Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I have owned a Matias Clicky keyboard for a while now and while it has been amazing for typing, I recently got back into playing PC games, and using it for games gets fatiguing and annoying. Is it worth it to grab a second keyboard just for gaming, and have to juggle the two?

I need your help to fuck over a corrupt Council.

Long story short. My Email address was blocked to councillors, complaints departments and every department at a UK Council. This happened after I started contacting departments to object to a planning application. I only found out because an employee told me they had stopped receiving Emails from that address.

Anyway I made a complaint and the council stated that the Microsoft Spam filter had blocked my email address and put my emails into quarantine and then deleted them 14 days later because I used prohibited words. So I provided them with all my Email address's so they could find the prohibited words.

Months pass by and now I'm informed that the Council has contacted Microsoft to find out how my Email Address became blocked.

The reality is that I know it was blocked by Council staff because I was disrupting a planning application.

So /g please help me by providing me with information about the Microsoft spam filter and how plausible or inplausible there excuse is?

Your help could very well bring down a Council.

>>

Yep, a senior head of a department stated 'Microsoft Spam filter' and prohibited words. Now they're stuck in this lie and are trying to find a way out.

I need technical information about how the spam filter. How easy is it to add somebody, the procedure, etc.

Any technical information that would help.

What does /g/ think of the Solus Project?
Looks like a nice distro imo, ships with their own budgie desktop, pic related.

even though the software choice isn't as large as ubuntu or fedora, you think it's a good choice for a lightweight desktop OS?

It has everything I need.

>VLC for multimedia
>libre office for word processing
>chrome, opera, vivaldi, or midori for web browsing

It's also built up from scratch, not based on ubuntu or red hat or any other distro, which is nice to see imo.

While I do like the fact we are seeing new distros, I love the Budgie desktop. I might run it on Debian or Ubuntu because I am a cuck
>>
>>55975228
you can install it on ubuntu, or install the ubuntu budgie remix which is just ubuntu with budgie installed from scratch.

I'm just curious if it's lighter than ubuntu as well, because I was thinking of installing it on ubuntu too.

tried budgie on my fedora mate laptop and it kept crashing unfortunately

I just made my 1920x1080 60hz monitor run at 1920x1440 which I never thought of doing before. Does this damage the panel or can I use this as a boost to 4:3 usage?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>55975018
That just makes the picture look worse because it's compressing it vertically
>>
>>55975042
If you mean it's being downsampled looking like a bilinear filtering, I'm fine with that because I'm just trying to record a 1440p 4:3 video. But I'm worried it's damaging the panel if I keep using it. Then again, my default mode is pushing 75hz when it's not supposed to and it has been fine. Just want to know if pushing vertical resolution capabilities will damage the panel.
>>
>>55975018
Your monitor will be fine, I can run 1920x1080 on my 1360x768 TV. It looks terrible, but it can't damage the TV in any way

I want to build a gaming PC, and my budget will be anywhere from $300-$1200 assuming my budget is $850, what's the best full build (including case, power supply, etc. not talking about just a GPU and memory card. Thanks.

With that kinda money you could buy an intel i5 K model along with a custom fan, check out the hyper 212 evo. AMD are releasing their Zen processors later on this year if you want to wait for those. New graphics cards were released recently, do you like AMD or Nvidia? RX 480 is the best you can get from AMD, and it's at a rather cheap price. I'm not sure what the nvidia equivalent is, maybe 1070 or 1060.

Case/motherboard/ram depends on your preferences, do you want to run loads of programs at once? want to have lots of PCI/SATA slots? full tower or small case? It's up to you. read the wiki for recommendations on power supplies and peripherals:

https://wiki.installgentoo.com
>>
>>55974950
Don't listen to that fagg above me. 212 evo is a meme and you can buy much better coolers in that price range. Your options for a CPU are Intel i5s or maybe Zen chips later on this year. GPUs are RX480 from AMD - cheap and good in DX12/Vulkan, 1060 from Nvidia - more expensive but slightly faster and runs cooler than AMD. There are no mid or high tier AMD cards yet so if you need more performance your only options are 1070 or 1080. Buy an SSD.
That's pretty much all I had to say, now go to logicalincrements.com and pick your build by price.
>>
>>55975577
you can get a 212 for $20 with a rebate every so often on newegg, that's pretty damn good.

the only reason to get that m.2 drive ever is if you're using an itx board and want to make your system as small as possible, either step up to the 950 pro, or get a normal sata ssd, it'll save you money
>>
>>55974828

Are you talking the mobo or SSD?
>>
>>55974845
the ssd, and they make a 1TB version of it, m.2 is for small systems or for performance without using a pci-e slot

since you're going to be using an atx board there is no reason to get a sata over m.2 interface(the 850 evo m.2) ssd, if you were going with a pci-e over m.2 interface(the 950 pro) ssd it would make sense

you're just paying more for a formfactor you don't need, since you won't get any of the benefits of the m.2 slot other than size, since you'll still be limited to sata speeds, and not the pci-e x4 limitation of 32gb/second of most of the m.2 slots are capable of, so why pay more for the same speed in a different formfactor?

dotNET developer here. Have a very young guy sitting behind me who wants to be a developer. He has a pretty big sense of entitlement, often complaining about his salary and how he should have been hired as a developer rather than a business analyst.

He has started asking me the classic "gotcha" questions all the time. Like, "what's the difference between async and multithreading", "what are the differences between jQuery 1.9 and 3.0". At first I thought he was just being inquisitive, but it quickly become clear he just looked up the answers and is only asking me because he wants to see me give the wrong answer. He also made some jabs about me having an IT degree when he has a CS degree, and how we should trade jobs.

I have seen this many times before though, these kinds of smug and degrading attitudes among developers. So many seem to get off on making other developers look stupid.

How do you deal with this?
