Holy fucking shit, /g/. You were right.
I got one of these puppies a few days ago and it's like the worst experience I've ever had in years. 10 years on Nvidia and I've had 1-2 driver crashes. 2 days on AMD and I've experienced around 20 of them.
>Small screen artifacts (lines, black boxes) randomly appear on screen.
>A couple of minutes of gaming crashes drivers and game
>BSODs. BSODs Everywhere
But hey! At least it's fucking running cool. It's got that going for it. Before you even asked, around 6 different drivers were checked, clean install was done, the rest of the system has been tested before. 960 was installed later and the system is working flawlessly.
Fuck me, /g/. I never expected this shit but more than that I never expected you to be right.
Forgive me.
7000 series were the last good AMD gpus. Write it down!

Just to be clear, I'm not asking for tech support here. The card's fucked. No question about it.
I'm just talking about what a shitty fucking piece of shit company AMD is and that against all odds /g/ is right.
Aaaaand AMD's last card is also a big disappointment. Can't even play games in 1080p and loses against a fucking GTX950. Currently the GTX950 is over 30€ cheaper and even includes free games like Doom.

I really wanna know this, what kind of laptops actually last long and work well? Macfags OUT.
Thinkpads

Acer laptops are plasticky crap
My Asus is thebbbbest. 8G RAM, i7, Nvidia Geforce 840m (I think it's March 2014), ~720$, bought in 2014. I use it to make music videos with Sony Vegas 13, It runs a lot of videogames very smoothly (I initially thought it was a crappy laptop but I found out it was always using the integrated graphic card, I know, patethic). Even though I played games less and less as I grew up. Now it's only local coop games with friends every once in a while.
I recently started studying computer science, and this laptop is a salvation! It also runs Ubuntu smoothly in a virtual machine (Useful for Java and SML courses right now).

> Wants to study computer science
> don't know the difference beetwen integrated and dedicated graphics card
now I know, suck my dick
Is there any onboard graphics card sufficient for modern gaming (not like max graphics FPS games, but other stuff) or do you basically need a discrete graphics card? Also, is there a way to get better graphics cards for cheap or should I just accept that I'm going to have to spend several hundred dollars on one?
Maybe you should stop caring about games
>>55979435
You can run most source games (cs:go, portal, half life etc) on integrated graphics. Starcraft II also worked pretty well at low settings on my shitty dell laptop before i built a PC.
And ignore intel's branding, there's very little difference between different types of IG - Iris Pro is basically the same everywhere and is relative to the overall power of your cpu but even if you have a top of the line i7 you still won't be able to run anything other than very minimum spec games. So, yes, a dedigated GPU is basically essential for anything complex.
Also anything lower than a 700-series will basically be a waste of money since it won't be much of a step up from modern IG. If you're low on funds look at the RX480, it's a pretty great card for $200 (and I say that as a GTX980 owner)

Also there's the standard "/g/ is not your personal tech support or consumer review website" tagline, unless you're contributing content (as opposed to asking questions) please don't make a new thread, there's a QDDTOT thread for exactly this purpose.
Hello /g/entlemen, i found this Terrans Force laptop in my basement and was wondering if I could get some help with it. It's missing the charger and the battery, I took it into a computer shop and they told me it probably needs a new motherboard. It gets video error when it turns on. I was wondering if it was worth me fixing it, or should I just strip it for parts?

Anyone here work in a computational chemistry or physics environment?
I have recently started in one and I come from much more of a physical science background than compsci so I'm new to /g/ things. I have been learning python to do small tasks but obviously that is quite slow for doing the actual calculations I need to do. What language do you guys recommend for doing very large calculations? For reference, the stuff my professor does sometimes takes around 30 hours of computer time. It's mostly molecular dynamics using GPUs.
I've asked some people in my department. The old people say "I say fortran, and the young people will say fortran is too hard to write and they'll tell you C". And then the young people say "I say C, and the old people think Fortran is actually better even though it isn't faster and it's harder to write with". In the lab we mostly use centOS for developing and running our codes and windows for everything else.
Grad student in CFD lab here. C++ is the standard, Fortran if you have vivid memories of the Great Depression.
Physics fag here. Been doing some research in computational cosmology. Used Fortran and sometimes C. Other fags in Molecular dynamics used Fortran as well as quantum espresso.
>>55979324
what kind of calculations are we talking about?
If my motherboard says it has "dual channel architecture" and i plug in 4 sticks will it still work? it has place for four. i already have 2x2 and want to add another 2x2. I know it maybe stupid question but please help me.
Yes it will work. You will have two pairs of ram using dual channel
>>55979267
thanks you my friend. one more question if you would be so kind. if my motherboard says 1066/1333/2000(OC) does it mean i have to somehow unlock 2000?
>>55979326
I believe that the if the RAM is capable of running faster than the mobo supports, the RAM will clock down run at whatever the max speed the mobo can support. (assuming it is compatible RAM)
I am not 100% sure on this but I believe that this is how it works.
eBay has a fucking four year old bug that they're not going to fix.
I went to sell an item, offered free shipping. Looked up the listing on my computer, looked fine. Looked it up the next morning on my phone, it said "CONTACT SELLER" in big red letters instead of "FREE SHIPPING." You know that's gonna scare off bidders.
Called them, talked in circles with an Indian allegedly named Chris who flat out denied it was happening because he didn't see the "CONTACT SELLER" thing on his computer and I couldn't get him to comprehend that PC and mobile browsers worked differently.
Googled it, people were experiencing the same issue in 2012 without it ever being addressed. Twenty fucking twelve!
How the fuck does a billion dollar e-commerce site run like that?
>>55979207
it's ebay
also, their poo in loo "customer" service reps are as incomprehensible as they are condescending
>>55979207
Only thing eBay is good for is getting disputes settled in your favor. The seller always loses, lol
>>55979207
Personally I've been thinking of switching over to amazon
Do used computer parts sell pretty well there?
What is the most important moment in computer history?

well no shit, do you know what eternal means ?
i have this idea for a while to create a free magazin with topics about tec and everything that circels it.
back in the the i published a magazin bout the psp homebrew scene.
would u hypothetically write one or two articels every month without any reward for an online magzin? consider that the magazin would be free and not contain any ads.
the option to get a printed version can be realized by simply linking to an online printing house.
in germany we had the "datenschleuder" which is dead more or less by now...

Go to the blind Russian that taught you english and get your money back.

Trying to install (ed)ubuntu on an old dell latitude d610, has been hanging on this for over an hour now. Any suggestions? It installed fine on a p3 Panasonic toughbook, so this should work, right?
>>55978716
sure
So what sort of time frame should I expect? Like I said, its been saying this for over an hour now, is that normal?
>>55978716
Install from Ubuntu minimal and download the extra packages you want. The remix/spin gui installers for Ubuntu are shit, but the minimal gui installer is great and won't hang even on the biggest shitbox
