>Vaporwave Art

Hey guys, I made this a while back and I want to improve on it but I don't know how. Can anyone help me? I want it to have a shadow underneath so it looks 'thick', and make it look like it was some type of 80's Hollywood flick.

I would love some help with this thanks!

Anons, is there a 'proper way' to absorb a specific art style?

Recently i'm shifting from environment design to characters, and I want to have a style similar to Shiyoon Kim, Mayumi Nose, Britanny Myers etc.

I have no idea how to 'absorb' this style just by copying it, is there a proper method of training that can help me? A schedule, something like it...

Everytime I draw I tend towards realism, so drawing this more 'cartoonish' style is more difficult.

Have solid fundamentals, then copy his drawings. Ic/'s stuck on the first one.
>>
>>2719931

Copying their drawings is step one but that's a pretty simplistic answer, anon, especially when you pair it with a cynical jab at everyone else.
It's not that useful unless you try to apply it.

You copy to understand it, deconstruct the elements and choices that make that style that style, but the key is applying the style to new subjects. IE taking a photo and drawing it "in that style", or doing drawings from imagination "in that style". If you're not thinking critically you're just copying lines.
>>
>>2719935

What do you mean by 'thinking critically'?
I mean, what do you look for when you think about a style?

For those of us make our living on Patreon Porn; have you ever thought what will you do when people move on to the next new porn artist and drop your donations?

I'm starting Patreon porn, and I know from the get go it's temporary cash. But it's the cash I needed to fund something more profitable.

If you're throwing all your eggs into one basket (porn) you're already fucking up. Porn is a phase. Nothing wrong with it, but it should never be your endgame.

Problem with porn artists is the same as with pornstars - they don't realize that after a while they will be doing extreme stuff to just get a little bit of past money and attention and then eventually they will be forgotten like countless before them.

I'm a total beginner. Never drawn before beyond school doodling. Since I'm at the total beginning either way, will learning to draw with my left hand make me effectively ambidextrous?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2719660
No, you'll just be able to draw with your left hand.
>>
>>2719661
Oh.

Will it take twice as long learning how to draw with both hands?
>>
>>2719668
probably not. A lot (not all) of drawing is done with the head, not the hands. So once you know what to do, and only need your dexterity to match that, it should go faster

Budding artisté(just had to say it) here. Bought a tablet at you guys' recommendation and I have a couple of questions about the thing. First off, the pressure feature seems kind of fiddly. Is it a bad idea to just turn it off and ignore it this early on? It seems like a quality of life thing more than anything else really. Secondly, I've watched some videos on drawing tablets and a lot of them were scratched to hell. Is this kind of wear unavoidable? Lastly, how long does a wacom pen nib last? I got answers ranging from 6 months to 10 years to forever. Maybe I'm just autistic but I hate the idea of stuff breaking with moderate use. That's it, thanks.

>First off, the pressure feature seems kind of fiddly. Is it a bad idea to just turn it off and ignore it this early on?
Most people use pen pressure for opacity. You can leave it off for size change. Painting without opacity is possible and some people do it, but it would likely make things harder for you as a beginner. Leave opacity set to 100% and have it set for pen pressure just to get used to painting, then later you can modify things slightly.

> Is this kind of wear unavoidable?
I've had my tablet 7ish years and it's worn the surface a bit but it's just superficial. There's no deep gouges or anything and it feels smooth to the touch so it doesn't matter.

>Lastly, how long does a wacom pen nib last?
It seems to vary from person to person depending how heavy handed you are. I've only changed it once in 7 years, but I've heard of other people needing to change it every few months because I guess they grind the nib into the surface really hard. Just so you know, the stylus holder thing that came with it you can unscrew it and there's replacement nibs in there.

Let's say someone mid-20s with zero experience starts drawing 4-5 hours a day. They practice from life and only do the fundies with a rigid goal of improving through exercises.

