Can you play pic related on a 64 bit system?
When I insert the disk it says it only works on a 32 bit but I've seen at least two youtube videos that just install it by using commands directly in DOSBox but it doesn't seem to work for me.
One video the guy uses " " quotation marks but for whatever reason, my version of DOSbox doesn't allow me to type them (press the key, but they don't show on screen).
Fucking hell, I knew I should've picked up the original collection when it was on Steam/GOG.

Source ports.

Since Interplay a shit currently, and GOG doesn't have them, I'll drop you a link.

Use DXX-Rebirth.
So now Retronauts has been split into two. Thoughts?
Also retro podcast thread
I like Retronauts when they care to do a game justice but too many times lately it's been Jeremy/Bob having little to no interest in the topic of the episode but forcing themselves to talk about it to a usually enthusiastic guest that just wants to the host to give a shit. I'm glad they're expanding and making enough money to live off now but I can only see more episodes like I described happening now there's going to be twice as much. Just feels like their personal preferences have dried up and we're stuck with fan requests or whatever.
bob mackey injecting his social political comentary needs to stop. i get it bob. you graduated college. its almost unlistenable.
Pixelated Audio and Retro Game Audio are the best.
Medievil thread?
I've beat the first game without grabbing a chalice but I've never made it past that carnival level in the second. I'm gonna fire up that game when I get a chance and finally beat the fucker. Also I remember when I first searched for a medievil speed run on YouTube and was really disappointed when they just glitched through most of the game.
Why? How can you say you beat the game if you used the equivalent of a level skip cheat to skip half the game?
>>3784232
I'm at Crystal Caverns on the first one. End game should surely be soon. It's been great fun and I've gotten every chalice thus far. One of my favorite games of all time probably.
>>3784232
I prefer the psp version
Can we have a controversial /vr/ opinions thread?
I'll start off:
>Unreal Tournament was legitimately the best FPS ever released at its launch.
>Super Mario 64 is horribly overrated and I've never found it to be at all good, even back at release.
>The Dreamcast was, also, legitimately a better console than the N64 in terms of its library.
>SNK were the best video game developers of the 90s, and only Capcom came close to them
>Tekken and KoF were consistently better than Street Fighter, with the sole exception of Third Strike which managed to stand on par with their better entries.
>While I advocate continuing to refuse to allow 6th generation consoles and post-2000 videogames on the board I'd not mind if we let the GBA slip on at some point.
>Contra is better than Metal Slug
Atari were kings of the arcade and Namco never came close
>The SNES is overrated, besides RPGs and Platformers it has nothing but a handful of worthwhile games.
>Capcom were always kings of fighting games through the 80s and 90s but Tekken 3 and KoF 98 shit on every SF game short of Third Strike.
>Most famous PS1 JRPGs aren't even worth playing because of their heinously terrible localisations
kojima games are all shit and the worst things konami has ever published
/vr/ should be renamed to /v20/ for "20th century vidya" to avoid all the stupid arguments about the word retro
when exactly did "retro gaming" go from being a poor person's only way to game to insanely expensive hobby? I remember being made fun of because I was so poor that I could only afford old games from the flea market. now i can't afford the flea market. fml
Because back then they weren't retro they were just old. I'm sure you could find a ps2 with a huge stack of bad games with one or two decent ones for $30.
>>3783271
Emulators are free. It still is a poor person's hobby.
>>3783271
same, ive got an old netbook and thats it, the only games itll play are like pre-2004 so emulators and some source ports are the only way for me to game
> except it wont play anything with shader language garbage
> so it wont play PS2 emulator
Why hasn't anyone just made an FPGA emulator box that comes in a nice console-inspired housing with a bunch of flash memory that you can use to just load up with a bunch of roms to play on multiple game systems?
I understand that FPGA computers already exist and can do exactly that, but these are very niche products for the most part and aren't targeted specifically at the gaming market. Why not just release a console with no cartridge slot and the ability to play whatever ROMs you want to dump onto it right out of the box instead of some half-baked Android emulator machine that needs to dump ROMs from real cartridges like the Retron 5? It could also have USB ports so you can bind whatever controllers you want to it.

