Mileage. Make a lot more. It's less tedious if you have some practice to build on and if you make it a habit.
Also you might want to upgrade to a program that has layers and masking tools, so you don't have to overpaint stuff over and over again.

I personally use a...ahem, "borrowed" version of photoshop but there is other, free painting software like gimp or krita.
And like the previous anon said, if you can see yourself doing this more, a drawing tablet would be a worthwhile investment.

A tablet adds pressure sensitivity and a more intuitive way to digital drawing and painting, like with paper and pencil.
But if you are comfortable working with a mouse, that's fine. I've seen great stuff done with a mouse.

Just use a pencil till you get yourself a drawing tablet. Drawing with a mouse is a nightmare.
