Gift ideas for a young DM? Basically tell me shit you wish you had for DMing when you were younger
Classic books. Go to a used bookstore, or a library sale, and get him like ten or so classics that he's not likely to be forced to read in class. He's liable to find some good plot hooks and shit that he can use, get a better feel for pacing and all of that. Alternately, history books. You could make a hell of a homebrew setting based on the Reconquista, or the collapse of the Later Han. Basically, stuff that'll give him ideas that he wouldn't usually run into on his own.
Booze.
But seriously. If theres any books for your system he doesn't have. Tactical maps, initiative trackers, miniatures.
Stuff to help with organization might be good too.

Monster miniatures, fairly generic but prettier than little pieces of paper marked "guard#2".

GM for him
Id say something like fancy dice, a cool dice tower and maybe a GM screen like pict related
If he's your gm you'll be benefiting from it too so don't think of it as a one way gift.

If he doesn't already have one, get a Chessex battlemat and some nonpermanent markers for it.

Since players that aren't dickheads aren't purchasable at shops, dice, minis and books.

Personally, I have no problem with finding downloads for books, and I DM with my laptop so I don't need dice.
Minis for common monsters would be great, as would a proper battle mat (my one is a couple of taped together pieces of grid paper in a thin plastic wallet).