How many years before this person can draw well enough to be seen as "gud" and be able to confidently draw from imagination? I can already feel the incoming shitstorm from /ic/ ruffled at such a baseless question. But I know some of you already got gud and must have answers.

Again let's assume focused practice every day, mostly from life & practice studies. Drawing every day weekends+holidays for 5 hours daily and no fundrawing until the person actually has some competency. How long before this theoretical person is competent at drawing?

2 years until you're decent, 5 until you're gud, and from what i've seen you can become hireable after about 3 if you work your fucking ass off.
>>
>>2719655
It depends really on their natural aptitude and if they'd already studied anything that lends itself to the subject such as anatomy. Some people will pick it up right away some people will never really get there.
>>
The common answer is 10 000 hours of concentrated regular training. So a few years.

Obviously depends on the individuals visual perception, retention, direction and pattern recognition. 10 000 hours of idle cartooning will not net the same results as 10 000 hours as working from refs and accomplished artists.

There are no bad questions, but this is all in the sticky.

Today I'm starting taking part to a drawing class in my city. Lessons are more realism oriented with a lot of copying from real; to this date I've mostly drawn animu garbage and ignored realism, and only recently I started copying from real and learning anatomy. I don't want to tell them I draw manga because I don't want to have them spitting prejudices on me; what should I tell the teacher if she asks about my level? I think I would say I only have a year of drawing experience.

Pic related, garbage skull anatomy I've done this morning.

Yo, that picture is better than anything ive ever done.
Also, just tell her what you just explained there. If she's teaching a class about it, I doubt you'll be the first one to have told her that. Everyone has tried to emulate their favorite drawing style, and im sure she realizes that. Just give your best effort in class to learn what she's trying to teach and she'll give you the same respect as any other student. If she doesn't, that's a flaw in her character, not yours.

some pointers for that skull if ur still working on it. Firstly the jaw is a little narrow, you need more contrast in your lights and darks, make sure when shading you're also establishing shape so it looks 3d, other than that i dont see too many problems with it. also are u working from a real skull or images. also i advise that you feel your own face for bone structure etc, not for solid reference but it can guide you in the right direction and i find it can help.

How do I learn how to properly use color?

Sure there are books and tutorials on it but how do I exercise? There are draw threads here where the accuracy of anatomy and shading gets judged but are there any color experts here to give you tips?

Reproduce pictures and note how color behaves. That's about it.

Ideally, you'd want to read your resources to get the theory down so you know what to look for, but most of your studying should be happening on the canvas. So go ahead and study other people's work. Go ahead and paint still lives, scenery, models, and such while noting how the color in each scenario behaves. Note the lighting conditions, the relationship between each color and how their placement allows you, and subsequently the viewer, to discern contours, detail, texture, volume, and so on. Then apply what you figure out until it works.

There are some rules of thumb regarding color, such as darks tending to be cool and lights tending to be warm, but this isn't much of an absolute, and adhering to them will end up limiting you.

>Dad tells me to get my sleep schedule in order because he'll need me to help him install doors soon
>Say Ok
>Decide against doing studies for 2 days because I'll only forget it since I'll have to stay up for a night and a day
>Correct sleep schedule
>No longer feel like studying fundamentals anymore due to my day 1/2 off
>Had been going 5 hours a day for 2-3 weeks
>Have lost 20 hours of studying for a week
>Was going to jump to 8 hours a day
>Today have only done 2 hours so far, and I've barely learned anything

It might just be the fact that I'm not doing it how I want to. (2 hours of relaxation in the morning, 5 hours of studying, and then take rest of day off)

This also coincides with my disheartenment since I've realized I'm not learning enough about the functionality of anatomy.

Now I have to contend with the horrible urge to shitpost on /ic/ and play video games. I hope I'll get it under control by tomorrow.

How do you guys beat the dragon called laziness? I don't think I'll continue to study for the rest of the day. I still have to correct my sleep schedule some more.
