I wonder, what are must-plays for machines of the past?
I know 8-bit and 16-bit machines share very many games, I'd want to know what platform is the best for one or another game.
Is C64 the greatest 8-bit PC?
Do people use them nowadays aside games?
What every platform is the best for?

http://hothardware.com/news/battered-but-not-beaten-commodore-c64-survives-over-25-years-balancing-drive-shafts-in-auto-repair-shop
>>

To think a smartphone is tens of thousands times more powerful yet the average amount of useful productive work most people use it for is less than of that humble old in an auto repair shop in Poland...
>>
The C64 offered a well rounded package at an attractive price point.
Calling something the greatest is a too subjective matter.
The Japs also had nice 8 bit computers in form of the X1 Turbo Z, FM-77AV and PC-8801 MC.

What platform is best for a game is best decided on a game to game basis. What you can do is simply play each version for a few minutes to see what suits you the most.

>Is C64 the greatest 8-bit PC?
No, it has good games but it's an overrated computer. Like >>3777942 said there are quite a few 8-bit computers with better capabilities.
>Do people use them nowadays aside games?
There are cases of businesses still using really old computers for their tasks yes -- some musicians and small recording studios still use Atari ST or Falcon computers for example.

Yet it seems to be the only computer to win over IBM PC for a long time.

Without NEC the image doesn't say much.

Being the best != selling more
The C64 was the cheapest computer around in the US and was sold in many store chains and many of them were sold at a discount price because Commodore had a campaign where they're sell their C64 cheaper if you exchanged it with your Atari 2600 console. In the UK is was really cheap too and became quite popular too. With all of this, it's normal to see that it sold more than IBMs and clones (what the graph don't show is that a huge part of the "IBM PC share" isn't made of actual IBM machine but clones -- the huge increase in market share between 83 and 85 correspond exactly to the period when clones startd to flood the market).
>>
>>3778095
What happened between 91 and 93 that saw the Mac more than double its share while IBM's had their only notable drop?
>>
>>3777289
>Is C64 the greatest 8-bit PC?

One of the best at least. You can't go wrong with it.

It's up to debate which computer X has the best version of game Y. Maybe you just get used with a single computer of your choice.

>what the graph don't show is that a huge part of the "IBM PC share" isn't made of actual IBM machine but clones
Isn't it universally considered that IBM PC states for IBM PC-compatible machines?
>>
>>3779618
No, they alway added "& Compatibles" on products supposed to run on clones too. By the early/mid 90s when IBM lost their own architecture to clone manufacturers and when most other microcomputer architectures disappeared they stopped calling them IBM PCs altogether and just called them PCs. But no, IBM PCs alone alway refered to actual IBM machines, and when clones actually became important too they added the "& Compatibles", they didn't simply use "IBM PCs" to incorporate them too.

Are modern MSX clones worth checking out or it's better to buy an old MSX?

How would you rank these computers?

Atari 8-Bit computer, Acorn Archimedes, Amiga, Commodore 64, Atari ST, MSX2, Sharp X1, Sharp X68000, Fujitsu FM-7, PC-98, PC-88

In terms of Audio capabilities, Graphical capabilities and game library?
>>
>>3780494
I didn't know modern msx clones exist. Do you have any link?
>>
>>3784534
>that 3" floppy
So the CPC and PCW weren't the only ones using those. Good to know.
>>3784686
Make some research for yourself for once and check the specs and game libraries of these machines.
>>
>>3784686
Separate early computers (mainly 8-bit) and late computers (mainly 16-bit).
>>
>>3786285
>>3787031
Beter question then: Besides MSX Commodore 64, Amiga, Sharp X68000 and the Atari 8bit do the other computers have a decent or good library?
>>
>>3787032
PC-98 has a great library. Think IBM-DOS plus its own unique titles.
PC-88 is good but you'll find plenty of its games on other platforms.
X1 is decent but not as good as PC-88.
FM-7 isn't terrible but it's dwarfed by X1, PC-88
>>
>>3787071
How much of the liberalizes (in percent) of those computers are ported over to the computers I mentioned in my previous post?
>>
>>3787163
PC-98 to x68k make up like 90% of the x68k's library but they only account for 10% of the PC-98's library.
There's a few PC-88 to X68k ports but I think less than 10% of the total. Same for X1 and FM-7.

PC88 to MSX might be 20%. Could be higher for X1 and FM7 since their libraries are smaller.
PC98 to MSX isn't going to amount to much.

Ports to non-Japanese computers are practically negligible save for IBMs.
>>
>>3787194
Thanks that helps.

how do I even get PC-98

Have you tried Yahoo Auctions?
Are you sure you want one?
>>
>>3787609
Don't spoonfeed him. If he really wanted to get one he'd do researches on his own.
