1. How much deadfall could an average 10 acre forest create each month?

2. How much (dried) deadfall would a wood cooking stove consume per use? "Use" being s pot of boiling potatoes, and cooking bacon & eggs.
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>946003
Depends. Deadfall is essential to maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Without the rotting down wood, the forest would lose out on all that protist and fungal feeding behaviour which is important for making nutrients available to the rest of the woodland., not to mention all of the other species that depend on it.

Steal all the deadfall to boil potatoes and fuck up a forest, bro.

True story.
>>
>>946004
you won't "fuck up a forest" by collecting deadfall, ecosystems are more robust than that. there will be less life, like around popular camp spots, less insects and birds, probably everything else also.
>>
>>946010
thats what he means by 'fuck up', you retard.

Removing deadfall = a discernible effect on the local environment

>>946003
how long is a piece of string?

too many factors for a single answer. Nutrients/quality of the soil, number, type of trees, latitude, altitude, quantity of sunlight, pest species, local air quality, all factors that will effect tree growth.

If you OWNED the land, which I assume you don't as you're asking NEET-tier /out/ questions you could allocate a portion of your land to short-rotation coppice or another fuel crop to sustain your heating and cooking needs.

What's your budget solution for a nice down sleeping bag?

I'm on a budget and need a 0- 10 degrees Celcius sleeping bag/quilt/whatever for around 100 euros.

What's your project. (overall cost, materials used etc, pics?)

Did the PCT with this last year. $50 shipped, it's a no brainer. It's about a pound heavier than most down mummy bags because of the low quality fill, but the weight made it more cozy for me and I couldn't justify spending 3X more for that little of weight savings.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Winter-10-to-25-Degree-Sleeping-Bag-Black-Blue-Camping-Outdoor-Duck-Down-/190912622979?hash=item2c73477183:g:ru0AAOSwT5tWKEKC

Quality down fill is expensive, even if you were to stich your own bag. In a perfect world, I would blow $400 + on an oversized down quilt from Enlightened Equipment. Good luck faggot.

Sure you did.

What is/out/'s consensus on Quilt's? I'm interested in knowing how they perform compared to bags.

Hey /out/, my friends and I are planning a camping trip to the smoky mountains this spring.
However, smoky mountains national park has a lot of fire and camping restrictions.

There are a lot of national forests right next to the national park. Do you suggest going to a national forest instead? Which national forest should we go to?
11 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I live right by the smokies, can I ask what makes you want to come here? They're really just glorified hills, but tourists come from all over the world to see them.
>>
>>944373
My friends and I are from Ohio and we're going to be on spring break. We just want a good place to go camping and sadly ohio is a shitty place to go camping baka.
>>
>>944378

>ohio is a shitty place to go camping

Anyone have the greentext of the dude that gets turned on by Ohio?

GSMNP is one of the most if not the busiest national park in the country. Check out the Nantahala or the Pisgah instead. Same hills, creeks, and foliage, less people, less restrictions.

I need help guys,

I have the opportunity to buy pic related (Montane Extreme Smock) locally for £40 (RRP is about £120).

I wear a fleece/pertex smock in the cooler months and really rate the system. It's perfect for spring and autumn.

But I'm wondering what kind of useable temperature range I'm going to get out of the Montane.

It'll be for winter / alpine use. I run cold and I'm not a fan of adding / removing layers, don't own any shells currently. It's a kilo of pile fleece, will it be too warm in reality?

So what should I do, buy or pass?
15 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Grab it! Montane make gret gear abd that's a good price. Any chance you can get two? Id be very interested if so!
>>
Yeah I'm going to pick it up anyway. If it's too warm I can pass it on.

Srsly tho what's happened to /out/
if it's not about something shiny consumer shit like knives you get no activity...

Guess no one else is a fan of pile and pertex.
>>
Pile and pertex is a good combination, but the extreme smock is definitely for the winter only. Its its much above 0 you'll cook wearing it doing any real activity. However, strangely enough it doesn't feel that warm if you were just standing about.

