Magic is producing a series of notes in any way you like to obtain the desired efect.
Magic can only affect living creatures (you can't produce lighting out it tin air, but if you have an electrical eel in you pocket you with a spell you can amke him produce more electricity then a diesel motor and direct it at your enemy)

>The legionary nearest to him was still alive. A World Eater, bisected at the waist, was dragging himself closer to where Ra kneeled. His armour was more red than white, signifying some unknown change within his treasonous Legion. ‘Blood,’ the warrior murmured through a shattered mouth. ‘I was there,’ Ra tried to growl at him, but the exhausted words were a snarling whisper. ‘I was there the day we saved your mongrel primarch from certain death.’ ‘Blood,’ the World Eater mumbled again. His helm had been crushed, savaging the skull and face within. His eyes were glazed, maddened, the pupils mere pinpricks. ‘If only we’d left him there.’ The Custodian laughed, feeling his reknitting bones and abused muscles stinging afresh with the squirted application of adrenal elixirs from inside his armour. ‘Blood…’ ‘If only we’d left him to die in those mountains.’ Ra was smiling now. ‘The one primarch who couldn’t conquer his world. The one primarch who lived as a slave. The one primarch who had to be saved from death.’ ‘Blood!’ The World Eater’s eyes resolved with the ghost of clarity. ‘Blood for the–’ A spear rammed through the World Eater’s spine, driven down between his shoulder blades. The power pack on his back shorted out and died. The warrior himself went into convulsions. Eyes that had so briefly cleared now rolled back into his broken head.

Could magic work as an adaptation in an ecosystem or would it just fuck everything up? Would magical beasts be able to live side by side with non-magical ones or would an evolutionary arms race develop with until all mundane beasts have been out-competed or devoured?
>>50617796
Depends how magic works, but I'd say they fit just fine. Something that can turn invisible is still going to be foiled by keen hearing and sense of smell. Presumably using magic would also have higher caloric intakes or development time, meaning a magical animal might be limited to smaller populations.
>>50617796
I think it would make more sense for inately magical creatures to predate on humans and other races that regularly make use of magic but then that doesn't stop the magic arms race as it were. For instance, having some kind of large herbivores that can fly by walking on air as a means of defense suddenly causes carnivors to start flying to find some way to pull them out of the air
>>50617796
First, you'd have to define what magic can do and what its limitations are, before you can tell how strongly it'd be selected for evolutionarily.
I need art. Old art. Prehistoric art.
I'm talking birth of fire, pre stone age tech, dozens of other hominids walking the earth.

Alright /tg/, I need suggestions with how to deal with a DM on another players behalf. Large green text story below:
>Join D&D 5th edition group and have semi long 2 year plus campaign.
>Player A plays a Ranger and is generally an all around bro. Goes out of his way to help in combat and is the de-facto party healer.
>DM throws a burning net bridge ambush at us and the main damage dealer of the party (Player B) loses his sword to the rapids below.
>Player A goes out of his way taking multiple attacks of opportunity/damage and gives his +1 sword to Player B. Player A drops below 0 hp and fails all his death saves.
>Player A says GG and that he will have a new character drawn up next week. Brings a Bard.
>DM flat out says he can't play a caster and makes Player A erase the bard and draw up a fighter. (Player A had to use worse stat roles since he had to re-roll those as well. Highest number is a 12)
>DM throws Player A's background ideas out the window and makes the character a female human prostitute who had been captured by trolls.
>Player A is obviously disgruntled but plays on.
>Last session ends on really awkward tension note.
I found out later that the DM had a grudge against player A for playing a Druid in his 3.5 game about 10 years ago. Player A used the meta-magic natural spell feat to cause havoc in on of his early boss battles and the DM never forgave Player A over it.
What grinds my gears is that the DM has let multiple people come in and play casters over the last 2 years. The players at the table had no warning certain things/classes were off the table. It seems really shitty to outright ban classes to specific people.
Ideas for dealing with this DM?
have a conversation about your feelings with him and the other players. not sure why you asked us
>>50615844
My advice is to find another game.
If I had a character drawn up and was flat out told to re-roll as a fighter, I'd seriously consider walking right then and there.
>DM throws Player A's background ideas out the window and makes the character a female human prostitute
This is one giant red flag.
Sounds like the guy has all the signs of being not only a terrible DM but a really shitty person as well.
Everyone and their mother has talked about twisting the models of elves and dwarves, ranging from minor nuances to making them mushroom creatures and aliens respectively. But how does one alter humans? How much could you alter humanity in a setting while still keeping them true to their core, and what would you say exactly defines them? Could you give them purple skin or pointed ears, but not purple skin and pointed ears? Do heavily modified specimens that are no longer humanoid physically still count if their mind is intact? Would it be unthinkable for them to fill the low-level cannon fodder monster niche even though in most games basic humans are no more stronger than kobolds (1d4 of a kobold vs 1d3 commoner)? What can and can't you do with the human model?
I don't see why you couldn't change humans in appearance, or change their role or whatever, but that's how we arrived at fantasy races in the first place.
If you make humans big and mean, they're orcs.
If you make humans long-lived and magical, they're elves.
if you make humans short and norse, they're dwarves.
This is much more common in sci-fi where you have "transhumanity" or post-humans.
The obvious answer in a fantasy setting is a culture of formerly human sentient undead.

So...Londor?
I'm about to play a Cthulhu 1920 game this sunday. I've been playing pen & paper a lot in the past 10 years, but it's my first time actually playing Cthulhu. I've also read my fair share of Lovecraft.
Since I won't have time to read the rules, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for a premade character.
Is there anything I should know beforehand?
Any particular tips you'd give me?
Do's and don'ts of the genre?
I'm playing with strangers, if that changes anything.
watch the 2005 Call of Cthulhu film it's actually pretty nice for that
>>50613609
Read the fucking rules.
Also, I want to see those tentacles have their way with that woman.
>>50614075
Will do, thanks!
>>50614318
DM will probably be lenient about that since i'm not the only newcomer, but you're right and I will. I think I remember reading somewhere that they were quite light, too.
Seems like /tg/ doesn't really care for Cthulhu. Huh.
How would you feel about a Paladin being roleplayed like a hokey, 90s era, anti-drug mascot? Rather than trying to convert the party to their god, they're trying to make sure everyone eats their vegetables and gets to bed by 8.
All done in the most cartoonish voice possible, of course.
Sounds like it would make for a memorable one shot but an obnoxious long-term campaign.
As a general rule of thumb, any character whose concept starts with a funny gimmick will get old a few sessions in and everyone will hate you
>>50613455
McGruff the Crime dog for the win.
>>50613455
You could make it work without making it too annoying. You could make a paladin who's kind of like Nalia from BG2, completely out of touch with the people he's trying to help in a way that comes off as condescending.
After all, paladins are encouraged to ignore moral complexity and have the most basic understanding of right and wrong without worrying about the consequences or implications. Paladins who think too much are paladins who fall.
