to upset the market in the long run as your mission would only take up 0.050871215% of the estimated amount of gold that's still mineable with in the Earth [http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-21969100].

However, since your break even point only requires you to mine 0.05% of the worlds gold supply, if you had a billion dollars to spend it might just be easier to just mine it on the ground.

I can give you a quick primer as a competitive AOS player

Order

Seraphon: A little bit above average at everything, but not amazing at anything. Reroll everything (including your opponents dice). Tons of options. Big dinosaurs and some of the best artillery but it is short range. Objectively the strongest army in the competitive meta with Kroak + Vortex filth.

Sylvaneth - Great defensive army, but low movement. Can spawn forest all over the map and then teleport to that forest. High variety in list building.

Stormcast - Low model count, above average saves and damage. Low movement but lots of teleport gimmicks. Very powerful when mixed with Order wizards.

High Elves - Wizards and phoenixes make a very powerful turtle list. Hunker down with bolt throwers and whittle your opponent down. They can't kill your 0+ save phoenixes with 4+ to ignore wounds, eventually you just win.

Dark Elves - Frail and average damage, but very fast. Not viable in competitive because other armies do the same thing but better. Wait for Malerion to make them great again.

Wood Elves - High Elves do it better.

Dwarves - Good saves and good melee, but far too slow. Need to mix in artillery from Ironweld Arsenal, but vulnerable to being outflanked by fast armies or teleporting units.

Freeguild - Like Dwarves with worse melee, but better shooting. Gunline lists are nothing but a bad meme, very easy to counter. Fun to play, but poor saves and low bravery make them fragile and prone to running away.

Fyreslayers - Low movement, but good saves and decent melee. Not viable on their own, need to mix in some artillery from Ironweld Arsenal. Vulnerable to being flanked by fast armies.

>>
>>50628393
Zendikar would be the obvious plane to set a campaign in, Innistrad and it both have supplements to help you do exactly do that, but the correct answer is probably not to limit yourself to any single plane. You really can't show charm of the setting without some planeswalking.

It'd be best to start in any plane you see fit and then have the players ignite as planeswalkers mid-campaign. Do it too early and it won't feel special enough.

Depends. Does a griffon have mammary glands of some kind?

Depends on whether or not they can breed sexually viable offspring. I assume this would have the "without the use of magic" caveat added on for things like half-dragons or tieflings.

I'm sure that magical rules involving this can be incorporated based on the in-setting reason why this is possible. For example, half-dragon/half-human characters tend to exist because their draconic parent was in human form at the time of conception, which could affect the resulting child.

There's only one way to discover that answer.
>>
>>50627142
Griffons are actually descended from a branch of ornithiscian dinosaurs that diverged from a common ancestor with true avians around 150 million years ago. Griffons are differentiated into two main groups: The Reliquodonts (toothed griffons), of which the hippogriff is the most well-known example but which also contains many forms of terrestrial "quadruped birds", and the Edentulagriffs (toothless griffons) which encompasses the "true griffons" and also, interestingly enough, the cockatrice.
