This was when I was still in high school. I've tried my best to re-create my route on this map. It was in Missouri, in hilly - not mountainous - and heavily forested country.

I had done this hike many times and I *knew* that at one point there was a fork that went down to a creek. I thought I would be clever and bushwack down to the creek and then meet up with the trail wherever it crossed, heading back up to the main branch after my detour.

Trouble is, I didn't really have any practice bushwacking, and while I had a map, for some reason I'd forgotten my compass, which is a very frustrating combination when the sky is overcast and you think you know where you are on the map, but not with 100% certainty. This detour took me probably an hour in all, but it felt like much longer.

When I left the trail, I went down a hill to my right, following an obvious depression in the terrain. I reached a creek bed, dry at the part I got to, and followed it downstream, where there was some water in pools. For some reason, I decided to go back the way I came, but couldn't remember quite which of the little mini ravines I'd come down from the ridge. I ended up going up the wrong one and got very frustrated when I realized it wasn't only not taking me up to the ridge, but it looked totally different, in terms of terrain. I'd come down a leafy slope, but the slope I'd chosen to go up had thick bushes and was open to the sky in spots.

By then, I was panicking and making rash decisions out of some impulse to just try everything until something worked. There were times when I crossed the same spot, after having thought that I'd been making progress. There were times when I thought about just walking in a straight line until I hit a road, then hitch-hiking back to my car. The rest of my struggle is somewhat of a haze, but I went up and down hills many times. When I finally got back to the trail, I bent down and kissed the dirt. Learned a valuable lesson that day.

Other than the bodyslam, what is the easiest way to kill a wolf?

Florida btw if that matters.

alright /out/, I want to start going on some hiking trips with friends and eventually solo. next on the buy list is a tent, for which the Vango Banshee 200 is under consideration. from my understanding, it's a reasonably good tent for my budget, and should serve me well in a mild climate (south Australia), I'm open to buying another higher quality tent in future, but would this be a good buy?
32 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>941993
Yeah. Its not super light, but its a decent tent for the size and price. I was looking at getting it a year or so ago, but went with the Kathmandu Lansen on sale. The Vango looks alright and will stand up to anything you'll get in southern Aus really. It might be a bit tight with two people in it tho unless you're pretty friendly with them.
>>
>>941993
Hey mate, I am from South Australia too and had a banshee 200 as my first tent. Great beginner backpacking tent, like the other anon said pretty heavy when compared to a tarp or other minimalist shelters but secure. I found the banshee to be waterproof enough for our weather, where do you plan on taking it /out/?

Anybody on /out/ ever move away from home to pursue your love for all things /out/?

I'm 21 years of age, living in Lincoln Nebraska. I have a good job and good friends. I love my family and I would hate to leave them, but it's long been my dream to move to Wyoming. Nebraska is probably one of the worst /out/ states in the US, I need to get lost in the mountains, I need to be able to drive a few miles and be in the middle of nowhere.

Have you ever left home to find something that you love? How did it pan out?

"The best place, to me, was the largest remnant of this plateau that dates from the tertiary age. It's kind of rolling country, not flat, and when you get to the edge of it you find these ravines that cut very steeply in to cliff-like drop-offs and there was even a waterfall there. It was about a two days hike from my cabin. That was the best spot until the summer of 1983. That summer there were too many people around my cabin so I decided I needed some peace. I went back to the plateau and when I got there I found they had put a road right through the middle of it" His voice trails off; he pauses, then continues, "You just can't imagine how upset I was. It was from that point on I decided that, rather than trying to acquire further wilderness skills, I would work on getting back at the system. Revenge.

Do you fear bringing females with you when leaving the city?

First I don't live in USA and my country is probably more dangerous than most parts of USA. Some friends once invited me to go with them but we would have 2 females in the group. I just refuse to put myself in such dangerous situation because, even though I know theres only a little chance of something bad happening, I don't want to spend the rest of my life knowing I couldn't help. In these times of women empowerment (not saying it is wrong, I actually think this is very good) they believe that the niggers will respect them too but that just wont happen.
Also I friend of mine travelled to india with two female friends. Just imagine getting in a situation where you are against a group of armed attackers and two girls. You wouldn't be able to do anything to help them.

Is this some kind of generational thing?

You're afraid? If so, why?
>>

Here an example in english.

http://thecrimephilosopher.blogspot.com.br/2006_10_01_archive.html

A girl from college travelled alone to india once and luckly nothing happened. Anyway if I knew her I would try to convince her mother to prohibit her from going.
What generally happens is mugging but we never know.
>>
>>939085
I didn't read that.

>sister says she wants to go to Kenya for the summer
>muh see tha world bullshit
>tell her, "well, say goodbye to your nieces and nephews cuz you'll likely never come home from that"
>her common sense kicks in
>she doesn't go

Anyway, I guess I don't understand why you couldn't go travel to somewhere un-shitty with a woman. WTF you going to do in India anyway? Go camping or hiking. Go fishing.

Yes, you can do this for winter gardening for the veggies you want to grow.

-Use normal electric space heaters.
-Don't use gas heaters unless they are forced air and have a heat exchanger so that gas fumes don't enter the greenhouse.
-Use large-bubble bubble wrap on all the windows in the winter. You may double this up, two layers thick if you want (though Zone 8 should only need 1 layer). This will take care of heat leaving too quickly. Press the bubble side to the window. Mark each panel of bubble wrap with marker so that when you take them down you can put them back up in their assigned place for easy work next winter season.
-Place as many containers of water in your greenhouse as possible. Paint the outside of the containers black (sandpaper them then paint). Fill every space you are not using with water containers (2-liter soda bottles are great, plastic 55-gal drums can be used as tables with plywood on top). These will absorb heat during the day and release it at night helping to keep temperature drops from happening.
-Install fans for moving the air around both for better heat use and for making a breeze on your plants to help keep them sturdy.
-Remember to clean the windows, inside and out, before putting up the bubble wrap. Any light dust/dirt/algae on them will reduce the amount of sun that enters the greenhouse.

There's no need to put black bags on the windows. I'm not sure why you'd do that. The cost in electric will be greatly lowered with the steps used above. Initially, more money will be spent heating up all that water, but will then lower once it has reached the room's temperature. Then they will act like a buffer for heat storage, reducing costs.

Is orienteering something I can teach myself? There aren't any classes that are reasonably close. Spend a lot of time /out/ and figured I should know more than I do. Most time I am /out/ I have a pretty good sense of where I'm at, or I take for granted that I'm on a well maintained and obvious trail. Should I know more?

Hey fellas, i'm new here so forgive me if it gets asked all the time.

I'm wanting to take up outdoor photography as a hobby, possibly even sell some at some point. I'm in England within travelling distances of some fairly nice places i go to a few times a year anyway.

Do any of you guys here do it? What cameras etc would you recommend for a beginner? Any fellow Brits know of any nice secluded places that need photoing?

Basically just discussing photography thread

But the advice will be to get an entry level Nikon (like the D3400) or Canon (I think the 750D..?) which should serve your purpose until you get bored or decide you actually like photography and want to invest more than a few hundred bucks into it.

Pretty much every entry level camera is the same
