I need some advice /g/
I decided it's time to upgrade my 7 year old pc. I work at a computer store and my boss said he's gonna build me a new pc. This is what he came up with:
FX 4320 4GHz
Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P
Corsair Vengeance Pro 2x8GB 1600Mhz DDR3 CL9
Patriot SSD Spark 256GB
Gigabyte Radeon RX 480 8GB GDDR5
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

I'm a little worried about that cpu and ddr3 memory. Personally I wanted to go for i5 6500 and GTX 960. I could use some help deciding what to get. Thanks.

Get an i3, some homo in another thread is ranting and raving about them.
>>
>>55982707
Go for the i5. The cores on the FX are way weaker than on the intels. (like less than half)

Use radioreference to find local frequencies. Listen to them.

NOAA weather is probably something like 162.500 in your area. Listen to that.

Now someone tell me how I can receive a frequency that's NXDN 12.5 kHz digital voice (Wide IDAS, NEXEDGE)?

host a police scanner feed for fun (will probably get jailed)
or make your own home-sized radio in situations like icecast goes down (you use icecast, right? right?)

http://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2016/08/08/thermostats-can-now-get-infected-with-ransomware-because-2016/

>If you’ve encountered ransomware before, you’re familiar with how incredibly destructive it can be. It literally holds your computer and files hostage unless you cough up a steep ransom, usually paid in Bitcoin.

>Now, it looks like ransomware is about to make the leap from computers and smartphones to Internet of Things devices.

>Andrew Tierney and Ken Munro – two UK-based researchers for IT security firm Pen Test Partners – demonstrated the world’s first ransomware for a smart thermostat earlier this week at the DefCon security conference in Las Vegas.

>The Wi-Fi enabled thermostat that the researchers targeted is basically a Linux computer. It allows the user to upload wallpapers and configuration settings through an SD card; that’s what they as a vehicle to install a malicious program onto the device. At this point, an attacker would have full control over the thermostat.

>It’s worth noting that for a device to be infected, an attacker would need physical access, or the owner would have to be tricked into infecting their own thermostat.

So, putting a fact that she is a waifu material to the side, what is the biggest thing she programmed? How much does she really know about CS?

What is your general opinion on Linda "Qt3.14" Liukas, /g/?

I have to say that I don't know what happened to me, but I also once saw technology world as a beautiful world of possibilities, but because I've been exposed to industry of corporate CRUD applications for a bit too long, where most of the time is being spent reading broken english on stackoverflow, I grew very bitter about everything tech related.

I feel jelly when I see how passionate she is, though.

IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I started a new job today and almost creamed my pants as they gave me a T540p, together with a Lenovo keyboard and mouse.

I am even more excited as my T430 is being delivered tomorrow and I was getting second thoughts about the chiclet keyboards after reading so many negative opinions on them, but I found it very comfortable to type in. I'm even more excited about it now, can't wait to give my T61 some rest.

Also, can't believe I finally started a /tpg/ thread, this day can't stop getting awesomer!

with virtual machines I am always deleting and messing with them, I don't intend to try to run more than one at a time but I need the key to let me reinstall

what if I install in bootcamp, don't like it or it takes up too much space then decide to run a vm?

would I be fucked?

How important are aesthetics and design in electronics? Do you think it matters how the device looks?

Aesthetics and design is literally everything when it comes to sell the product, the majority doesn't give a fuck about what's inside, just what it does and how it looks.

>>55982142
it's nice but not essential if it looks good. Most tech these days seems to go out of its way to look bad though.

Clock speed alone means nothing without knowing the Cycles Per Instruction.

If they are the same, the duocore is better for singlethreaded applications and the quadcore is better for multithreaded applications.

Is it worth the risk on a 150w PSU /g/?

Or should I downgrade to an A6 6400k
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Nigga get a better PSU
Even 25$ chinkshit "660w gamer extreme performance" psu's can do at least 400w
>>
You can't even get 150W PSUs

The thing about PSUs is that the wattage is dependent on the quality of the components, and any manufacturer will rate their PSU as high as is safe (or beyond in some cases) to get the most people to buy it.
In short, a PSU that's actually 150W will be made of cheap chinky garbage.

Never cheap out on a PSU. Ever.
>>
>>55981990
Nigga don't cheap out on the one component that could fuck your entire PC
