We are an /ic/ based art Discord group running since 2013 dedicated to the improvement of each member's artistic abilities through peer support, critiques, and friendly competition.
The group's on Discord, but we use deviantart to keep track of everyone's posting.
If you will only lurk this isn't the group for you. We want people who participate in the community.

Since the old draw thread is pretty much dead I'm just going to be an asshole and make my own thread.
Started this piece about 2 weeks ago. Had to take a >1 week break because my computer broke. Now that I look at it with fresh eyes I'm pretty sure I'm not ever gonna finish it...
I'm at a skill level where If I'm just doing a simple study, it'll look pretty much like whatever I'm referencing so that's good. If I'm doing a simple character on a simple background it'll also look good enough to get dem likes and definitely good enough to put in my shitty portfolio. I can also do landscapes and vehicles and shit to an extent. The real problems present themselves when I'm trying to do multiple things at once.
I just can't do a big illustration with lots of elements and get them to work properly. At least not consistently. Most of the time the composition looks good at the start but everything gets cluttered at some point and I just give up.
My question goes to the guys who are all ready in the concept art/illustration industry:
In addition to doing studies, should I just keep doing the simple shit I'm at least decent at to land some shitty jobs or should I keep trying and failing with doing bigger pictures with more stuff?
>>2718564
>should I just keep doing the simple shit I'm at least decent at to land some shitty jobs or should I keep trying and failing with doing bigger pictures with more stuff?
It can't hurt to take on a few jobs and make some money and get experience (so long as the jobs are not underpaying you or anything). That said, you should work on being able to handle a full illustration.
Basically you need to start doing more thumbnails and planning before jumping into a final image. The term "polishing a turd" applied to what you are doing here. I can tell that a lot of this has to do with you being too detail oriented and not big picture oriented. You're rendering out ever tiny bump and texture and detail before you even got a good composition or figured out the background or the lighting properly. Doing daily speedpaintings in addition to other studies might help. If you have a time limit then you can't do any detail and are forced to think only of the composition and mood and general lighting.

Thanks a lot for the reply anon. You're a 100% right about me. I'm terrible at speed painting. Most of the time I'll start a speed painting and end up polishing it for four hours. It's just really hard to for me to keep in mind WHY I'm doing the exercise.
>>2718580
Just put a time limit on yourself, say for 30 minutes or an hour. Or you can do your studies and sketches on canvases that are like 300x500 pixels so it's literally impossible to add details and you just work on the important things. Or only use a big brush so you can only make big shapes and no details. Or only let yourself do one brush stroke every 15 seconds so you have to think and make it count. Or something else you come up with.
Set some strict limitation so your brain can't be dumb and forget why it is doing something in the first place.
What a fucking bore.
Art that isn't illustration thread (though threadpainting is welcome.)

I've been in love with Rommy de Bommy for a long time now, yet something has always made me wonder: what the hell are her purses and necklaces made of? In all the descriptions of her products, she says they're made of of "soft/hard foams" and are "super super lightweight." What do you think they're made of /ic/?
(Note: she has a website, rommydebommy.com, and an etsy under the same name)
Btw this is the most recent WIP she has on her website. Looks like model magic (though unlikely as she lives in the Netherlands)

why do you guys like doing this shiz. I know a couple of people how got killed tagging. Next gonna be you op if you don't get a life.
Gregor is from Hauser and Wirth. You've got no chance. You've got 0 chance. "Who was elected to..." how wicked is that?
It's not even someone different. It's the same company.
Is it that all the same people are all on all the same boards that all the same people get awarded and voted for and chosen or am I wrong. It's seems it might be. I reckon.
not that it will concern /ic/
>Thousands upon thousands of artists that are heavily experienced in the fundamentals
>No one ever tells struggling artists that waste years upon years what they should do, and it's a virtual rarity when they do
>Most likely out of fear of creating more competition
Is this the true toxicity of the artistic community?
I can't sit on my high horse. I do the same.
Yeah right. The resources are there. Just fucking go at it, retard.

The resources are there, but not if you're a 15 year old kid on deviant-art.
It might be different now though.
How do people even find the energy to make vent art? I'm too shut down to lift a fucking pencil and when I actually try it ends up being some edgefag bullshit that looks like it was conceptualized by a Family Guy writer and drawn by a child copying a How to Draw Manga book.
Oh fuck, didn't mean to post such a large image, sorry
What is vent art?
Its okay to do vent art, but i do not think it is a neat idea to post it online...

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?
>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].
What do we draw?
>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.
What's a low effort warning?
>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.
>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.
What happens if I'm eliminated?
>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.
How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?
>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.
Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?
>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

what program would best be used for creating a comic/doujin?
i've always used photoshop for years, but i really hate the way comic style art ends up looking. it's way too rough and unclean. so i started looking for alternatives. i just tried sai and it's amazing, in the way it looks at least. but no where near as versatile as photoshop.
I've heard manga studio 5 is good, and I'm considering it, but id really like some other opinions before investing in it.
already read a lot of reviews on google and there's more than a few saying sai is better, but that just won't work for me. lineart in sai and colouring/editing/effects in photoshop is an option, but if i could do it all in 1 program i'd like to.
also the wiki in the sticky doesn't mention pros and cons of various programs which could be a nice addition.
clip studio paint is what you're looking for. mango study quatro vagina is the old version.
>>2718179
Clip Studio Paint is made specifically for that shit you want.
Use that instead and try to not listen to any faggot before you personally pick the program.

Just pirate it u dumb faget
Not sure where I am meant to make a thread like this, correct me if I'm wrong in posting this here, but can anyone identify this font or give me one similar?
and I want to share it with the world. I really enjoyed making this lil guy and I can definitely see drawing becoming a hobby, but wow was it tedious. Any tips on how to make it less so? Done in Paint with the spray can thing.
Mileage. Make a lot more. It's less tedious if you have some practice to build on and if you make it a habit.
Also you might want to upgrade to a program that has layers and masking tools, so you don't have to overpaint stuff over and over again.
>>2717983
What program do you recommend? I use a mouse. Thanks.

I like it, the music is pretty sweet. Reminds me of a music video from the 90's. I was a bit put off by the clean vector text in the beginning since it sticks out like a sore thumb compared to everything else. Also the dust effect looks a bit fake and it appears as if it's the same shapes over and over? Maybe you could make it a bit more subtle.
>>2715496
hey thanks for the feedback! I will make note, yeah the clean text is off putting, this video was just a test though.
>>2715485
The colors are quite nice, though the stable-ness of the image is kinda odd, i'd like to see shifting of the frame just a little.