Some very brave and dedicated people tried. Their hard work was killed before it had a chance to shine due to modern "collector" elitism.
>>3782416
They do sell some of these things though. In stores near me they're selling a Sega Genesis box preloaded with an amazing 50 games for like 50-60 euros. This is the same thing, only you can't change what's on the flash cart.
I think that the issue is that people (particularly hipster normies) don't want to put too much work into it. They like a machine that works out of the box and immediately does what it needs to do, which is either playing preloaded games or accepting their 'vintage' $200 Earthbound (mint condition) cart.
They don't want to spend time looking for roms, it's too daunting even if a simple google search gets you a direct link to the rom on emuparadise.
And those people who *are* prepared to look for ROMs are also less afraid to buy a Raspberry Pi they need to configure (they're used to configuring emulators anyways) or something like a PSP that they'd need to install custom firware on.
Allow me to explain how my Jaguar Disc to Cartridge Converter work. At a young age my father taught me the ins 'n outs of a sauldering iron and circuit boards. I got into electronics at a rather young age being the inquisitive game that I was. We owned every console of the time along with a hearty collection of games. So...
It occurred to me that it would be a lot easier if I could make one console work with all the others. The wires back then! Switches! Plugs! Gadzooks! So much work to go from console to console.
I was 8 at the time I read magazine on computers had an article about the power of each console on the market. It stunned me how powerful it listed the Atari Jaguar as being, even saying it could rival the dreamers at some clips. The hardware was insane. So the idea hit me-- this is the ultimate dream machine! Suddenly a console with a small library of good titles would become a central hub for any game made between 1991 and 1998!
The Jag Conversion tool was crafted by me alone. My father helped with the plastics assemblage but the circulating and spinners in it are all me. What it does is has a slot that has varying grooves for cartridges that can take SNES, Genesis, heck you name it if it took cartridges it could be inserted into this slot! The real clincher was the CD slot. The laser used to read the disc was taken from a PS1 and reconstituted for my conversion purposes. It also converted the digital output to be compatible with the Jag. The device actually tricks the jaguar into thinking the CD is a cartridge. It works by relaying the sign of a cartridge/disc with hardware taken from its original console so that the Jaguar is capable of emulating it. It isn't emulation for sure, because in the process what happens goes beyond emulation, it becomes a new game, one that could only be played on the power of the Jaugar as opposed to weaker sister consoles at the time.
This sucker took me 5 months to construct. Any of you do something similar as kids?
>>3782140
In the image Exhibit A is the Atari Jaguar.
Exhibit B is my conversion device.
>>3782140
I wish I had known a kid like you growing up. That's so freaking cool.
>>3782140
No not me. I didn't know the first thing about computers as a kid. Just a dumb kid who lived to wipe the snot out of cyberdemons in DOOM and Diablo loot. I wish I knew though. That thing you made looks cool.
>buy game on eBay for 20+ dollars
>still has a $2.99 goodwill sticker on it
>buy game on eBay for 3 dollars
>still has $49.99 gamestop sticker on it
>>3781743
Caveat emptor m8.
I can understand wanting to leave a sticker on if you found some rare game in the wild for next to nothing, but what decent seller would basically want someone to know how much of a markup they made? Also what decent seller doesn't remove all stickers and try to make the cart look as good as possible?
So the NES Classic has now been hacked so you can flash almost the entire US back catalog (with a few exceptions) into the memory at once.
Has anyone had any experience with this?
No because I'm not buying one second hand from a bunch of scalpers
The cord for the controller is literally like 2 feet long. You are better off emulating or buying the actual console. Hell there is even more options for this.
Don't buy this piece of crap.
I'm waiting for the software to mature a little before going for it with mine. Pretty rad.
Like most people I missed out completely on this console. In fact I never even knew it existed for a long time.
So is this console good? I find it odd how the pause button is on the console itself. It seems very counterproductive. The d-pad also seems a bit strange. Besides that it basically looks like the Sega version of an NES.
Tell me more about this console and its games as well as your thoughts on it /vr/. What are your favorite games on the Master System?

Alex Kidd was based, a bit too easy once you know all the secrets though.
Wonderboy 2 and 3 are good.
Sonic was good, different to Genesis.
I love the 8 bit version of MD games

I wonder, what are must-plays for machines of the past?
I know 8-bit and 16-bit machines share very many games, I'd want to know what platform is the best for one or another game.
Is C64 the greatest 8-bit PC?
Do people use them nowadays aside games?
What every platform is the best for?
>>3777289
>Do people use them nowadays aside games?
http://hothardware.com/news/battered-but-not-beaten-commodore-c64-survives-over-25-years-balancing-drive-shafts-in-auto-repair-shop
>>3777324
To think a smartphone is tens of thousands times more powerful yet the average amount of useful productive work most people use it for is less than of that humble old in an auto repair shop in Poland...
The C64 offered a well rounded package at an attractive price point.
Calling something the greatest is a too subjective matter.
The Japs also had nice 8 bit computers in form of the X1 Turbo Z, FM-77AV and PC-8801 MC.
What platform is best for a game is best decided on a game to game basis. What you can do is simply play each version for a few minutes to see what suits you the most.

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

That's 4:3 mode apparently, setting it to 16:9 squashes the image even more.

Post games that come as close to perfection as possible.

ALTTP is the only /vr/ game I can think of, aside from the graphics being pretty ugly, I have n complaints about ALTTP, but I could think of loads of other complaints about other /vr/ games.
