Late in 1934, Ruess set out alone into the Utah desert, taking two burros as pack animals. He was never seen again.
Survived against a posse of nine men, survived a stick of dynamite that destroyed his cabin. Went on to hike 85 miles and scale a 7000 ft mountain to evade the RCMP. His identity is still a mystery.
Went into the Nova Scotia wilderness to avoid WW2 conscription. Lived there for 60 years on his own.
I'm not quite sure what is going on itt, but it's neat. Please continue.
Where does /out/ buy their gear?
As locally as possible.

Talk about fishin
reposting from old thread,
want to target an old gravel pit turned section of river
Planning on night fishing, soaking baits for catfish , eels, whatever else wants to eat
also will throw out some shiners in hopes of monster trout or bass etc
what spots would you guys target?
river flows from left to right ( but incredibly slowly) there are also other odd crosscurrents etc
>>942814
there actually isnt any water flowing in from the gravel pond due to low water
also theres a ton of odd crosscurents from difference in depths and possible springs, since this used to be mined for sand/gravel etc
What do you people do for bear safety? Mace? Guns? No need?
Have you ever had an encounter with a bear or other wild animal?
I usually go/out/ on private land that has no bears but I've been thinking about going on crown land which may have bears. Do I need to be worried and do I need to bring bear mace or a gun? I have no firearm license so getting a gun would be a big hassle but if I should get one, what kind of gun? Keep in mind that all I know about guns is what I learned from video games as a kid.
>>941165
My standard line to liberals who see my gun when I pass them on the trail: "You don't need a gun to defend from bears, but it sure helps me sleep at night."
Most bears I've seen in the woods have run hard away from me in the opposite direction. In National Parks, where hunting isn't allowed and park-goers routinely feed bears (illegally), bears don't run away immediately, but as long as you keep an eye on them and clean up your campsite at night, you'll be fine. I've never had an encounter with a curious bear that escalated to violence.
You'd probably be better off asking /k/ to recommend a bear defense gun, but assuming you're in Canada and may be dealing with brown bears, you should think of something that can push a heavy bullet at a high velocity. Momentum is mass times velocity, and is a pretty good indicator of penetration capability, which you need to get through a bear's thick hide and muscles to penetrate a vital organ or central nervous system. In handguns, .44 magnum or other big bore revolvers are recommended. Rifles and shotguns are also often recommended, but obviously a long gun is much less portable. I carry a Glock 20 (10mm), but there are no brown bears where I live. I also carry bear spray, but don't really trust it.

>Mace? Guns?
Both.
Been close enough to mama griz and her 2 cubs that I could have kicked them.
See black bears about once a month through the summer.
Don't be retarded with food and you won't have a problem.
Ground pepper and little bells.
How heavy is too heavy? How much money is too much? I love the look and culture behind this pack but it is weighing in at 7lbs for 40L. Is this too much /out/? Am I stupid for buying this?

The Frost River and Duluth canvas bags have hipster tax.
Oh, i just noticed that L.L. Bean have changed their canvas rucksack design. It still looks good, but they raised the price by $11.

The Alder Stream ones still look like the best deal though, and they offer customization options.

Yes and yes. We can only give you practical advice, but don't let opinions on the internet stand in your way if you really want it.
During my time as an /out/ist I have been to the arctic, central Canada and the Georgian bay, and each of these trips have been ruined by these flying assholes. How do we defeat the winged parasite? What do you do when you gout /out/?
Well besides the obvious dousing your flesh with DEET (which I don't do) this is all I got:
1. Bring an oil lantern with you but burn citronella oil in it instead of regular lamp oil. This has a two-pronged benefit; the cintronella discourages skeetos but also oil lanterns are comfy as absolute fuck and you'll really enjoy it anyway. Just be sure you have a specific wick for when you burn citronella, separate from your regular oil wick.
2. Pic related. It's not that appealing at first but try a bug jacket (and pants, if you wear shorts or sleep exposed). Fucking hell the relief these things provide when you're in a real swarm of skeetos can't be beat. Changed my life when I finally broke down and got one. The mesh is very fine so it can get hot in there on a humid day, so dress scantily under there. Probably best not worn during active travel, but amazing to wear it while hunkering down around camp.
also what the hell pic of comfy lantern for burning citronella. can be had for like $10 including oil.

