Hi i have a question about "What is Plagiarism" really is when it comes to photography to Illustrations.
Here are my questions (Below)

• is it Art theft / Plagiarism if i use a photograph of other sources as a reference and recreate it into an Illustration?
• is it Art theft / Plagiarism if i use a live models photograph (Like cosplayers and so) But only the Models "Pose" nothing more...
(The rest is original, but the Pose is referenced)

i'm still new into art world and i see myself good at making it. but only when i'm using a references for my works.
i'm not trying to copy any other artists and i know that's a borderline, but seems thinking that i'm using a "Reference"
in my illustrations seems like i'm quite lost about is it wrong or is it right thing to do so.

But the only things that i'm using as a references is the model "Poses" and Live "Photograph backgrounds"
and the rest will be done Originally (no tracing or copying of the rest of elements/subject of the reference itself)

Its a matter of ownership. You can't plagiarizer public buildings and areas. Cos players don't own the characters they are dressed up as. Also it is theft stealing other peoples ideas as your own. Also there is contention of using the image of real people to base your own to create your own art property, but in some cases the individual has to send in pictures of themselves to the US office for protection against that. Still its an ass move.

Honestly I think it's a really tricky topic. The laws vary based on where you live a bit (ie China doesn't give a shit), but mostly people have no idea what the laws actually are and there are tons of misconceptions presented as fact even by big name artists. A lot of people believe the "change X% and it's okay!", and I even had one art director try to tell me to steal photos but just flip it horizontally and change the colours and it's okay. The best course of action is to either not do it at all by using your own reference and avoid it entirely, or just do a really good job hiding your tracks.

Just fyi: many many top level pros are "stealing" photos and things by either copying parts of it barely changing it, or using it directly in their image as a photobash. Some people do it very frequently and blatantly, and are technically open to being sued. BUT, I haven't really heard of many (any?) cases of legal action being taken that resulted in any penalties. The only one that comes to mind is the Fairey Obama poster scandal but that was very high profile and anything in illustration and the entertainment industry tends to go without getting the law involved even when someone is caught stealing (which happens often enough). Most of the time the photographer or others are completely unaware though.

your photo's illustration is much different than the photo. it's more that it was drawn from a public place than a photograph. there are many things which are added and reduced.

I haven't even started work for them yet. I don't want to scare away potential work and seem like I'm ignoring their friend request but this is my personal facebook and I don't want someone I barely know friending me. I try to keep my personal stuff and professional stuff separate.

I really want to man up and take this shit seriously. I want to ask myself all the hard questions and do uncomfortable things.

the problem is until now I've seen art as sort of an escape, almost a relaxing aspiration. I know a lot of people here draw for a living so I'd like to know how to pretty much become you. I want to gauge the kind of cojones I'm gonna need to pull up.

most of all, I want to see myself become serious and I want my parents and professors to understand that I am serious.

currently the topics that make me the most uncomfortable is money and putting myself out there.

>>
Charles bargue course. Sight-size it and do it properly where you get the drawings *exactly* correct.

Then go learn perspective and construction, i recommend robertson+bridgman+hampton.

Charcoal only, final destination, for 2 years.

Never, ever copy a photo again. Only master illustrations/works, direct observation and memory/imagination.

NEVER COPY PHOTOS AGAIN UR PROVERBIAL ARTISTIC BALLS WILL FALL OFF

Hello /ic/ could anyone help me create a drawing timetable like this one but help me fit it around my work schedule? I mostly work 9-5 Mon-Fri and the occasional evening where I do some agency work.
Also lets just have a general thread about drawing plans and timetables that you use.

I posted this in another thread but I'll copypaste it since it's relevent here:

Start by taking inventory. Work out how much time you have free to practice in/ how much time your energy will let you practice. Then make a list of all the things you want to practice and rank them in order of what is most important to you. Then set up a routine, it can a one day or multiple day plan. Put the things most important to you first so they will definitely get done, I put creating art as the first thing since there is no point gitting gud if you aren't going to use your skills to make some art. Put the less important stuff later, if your practice gets interrupted at least you got the important stuff done. Then put a list of little bits and pieces it might be interesting to practice if you have more energy than usual one day.

