Is orienteering something I can teach myself? There aren't any classes that are reasonably close. Spend a lot of time /out/ and figured I should know more than I do. Most time I am /out/ I have a pretty good sense of where I'm at, or I take for granted that I'm on a well maintained and obvious trail. Should I know more?
Yes, just make sure you start out practicing in accessible locations before you wandering into the backcountry.
There's lots of good books on the subject, personally I like the Mountaineers Outdoor Basics - Wilderness Navigation

Well, you can teach yourself to get lost and subsequently be lost.
That's halfway there, right?

Is there anything you can't teach yourself?
Seriously, name it.
You should look up a PDF for the Us Army guide to land nav.
Shooting azimuths, pace count, and terrain association is all you need really.
