About to go spend 60 days by myself in deep Fiordland (pic related)

My survival kit is basically:

>several drink bottles (lots of clean rivers/creaks)
>a shitty folding knife
>waterproof sleeping bag with cover thing (dunno if they have a name?). Area is wet as fuck
>a small gas cooker + lighter/matches
>PSE Madfish bow + arrows
>some rope, dunno why I'd need it tho
>some instant noodles/chocolate to last me a week in case I start starving
>camera+solarcharger for picture taking

Mainly going to be hunting fish since all our birds down here are protected. We also have deer/pigs which I'll go for if I run into any, got proper permits just in case.

Never been on /out/ desu but figured you guys would be worth asking for advice. Never gone innawoods before, only hiking via tramping huts. Anything I should add to my kit before I leave?

A map and compass so that you know for sure which way to hike to salvation once you run out of noodles and start to starve.

It deepens upon the calibre.

Help me decide between the Cold Steel SRK and the Leatherman Surge. I already have a cheap Gerber folding knife and I already have a Leatherman Wingman, so either choice will be a nice upgrade for me.

The Surge would be for every day carry (I dont mind the weight) and the SRK would just be used occasionally when camping / hunting / killing a chicken at my mother-in-laws house

Thanks, I was leaning towards the MT. I bought a Swisstool RS off Amazon on Monday and it didn't lock up, so I exchanged it. Got a replacement one on today, same problem, sent it back. Decided to look around at other options, but I think the Surge was always in my future...

Ways to obtain food in the wilderness?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Traps, snares, hunting, fishing, foraging...

Care to be more specific?

Just to be nice, I'll give you a freebie. No picture, I'm on my phone. The Squirrel Pole.

Get yourself a long branch or small sapling. Lean it up against a large tree where you have seen squirrels (oak trees most likely). About a 45 degree angle. Set your snares along the pole, about every 8" should do.

Wait. Check your pole every 8-12 hours. If you did it even remotely correct, you should have one. If you did everything right, and Mr. Coyote hasn't gotten to it first, you should have 3-4. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you might get a small coon or possum.

Low effort design makes it worth the nutrition you get out of a tree rat or two, and a coon or possum would actually be a net positive.

Thinking of building pic related in the mountains with just materials from innawoods... What can i use as the mortar to hold the rocks in place? I dont think there is any clay in these mountains but im honestly not sure

Also is there a primitive way to make smooth bricks out of rocks? I would think using a chisel would just shatter them completely
9 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
There's no mortar being used in either the fire ring nor the patio. Probably just rock dust/mud between the stones in the ground. Look carefully at the cobbles -- see how each one has at least one point of contact with every rock surrounding it? That's what you'll need to do to keep it all falling apart over time. It's actually harder than a motherfucker.
Seems like logs are a better solution for seating, but you could build a drystone wall to sit on if you had your heart set on it.
Just watch a few drystone masonry videos on youtube.
As for your last question, depends on the type of rock in your area. If it's granite, odds are good you can find a lot of nice slabs like in that pic.

Maybe this is not a huge problem for those of you living in warmer areas where the fish reproduce quickly, but where I am there is a problem with asians fishing local fish stocks out of existence.

Do they know what they are doing? I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that the older ones come from parts of the world where the fish breed all year round and they are just not aware of how slow cold climate fish reproduce. Doesn't change the fact that they annihilated the local fish populations in a few of the lakes my relatives and their cottage-going friends used to fish at.

Thoughts?

Are they breaking any laws?

If not the problem is with the state regs and limits.
>>

A lot of asians who fish don't give a fuck about bag limits. Same with mexicans. Seems to be a 3rd world thing...

>inb4 china isn't third world.
If your country cannot supply clean fresh water to at least 90% of its population. Its third world.

Unbelievable as it may be, I have just had a thought. As is proper I have immediately come to this humble place to propose an activity based on the aforementioned thought. A Monthly /out/ Challenge.

There could actually be two challenges a month. One casual tier and one high tier so as to allow for participation at all levels.

Some challenge category ideas had so far are;

Primitive Crafts
Minimalist Challenges
Woodcarving
Firemaking
Foraging
More stuff?

Thoughts? Comments? Criticisms?

Alright, /out/ists, I want to get into bow hunting, want to hunt anything from birds to fish to deer (if I ever get the chance),
Need some tips on what bows and arrows/ arrowheads to use.

The first decision to make is compound vs trad. Trad will be cheaper initially but it'll take much longer to reach a hunting standard of accuracy and consistency. Compound will conversely cost more but be easier to reach standard and (provided you're good enough) will let you hunt at longer ranges.

If you're shooting trad and hunting deer you're more or less limited to fixed two-blade heads. Compound gives you a few more options (mechanicals, hybrids, fixed 3- and 4-blade heads) - all of them work and are basically trade offs in cutting diameter, penetration and ease of tuning for flight against one another.

Birds and small game can be shot with broadheads, but there're a range of small game heads and blunts out there designed to kill by transferring energy (rather than cutting) and to get snarled up in grass/turf rather than getting lost on a pass-through or a miss.

Shooting fish needs a bowfishing rig - a fibreglass arrow with a harpoon point with a line spooling off a reel that attaches at the bow's stabiliser bushing.

Arrow choice will depend on trad vs compound. Carbons are great for either. Conventional wisdom is that for trad hunting you want to build an arrow weighing 10-12 grains per pound of draw weight (some shoot up to 15gpp) and for compound anywhere 5-10gpp that achieve the desired combination of speed and momentum (7gpp is pretty common).
>>
>>944779

If you go compound, I'd get a 60# peak weight compound with an IBO of 320+ fps, get it set up at a pro shop and get it tuned to shoot standard diameter carbon weighing 400-440 grains. The simplest set-up would be a whisker biscuit, a fixed multi-pin sight (4 or 5) and your choice of 8" stabiliser.

As to specific bow, pick is going to be informed by what you like and what you can afford. Being a newer model and more expensive in compound bows does tend to translate to performance.
>>
>>944779
what is the difference between a compound and a recurve bow? After searching for a bit, I thought about getting this one: https://www.amazon.com/Samick-Sage-Takedown-Recurve-Bow/dp/B00IRBZPTU/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Is anyone else concerned? How do we as outdoors enthusiasts prevent the sale of public lands? How do we make the case that our access to those lands is more important than private investment? If we lose the national forests and monuments, the next generation of people won't know what it's like to camp outside of a campground, track and hunt big game, or take peaceful walks away from the bustle of national parks.

I'm 21 years old and my dad never taught me how to do anything outdoors and build things for myself. I've been raised by a single mom that lived in its own misery and lived in flat all my life.

However, I do have a dream of building a house before I hit my 30s and have a garden/farm outside.

Can anyone give me some insight to where should I even begin, as I said, both of my parents taught me nothing about life or being a man in general. I did pretty damn good on my own and digested a lot of their depression/anger, but it's time to move on my own and plan life out.

I have no idea about welding/being a plumber/working with wood and making things out for myself/electricity,.. The only thing I know and am pretty good at is pretty much cooking/chores/cleaning,.. Things that normally women do.

How do I make a plan to see how much will building a house/land cost me, learn about gardening, maintainance of house, etc.. I don't know how to put specific question, but I hope you understand my situation.

I'm currently a student and don't really have much money, but I want to plan this shit out to perfection and have a goal to strive for.

A kinda bad time to do that, it will still be wet and snowy in the /out/ parts of scandinavia, especially the fells. The best place would probably be the fyordiest parts of southern Norway, so look that up.