I think you meant to say you rely on a crutch of "trippy" to validate how shit you are without having to confront your lack of ability and improve yourself.

What you posted isn't trippy, it isn't thought provoking, it's astoundingly worse than most stoner art (and most of it is pretty bad). It just looks like so much other beginner shit, but at least those beginners have the decency to admit it's bad because they're bad not because that's what they're "going for"

Sage.
>>
>>2723684
Hmm well seeing how there is only opinion in art and not right or wrong I don't see how most of that makes sense. Sure its not trippy, but my instagram has got psychedelic art on it. I am not sure if you understand the picture I posted; if you do I would love hear it.

What are the main skills in drawing? I'm trying to allocate my time and I've come up with Anatomy, Gesture, and Landscape.

Landscape isn't a fundamental "skill" in the same sense as anatomy and gesture. It's a genre, like portrait and still life.
>>
>>2723669

Anatomy is basically the same if you're talking genres, knowing human anatomy isn't necessarily a "fundamental" skill to art in the sense that lots of others are (IE applicable to basically any piece - knowing human anatomy won't help if you're not drawing a human). I still consider it a fundamental skill though because I like drawing people.

Anyway OP, I consider the fundamental skills this way:

Basic shapes / forms and how to construct from them (this includes being able to "see" and depict 3d on a 2d surface)
Perspective
Composition
Observation (IE to get proportions / placements correct and spot what's wrong)
Colour theory & values
Gesture
Anatomy (if you ever plan on drawing people)

They all tie into and enforce one another, and if you're competent in all of them you'll have a very flexible toolbox.

Why was pre renaissance art bad in different ways than art that is bad today?

>>
1,2,3 point perspective wasn't invented yet
>>
pre-renaissance art meaning literally everything before 14th century? or the period before the renaissance (medieval)?

medieval art was "bad" because it moved from the greco-roman focus on concrete outer form to the considerably more abstract christian focus on inner form, and because of eastern influence which was coming from a totally different artistic tradition (also more abstract)

art before that was "bad" for a lot of reasons, for one it was fairly hard to expose yourself to art unless you lived in a city, also there weren't a lot of people who would pay you to make it

i dunno it's a pretty terribly worded question

Why can't I stop redlining? edition

Post your current drawing here and give constructive critique to others!
Please make sure your posted image is clear, DOWNSIZED TO AROUND 1000 PIXELS WIDE, ROTATED TO THE CORRECT ORIENTATION, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one and then hug a kitten for good luck.

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Tuition: 80 percent of tuition covered by 2 scholarship issued by ArtCenter, other 20 covered by part-time job, loans, family helping out.

Term: 1st, in week 5-6.

Major: Illustration

Campus life: people sleep around a lot, everyone is generally extremely nice. You get comfortable relatively fast even if you're shy.

Both campus are really high tech, you can actually "see" where your money is going. With cintiq tablets readily available to check out, expensive free stuff, $700 wheel chairs for working, equipment, workshops with notable people etc.

Living situation: I'm a 5-8 minute walk from the south campus from my apartment. Which is nice because you can just go to campus at night and work on the tablets or empty rooms. You also meet upper terms who are more then happy to
help.

Feel free to ask me anything, so far I'm not regretting going.

What kind of homework do you get and how much do they info dump per day?
>>
>>2715425

>What kind of homework do you get

I'm taking 5 classes this term. How much work you get per class really depends on your professor. 3 of my classes gave a bunch of assignments from day one while others started out with a decent amount but is slowly packing on the weight.

An example would be my Heads & Hands class. I get 4-5 assignments from that one class alone. Always have to do a painted portrait and hand studies, and the other assignments are usually focus on whatever theme we are focusing on the week.

While my Perspective class usually issues 1 super easy assignment and the one difficult problem.

My other classes are usually 1 big project where your instructor will give you an estimate how much time you should spend on the assignment (usually 4 hours worth of work)

>how much do they info dump per day?

I don't feel like they are "dumping" a lot of information, maybe my heads & hands class for we learn actually anatomy every week, but over all its not so much the information but the homework that feels like you have a ball chain around your ankle.