I'm going to go for a full out 7 day hike in Iceland in the summer (Laugavegur), anybody know what sort of boots would suit the climate and terrain? I have some in mind, but maybe someone knows better

>>943537
Honestly, for a 7 day trip in those conditions it's going to come down to comfort, really. Your best bet is to go try on a few pairs and see what's good for you.
>>
>>943769
I'll be checking out different stores, any features I should look out for?
>>
>>943778
I don't know what brands you can come by where you live but I'll highly recommend Hanwag or Meindl.
How much does it rain in Iceland in the summer? I have been using leather boots similar to the ones in your pic without goretex for many years. Usually they're water-proof "enough" with the use of wax. But this summer I was on a long hike in Scotland and there I would really have loved some boots with a membrane

Hello /out/ I'm looking for some good gloves for cold weather, Do you have any suggestions? So far I found these surplus polish army ones. Have anyone tried them?
25 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Im not sure how much help i can be cos i run really hot, but for skiing and mountaineering i wear rab vapour rise gloves. Not the warmest but they dont overheat, which i find perfect
Ill throw an xl buffalo mitt over the top if it gets really cold and/or really wet. Didnt use them in 2016 but belaying in -20 something in january 2015 they were amazing, worth every penny

Personally id spend a little more on a mountaineers glove or a wool liner/mitt combo, but army gloves coyld be a good budget choice cos id imagine you need dexterity to shoot with them. What material are they?
>>
>>941602
>Each glove consists of an outer shell made from a cotton blend and an interior layer of insulation designed to keep the heat in

That's what the descrption says
>>
>>941615
Cotton is not a good material, especially when against skin. Itll wick good for about 15 minutes and then just sap heat, conductive heat loss i think its called

Synthetic insulation is good tho, all gloves are gonna get soaked so warmth when wet is vital. Id look at a entirely insulation glove (thinsulate and primaloft are great) or one with wool agaisnt the skin

If youre defo after surplus ive got a pair of northern ireland gloves i got for £6. 30g thinsulate and a leather shell, ive used them once and they were too sweaty but for the price id recommend them to anyone

So basically some time ago there was a post about what would you do if suddenly you woke up tomorrow and every single human being had just vanished but you.

Loved that thread and haven't seen any ever since.

Let's say all nuclear plants shut down safely, and electricity and water just shut down as they would without anyone there to maintain.

What would you guys do?

Grab my pack and walk down to the river, pick a house with a fireplace and chill. By spring I'd have to go grab some seeds to grow a few things. In between planting season and harvesting season I'd use the extra time to construct a monument to the loss of all humanity, well... except Trump; it was probably his fault anyway.

For the first few months I would probably just wandering around trying to find the best alcohol to drink.

After I got bored with that I would start burning down a lot of buildings of people/organizations I didn't like.

Finally once I was bored with that I would start leaving clues and messages all over the country that would hopefully lead whatever alien civilization to a single point in my country. I would try to make it done sorry of really difficult and convoluted trail for them to follow that would take weeks or even months to follow. All messages would speak to finding the ultimate wealth of knowledge and power of our lost race.

Finally when they get to the end, all they'll find is a small room with an intricately crafted mural of me fucking their mother in the ass (I'll make sure to leave as much detail as possible to explain it to them) and they'll see my dead corpse in the corner flipping them the bird.

I would pack my van with as much canned food, water, and ammunition
(I would make stops around my local grocery store/gun store/ect) that it could carry, get enough gasoline, then drive southeast to Hoover Dam. I would make some stops along the way, for example, visit all the places I couldn't like ft Knox and military bases. Once I reach Hoover dam, I would have a month of electricity to set up aquapontics and solar panels (Im an electrical engineer) in a mansion of my choosing. I would hunt and fish in lake mead and the surrounding areas, and for water I would either get it from the Colorado river or rainwater collection. As the climate returned to normal because of no humans then I could live the rest of my life using the animals and water from the Colorado. I would make sure my house was upriver of the Colorado so when the dam collapses I wouldn't be glassed. Maybe in the future I would do something with biodiesel and stuff like that.

I bought some meme gear before I realized the only reasonable thing to do /out/ is hunt or fish, and if you don't know how to do either of those already then the only thing to do is fish.
Once you've started fishing, you can start designing trips around it, and expand those in whatever ways you want.

There's a lot of dicks and snobs on this board don't listen to them. There are a ton of outdoor activities to involve yourself in, but some of the basics would be to get a decent tent, some basic clothing 'rain shell, boots or hiking shoes', a comfortable pack. The biggest mistake is spending a fortune on gear you don't really need or buying high end gear right off the bat.

The white-and-orange one in the center of the picture is the logo for a video game - Overwatch (aka Team Fortress 3). Fucked if I know why someone would stencil-ffiti that to a boulder out in the middle of a canyon.

I don't recognize the black-and-orange one on the left side of the photo but it wouldn't shock me if it was another stencil-ffiti logo from an equally shitty video game.