Has anyone learned to hunt as an adult? How did you go about it? I've been hiking for years and I'd like to try deer hunting, but every hunter I've met has learned from their fathers.
Anyone have experience learning to hunt as a grown ass man?
>>940324
No i learned young. The trick is, find someone who hunts and ask to go with. Many will help.
>>940324
>learn species identification
A Springboc is an antalope, not an ungulate.
Will you be hunting in Africa or a canned hunt in Texas?
>>940359
I know that, I just took this picture on vacation and liked it more than googling 'deer.'
Hunting in Washington State, and I don't know if canned or not. This is what I'm trying to learn. Having never hunted is it better to learn in a confined area?
Do you do it?
Driving through /out/ areas and living off the land as much as you can? It's hard to in most places but great if you're in low density countries.
Tell stories, pictures of builds, kits, etc.
Where this
Fuck off with your larping. Don't you have some kids to rape or priests to behead?
>>939786
Where can you overland?
/out/ cabins. preferably off grid
>>939107
Huh. I guess I just discovered a new fetish.
>>939107
I'll dump some of what I've got. Starting with exteriors.
>>939179
I'm sure this comes up often, but have you ever thought about just running away to live innawoods? Have you ever done it. I probs never will, but I dream of it often. What are some considerations one should make when it comes to this?
>>945099
I like women too much so no I won't do it.
>>945104
I mean, who's to say you couldn't find a gal to go with, or pick one up later who agrees with your choices?
I like to eat the leaves of wood sorrel while hiking, they're tasty and sour and a great thirst quencher
Make sure you actually drink water as well if you eat it regularly. The Oxalates in the leaves react with calcium in whatever else you eat and can begin to form kidney stones. Probably won't matter but I just thought you'd like to know in case your dick starts feeling funny one day.
small amounts of toxic oxalic acid gives it a sharp taste, a little poison is sometimes a good thing.
>>944861
Are those the ones that taste like apples?
Anybody else watch the Bike Wanderer on YouTube? He has been on the move for the past few years and filming the whole thing. He comes up with some crazy adventures and operates on a shoestring budget. I think the guy is an /out/ champ.
>>944593
Is this the modern way to support yourself traveling? Instead of busking or begging, you make youtube videos and live off of ad money. I wonder how hard it is compared to learning the guitar or how to do spray paint art of planets and shit. Probably comparably slim earnings are achieved either way, however one is almost completely independent of location. You can make a good video from anywhere but not everyone is going to want to buy your shitty spray paint nebula.
>>944609
Yeah if you are entertaining to watch it's worth money. Youtube is visible to the world and always available. Complete idiots like pewdiepie are more famous than Hollywood actors.
>>944593
I don't care if you are shilling or faking for viewers, I just subscribed homie.
Got a question for you /out/.
Rolled? Or folded?
Why?
>>944304
Folded are normmally lighter, and they also make good chairs. But the rolled mats are about half the price.
Personally i use an inflatable. But given that choice, foldable.
>>944304
ive always been a poorfag and used rolled but recently i began inheariting gear from my dad. (hes not dead hes gettting new stuff) id say fuck em both get inflatable. only because it saves so much weight its unbelievable.
>>944314
Actually, inflatables are about the same wieght. Mine is 10 oz.
Where it savevs is space. Andthey just work better.
If you camp twice a year yea ruck it. But i literally spend hqlf my nights on my pad. Even the rei version is logarithmicly better than a folded z.
Is it legal to pretty much just go deep into the wilds like the Adirondack Mountains with some gear, set up a camp site, and camp? Would I get in trouble for trying to do so?
I know most national parks allow dispersed camping, however not for more than 20-30 consecutive days. Look into the land you plan to camp on. If you camp for 3 weeks, then step away, for a day (resupply food) or something, then you'd legally be within the right to go for another consecutive however many days is allowed for that particular area.
>>944042
Laws are for people who ask permission.
>>944081
Is this even true? I see this posted a lot but I can't believe it. I live near Acadia, which, granted, is tiny; but the rangers here will kick your ass, fine your ass, and potentially ban you from the park.
However, the Adirondacks are not a national park. OP if you care whether or not what you're doing is illegal, it's probably not for you in the first place.
Doing my first bear hunt this spring - spot and stalk - non of this baiting business...
What essentials do i need to take?
Got any good links to cool vids to get the stoke up etc?
find their footprints then some of their shit
look at shit whats in it... berrys? fish?
etc. they will go from den to watter and to food source . find trails to and from water to den or food to den. stop a lot and look in trees some times they up in tree too.
best results from dogs (bait too) but you probably dont have access to bear dogs maybe think about a large caliber hand gun (44mag) if in really thick bush as a back up. if you have a long bolt action.
>>943663
Why do you have to kill them? You can just use a bear bell and bear pepper spray. When you go into the woods, you are in the bear's home. Killing a man in his home is a crime. With bears, it's the same.
>Got any good links to cool vids to get the stoke up etc?
Do you masturbate to gore videos too? What's different between this and a grandmother getting tortured or killed? There is none.
You will need to find the bears first. This will be done by scouting food sources, getting to a place with good vantage, travel by boat, or whatever works in the area you have to hunt.
Once you find a bear in a stalkable postion, you need to keep the wind in your favor, meaning blowing so that the bear will not smell you. You also need to move quietly as bear's hear pretty well. The do not see all that well in general, so if you are carful and move slowly you can get close enough for a quality shot.
I like to eat the things I shoot, so I prefer fall bears to spring bears. As spring bears have been denned up all winter and I think have more of a uric acid taste and no fat.
