There is a stupid thread and you should feel bad for starting it
Does anyone on /out/ believe in nature spirits?
Any experiences with them?
Should I post this on /x/ instead?

>Should I post this on /x/ instead?
Yes
>>941613
Mostly unrelated post here since this thread is a little unrelated, but ever read The Fionovar Tapestry? It's pretty decent high fantasy - has an angry forest and all that. Thought it kind of related. Enjoy your day on /x/
i'm an animist. does that count?

Possible? Sure. Pain in the ass? Yes. Worth it? Only you can say.
>>940777
I lived in a tent for three years while saving when I first started my 103k a year job. I was able to invest in my dream home and live close to work. I think it was totally worth it.
So, has the survivalist/bushcraft thing gone out of style yet? What about old-timey gear like wool blanket and leather backpacks?
Just checking in
bushcraft is the not a counter cultrure you shortsighted millenial, it is the foundation, bright colloured plastic clothes is the fad

lol, slavery an' dying of preventable illnesses are the FOUNDATION.

i mean, i get it - you're going to be out there alone whittling potstands for 3 hours after i've already set up my camp and ran down to the lake for a nice dip

Talk about fishin
Trying to decide between a daiwa coastal tws and a Shimano citica for salt, any reason I should go the Shimano? I'm a bit biased towards daiwa, my daiwa zillion coastal is still working perfectly after 6 or so years. Mostly upgrading for left hand retrieve as I can control the rod better with my right.
>>939837
I take it too far with my pond fishin but a lot of the time I just leave my tackle in the car and take a couple rods and some pliers with me.
I still need to grab pic related. Almost bought it when I was at Gander Mtn yesterday. It's the perfect small bag.
Is this fake or does the night sky actually look like this away from the light-polluted cities?
>>939599
That looks like some long exposure so it won't be quite as bright. But you can actually see the Milky Way if you get away from the city. I never believed it until I broke down at 3am in the middle of absolute nowhere.
It's not fake but the photographer used photoshop to enhance the colors a bit, this is probably a 30 secs exposure or so. But yeah, drive 1h away from major light sources and it will look like that on a moonless night, totaly worth it !
>>939599
Every night (4 me), except when it's cloudy.
I am not suprised when city slickers are amazed and overwhelmed the first time.
Be advised that is a long exposure pic.

Im a retard and I cant figure out if these two things are compatible
Im wanting to use a goal zero nomad 7 solar panel to operate an electric hot plate in the woods
I know I'll need to convert usb connection to wall outlet style
I need to know if the solar panel can produce enough energy with say, the guide 10 charger. Theres a few charger and generator things on goal zeros website. I need to know what model I could power an electric hot plate with, the guide 10 and the nomad 7 is the smallest kit they have
Hot plate uses about 800 watts
Pic related, guide 10 charger and nomad 7 panel
>>939536
>electric hot plate
>>939539
But seriously
Hot plate is 800 watts
Battery capacity is 11Wh, 2300mAh (4.8V)
I have no idea what to do with this information
What will a 800 watt hot plate require, energy wise?
>>939543
I'm no engineer, but I don't think you're going to get an 800w hot plate to work unless you get like 50 of those portable solar panels.
Launched a model rocket with my three year old daughter today. First launch since I was a kid. We had so much fun. Does this count as an outdoor activity? We live in a cold part of the U.S. so this seems like a good way to get outside for an hour or so for her age. Any tips for having fun with this hobby? Or am I on the wrong board.
>>939310
>Does this count as an outdoor activity?
unless you shoot it into the woods and have to go several miles to find it, no
>>939315
I think he means that typically we do not have model rocket threads here. I think they're cool but I think you'd find more people with similar interests on /toy/ or /sci/.
My AP Bio teacher some how convinced the city of New York to let him teach a private college class and for them to pay for model rockets which we shot at a supermarket,I mean the goal was to measure height by using a bunch of mathy crap but I was an English and history nerd not a math nerd so I just shot it at the super market. only experience I have OP. hope it helped... somehow.
Do we have any preppers here in /out/. New to prepping and need some ideas on gear

