i'm looking for some assistance with modding the wii i just purchased for 28 bucks. im no stranger to softmodding as a concept, so im just looking for a quick crash course, and i figured someone on /vr/ could probably break it down the quickest, or direct me to a definitive and simplified guide. i just want to get the wii setup to start running wii and gamecube backups, the rest i can get into later on my own

Hey /vr/, so for the most part, I've had zero issues with my Everdrive N8, but for whatever reason, Mickey Mousecapade has some graphical bugs here and there and even freezes sometimes. I've played easily hundreds of games on this N8 and never had this issue, but for whatever reason, it doesn't like that game. Have the same problem with the J version of the game as well. Anyone else experienced this, or willing to test it with their N8?

Is it an official everdrive or a chink clone?

My chink everdrive has issues like that with one or two games. I have no idea what causes it, but I'm not sure it can be fixed, since the firmware can't be updated. If it's an official everdrive, try updating the firmware.

If that doesn't work, you may be stuck with emulation, unfortunately. On the plus side, it doesn't seem like it happens with many games.

I can't test that game on my everdrive at the moment, but I will once I get home.
>>
>>3799605
It's a chink clone, so yeah, that very well could be it. I just ordered an actual cart of the game. I own quite a few carts anyways, and this one was only 5 bucks, so eh, no big loss or anything. Just found it to be pretty weird. Would really appreciate if you tested it though!

I have the official fc n8. Just tested MM from the no intro set...works fine. Try another rom...or 100...some of them can be wonky

Where's the translation? It's been "coming soon" for 5 years now!

What are some things in games from your childhood that you thought were cool tips or secrets, and possibly spent hours trying to figure out, but turned out to be hot nothing?

Pic related. If it was just in the game, I would have assumed it was just for a laugh, the manual claimed it was "not very useful in MOST situations", which made me think it had some super-awesome secret use, and I spend forever trying to figure it out. Good one, Shiny.

So many Ocarina of Time fake secrets.
I remember being like 13 when it came out.
Didn't have internet at home yet; went to work with dad at his graveyard shift.
No one in the office and I could use the PC to myself.
Searched for Zelda secrets.
Tried so many of them, one including bombing the Sheikah stone and hitting them when they turn red so they freeze that way.
Tip said to turn every Sheikah stone red and you can get to the Triforce.
mfw this wasn't even the hardest fake rumor I tried.
mfw trying these fake rumors led to me liking the game even more by having these crazy side adventures in the game.
mfw I love vidya.

Amen to that, brother.

Ocarina of Time also had this one underground pit, and in the pit there was a little pond, and at the bottom of that pond was a bunch of rupees in the shape of an arrow pointing to the wall. I can't find any pictures of it, and I don't remember which pit it was exactly, but god damn. GOD DAMN, what a tease.

Post your favorite game for the saturn and give an explanation why! What do you like about it? Is it the music, mechanics, levels, characters, story, everything? Give some good details, think of it like a pitch for your favorites. Try to keep it to one per post!

hard to say, lots of weird decisions across all regions, many of them by SoA are particularly hard to justify.

It's hard to say there's a bad game in the Panzer Dragoon series, except if you're really reaching for the odd ones like the R-Zone game. The original has the most iconic music and iconic levels with some very simple and focused mechanics and design. Love how the challenge builds up very steadily as you progress, with the first stage essentially being a casual flight, the second stage being a frantic effort to maximize kills and dodge sand worms, and everything from then on a hectic, cramped, and tense experience where new challenges are constantly created.

I've been a saturn owner for 4 days. I burned a copy of what I'm pretty sure is every single shmup released for the system. Something like 50 games. At least 80% of them are fucking kick ass, I was really surprised at just how few of them seemed like shovel ware. I've spent all weekend just checking the discs and playing each game for a minute just to get a general impression before moving onto the next. It's taken all weekend because most of them are compelling enough to want to burn through at least a credit on despite the fact that I had so many games to test.

Twinklestar Sprites is awesome, but I kind of like the dreamcast version a little better just because I'm more familiar with it.

Die Hard Arcade is rad, tons of fun revisiting it since it used to be a staple of going to the local pizza place for me when I was younger.

I really like Darius Gaiden. I thought it was a little plain jane and average at first, and maybe it is in all fairness, but it's fun as fuck with a ton of branching paths.

I'm assuming the Strikers 1945 games are sequels or spinoffs of 1942-3 even though they aren't made my Capcom. Had a blast with them.

There's a shmup where you control a tank that's really cool too. Guardian Heroes I think (the title definitely started with a G). You control your turret with A and C and fire with B, gotta use your fingers to tap the buttons instead of your thumbs (like how you'd use arcade buttons) or else the controls are awkward

I'd never played through Parodius games before. Gradius sort of pisses me off with its power up system and how you're pretty much cucked if you die once. The Parodius games are like a hybrid between Salamander and Gradius, you still have to collect the generic power up tokens but the game automatically upgrades your ship for you. These games are Japanese af though. I have absolutely no idea why someone would think a fairly no-frills shmup series was in need of satirization. But the games are solid.

This is really horrendous to look at. Same with the Darkstalkers 3 port. The Sega Saturn was of course vastly superior as far as presenting these games accurately. What gives? What technologically-speaking was holding the PS1 back from making these kinds of games look better?

I believe the saturn was on-par with this, actually.

That is, of course, unless you had the RAM cartridge. Then you got all of the frames for your fighting games.
>>
>Muh RAM

Metal Slug never ran well in the first place
>>
>>3794094
PSX had too little memory to do 2d games, and had no specific 2d tilemapper to make porting easy (most 2d games used tilemapping hardware, which allowed them to make bigger levels with way less memory, and to do a lot of scanline-based special effects - mode 7 being the most popular example).

>>3794107
Saturn Metal Slug had twice as much animation and no level loading, thanks partially to it using the 1mb RAM cart, and mostly because it had a dedicated tilemapper background chip which offloaded a shit ton of processing from the sprite processor.

Best shmups of all time thread.

I put a few hours into Suikoden and at the moment trying to get the alchemist so he can create potions so my characters can resist the pollen that is emitting from the flowers at one of the forts.

I keep hearing great things about this series, but so far I haven't seen anything that really wowed me. A lot of the mechanics are bare bones, standard leveling and experience point system with auto-allocation of stats when your characters level up. The battles I mostly just end up mashing X to accept commands due to the fact you only seem to gain skills from equipped runes and even then the magic pool is very small for them while doing standard attacks seems to suffice most of the time anyway. There is very little customization so far outside of shard and rune equips, I can't even switch out weapons and I am on the path of only upgrading their single weapon.

Does anything open up mechanically later on that makes it interesting? It isn't a terrible game or anything, it is just solid. Not very offensive but not very gripping to me due to that.

Aside from collecting more characters to perform combo attacks that's about it. That and finding more runes. And a barebones tbs minigame
>>
>>3799980
I am guessing those combo attacks are the unity attacks that I have seen a few times. I assume that you can perform them with characters that have some sort of story relation to one another.

Is the second game very similar mechanically, or are there other aspects to the battle mechanics, character customization, and so on?
>>
>>3799998
Second game has same graphics, UI, basic mechanics, etc. Just has a better story and characters. And it's longer
