alright /out/, I want to start going on some hiking trips with friends and eventually solo. next on the buy list is a tent, for which the Vango Banshee 200 is under consideration. from my understanding, it's a reasonably good tent for my budget, and should serve me well in a mild climate (south Australia), I'm open to buying another higher quality tent in future, but would this be a good buy?
>>
>>941993
Yeah. Its not super light, but its a decent tent for the size and price. I was looking at getting it a year or so ago, but went with the Kathmandu Lansen on sale. The Vango looks alright and will stand up to anything you'll get in southern Aus really. It might be a bit tight with two people in it tho unless you're pretty friendly with them.
>>
>>941993
Hey mate, I am from South Australia too and had a banshee 200 as my first tent. Great beginner backpacking tent, like the other anon said pretty heavy when compared to a tarp or other minimalist shelters but secure. I found the banshee to be waterproof enough for our weather, where do you plan on taking it /out/?
>>
>>941998
flinders ranges would be first on my list, after that i havent looked far at all

why
>>
>>942006
Good beginner multi day hike is on the Heysen trail, Cape Jervis to Victor Harbour, plenty of water tanks and huts, and real nice environment
>>
>>942032
Cheers mate, i'll definitely look into them
>>
>>942017
What would suggest for an aussie hiking tent then? Kath doesn't seem too bad.

looks decent, but I don't see anywhere to store my gear. I can imagine that would be best for shorter treks with a smaller load
>>
>>942546
yeah there's nowhere at all to store gear and if you're a big guy it feels a bit like a coffin, they do a few nice 2 person tents too but they weigh around 3kg iirc, on quality I have no complaints on either
>>
way too heavy. Weighs as much as my pack, tent, and sleeping bag combined.

the mantis ul 2 is 1.8kg and looks to be a tad fatter than the vango banshee 200, they're comparable in price
>>
Got a blade 200, not bad tent, bit heavy though at 2.1kg, banshee will be heavier as it has two poles -blade only has one- I want something lighter
>>
>>941993

Looks like a poor man's Akto.

Anyone got any experience with these Chinese brands like Naturehike and 3F ? Their tents look like copies of known brands like MSR. Probably made in the same factory with the same basic materials. Only much much cheaper.

These Chinese tents are made of silicone fabrics, weigh in from 1.2 kg to 1.9 kg, and you can get them for 100 euros.

I own the 3F UL 650g 1p tent, use it as my main tent.
The stitching is good and is seam sealed.

I also own the Blade 200. Great tent, can easily fit 2 people with space in between.
>>
>>942775
reading reviews about the mantis, people often complain about tent walls touching their head/feet.
probably going to stick with the banshee considering i haven't heard any bad aside from the weight. cheers for the help all
>>
>>943311
One thing I've experienced with the Banshee is that, in very high winds, it holds well when placed head/ass first against the wind, but will suffer broken tent poles when it's placed sideways.

But we're talking a full day of 70-100kph winds here.

Wild country coshee 2 a best.

You mean a "sleeping" tent right? I don't think hiking while in a tent will work out very well. Maybe you need a poncho?

Macpac.

Or an american/european brand from Scouts Outdoor Centre/Paddy Pallin.

Kath used to be great but their newer stuff is less rugged and more for people who want to look outdoorsy.

I am seriously considering this tent. stilsbudget, 1,6 kg, and roomy. Maybe an option?

Bump for interest

Looking for a tent to take with me on a bike tour across the US. I'll just be setting up in inconspicuous places and hoping no one bugs me, so something rather small and colored in earth tones would be great. I do want to be able to sit up in it so that I have the option of reading in the tent which would be great for waiting out storms but I don't need it to be huge.

Here are my priorities
>stealthy
>durable
>waterproof including "bathtub floor" design
>cheap
>easy to set up

Lightweight and small is a plus, but I'm willing to sacrifice a little to get something better in the above categories, especially price and durability.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Definitely willing to consider secondhand options if someone knows some models I might be able to find on ebay.

Would this need to be dried out best packing away?

yes, of course
>>
>>944531
to what extent like completely dry or will just rubbing down with a shemagh do it?
>>
>>944533
completely dry ideally, you'll probably get away with packing it up damp for about a week

>>943267

Yeah, nothing wrong with chinese tents -- most tents are made there anyway.

Personally, I'd vouch for 3F UL Gear -- they make nice shit.

Also, Naturehike make a lot of nice kit as well.