Will you be leaving your residence in a shtf scenario or bunkering down?
Do you live in a city/rural/inna woods/apartment.?
What country do you live in?
What biome?
Where is a nearby source of water?
How well do you know your surrounding area?
Can you hunt?
Are you trained with a firearm?
Can you start a fire?
Can you quickly and accurately read a topographic map?
Can you find your location with only a map and compass?
Do you know anything about farming?
How well do you know you local fauna and flora?
Can you set up a simple shelter? How about a long term shelter?
Can you fish?
Can you dry/smoke/cook your own food?
This is just basic /out/ things to think about. Not even prepper level. But if you cant answer these questions properly, maybe stop thinking of "prepping" and just learn to be an /out/doorsmen.
Hi /out/
im going to be going to the wayne national forest this summer, and it will be my first time backpacking by myself. I plan on going a mile or two deep into the woods, nothing too extreme, for my first time
what are some general concepts that i should keep in mind? i have no skills in relation to surviving comfortably out for a couple days. going to go for 3 days at the least, to make my trip worth while.
any youtubers i should watch? any guides?
thanks
Welcome brother.
First of all I cannot in good conscience recommend doing 3 days for your first trip if you have literal ZERO skills. would recommend a simple overnight trip first.
Thankfully you said you are going this summer, so we have lots of time to prepare.
However if you are going to lets try and get you ready.
First of all lets talk initial Planning.
For the love of god please have a detailed plan of your trip. Print off a map of the area, mark where you ideally want to go. Give a copy to someone with the dates of your trip and when you will be returning so if worst comes to worst someone can find you,
get a WATERPROOF map and a compass and learn to use them to minimize your chances of getting lost.
now I will ask you what if any gear you have now?
anything you think you will take with you.
Backpack, Knife, shelter, sleeping bag, water bottle. Just give us a big fucking list.
then we can figure out where to go next.
as for some Youtubers I watch a few.
https://www.youtube.com/user/MCQBushcraft
MCQBushcraft is a favourite, very informative but might sound a little monotone and rambly at times. however literally every one of his videos will be extremely useful for you to watch and learn the skills.
https://www.youtube.com/user/Taromovies
https://www.youtube.com/user/AlfieAesthetics
https://www.youtube.com/user/josephallen19
all 3 of these guys also make enjoyable and informative videos. If you like the /out/doors you will enjoy watching em.
Pic related is an okay starter guide to gear, mainly the left column checklist is a good starting point.
but if you reply with your current gear and thoughts, so I know you are here. I will help out some more and type a fucking essay for you so you dont die.
>>938574
>i have no skills in relation to surviving comfortably out for a couple days
have you done a single overnight alone? have you done multiple nights with friends?
keep in mind
Water > everything
a mile or two miles in many nature reserves is a LOT longer than you think- although according to the google Wayne looks relatively flat.
there is no such thing as cheating when solo camping so just bring dryer lint or make a little fireballs with cotton/Vaseline/lighter fluid.
>>938718
i have some good knives, some fire starters, a pocket camp stove that will do the job.
i have a single person tent, and im taking a firearm.
thats about everything, im concerned with water, and rations. i was thinking of taking MRE's and making some dry rations of my own, i have some guides on that. so i think food wise i should be fine, im just concerned with water and the skills and knowledge i might need.

why is he not picking cotton?
After 5 days of rain here on the east coast, here's some bright rainbows to put a smile on your face!
Rain was appreciated in the SE US. We had some bad drought.
>>938372
Rain is much appreciated even here in the Northeast
We were/are still in a significant drought. And any water added to the system is a benefit in my eyes, even though it's not the best for spending time out
>>938372
Op, why aren't those rainbows behind her ears?
Next op pic, I expect more from you.
