Hey /diy/

Buddy and I just about finished the install of the new shiplap for his island.

Got some cheap LEDs too for a teat run for lighting. How'd we do?

So I made this table top for my father for his birthday. He's from England but has now spent more than half of his life here hence the gift. I didn't come up with the idea. Saw it on a t-shirt. Thought it would make a cool table. I messed up the miters and now I'm trying to hide them. I thought some metal corner guards would actually be nice. I've looked in every brick and mortar craft and box store and can't find something that will cover it. Looked online with no success. Some close but nothing perfect. Table is 1" 5/8 thick fyi. I put a temporary one on that doesn't quite fit just to see what it might look like. Any ideas of how to remedy this or to let me know of a site that does hardware like this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Here's the problem
>>
Leather wrap the whole perimeter, use decorative furniture tacks.
>>
Interesting idea. I used oak slats. I was hoping to showcase them. The table sides aren't finished yet. I used a bar top finish on the top and it dripped over the sides. It's a bitch to sand off. Needs some more sanding. I was going to poly the sides when it's done.

How would you go about building the legs for a drop leaf tabletop like this?

>relative bought this table
>one of the drop leafs is rough, she complained
>they sent a brand new top, told her to keep old one
>gave it to me

Its not really that nice and I dont want to spend a ton of money in wood, but I dont want it to look like ass either.

How would you go about building it?

I should say, the legs and the center column.
I do have a table saw, I do not have a lathe
>>
>>1218470
Why not just a regular table base with four legs.
Not sure, but you could also look at the home improvement stores for decorative pilasters. Usually those are 2" but they do make ones for fancy staircases etc.
Also, good reason to buy more tools.
>>
>>1218534
Im not sure why I hadnt even thought of that.
Just was really caught up in building it like the original.

I could probably make some normal square looking legs

I want to design a miniature helmet and armor set and 3D print it. But I'd like the model to be about 3 feet tall. I've never 3D printed anything and I've only just started with 3D modeling. Been using Cinema 4D for the time being.

Here are some questions:

1. Is C4D a good program for modeling characters and preparing them for 3D print? Or should I be looking at AutoCAD or Zbrush?

2. What is a great home 3D printer that can print something that large? The largest piece is just over 30 inches. Would you know of a good one to buy?

3. Back on software, I need to be able to build parts and possibly animate them minimally. Which is why I thought C4D was a good choice. Does C4D have 3D print capability? Is it print friendly? Or should I go with another software? Ideally, I'd like to be able to stress-test joints and parts of the model using material presets or parameters. I know I'm kind of out of my field right now, but that is what I am eventually trying to get to.

I think that is it for now. If you have questions for me, let me know.

I'll be using it to make character models, body armor, and architecture. I intend to print it out, sand/refine the print, then paint it for a finished look.

This isn't /b/.
>>
>>1218382
a printer with a build volume of at least 30 inches in one plane is massive and individual prints would take ages.

Model things, then chop them up for printing. Don't try printing a whole 3ft tall robot at once. Op top of needing a ludicrous printer you will be needing massive amounts of support layers and fill.
>>
>>1218382
I would honestly build models in whatever software you're most comfortable using - as long as it exports to .stl, anyway. You don't use modeling software to print; the .stl gets uploaded into a slicer (a separate program that turns the .stl into a series of layers).

Hello, /diy/.

It's been a bad birthday for me.
The basement of the house of my parents got flooded and took my part of the workshop, too.
By flooded, i mean, it was covered on the level of basement windows, enough to bust the electrical panel board, the freezer and the gas heater unit, as well as a ton of books, encyclopedias and practical manuals, the library. It's gone. It did really hurt.
Neighbours helped to clear the basement, thanks to them.
I have tried to repair the freezer by throwing the contents out, cleaning it with soap and blow every corner, including electronics that might have had moisture on it with pressured air (i have a compressor).
After checking its earth, isolation resistance (90MOhm) and residue current (80mA), i have tried to switch it on. I was sure the electronics were dry.
Unfortunately, i think i blew the board with the isolation test.
As i am aware that a new freezer would cost about a thousand eurobucks and i still have to repurchase the gas heater unit as well... I was thinking to use a programmable controller board.

The insurance weazeled out of paying me btw.I have to pay for all of it for myself.

Many thoughts crossed my mind after the damage that has been done. The little creek never has been fed by so many rains, since about 100 years in this place. I was on business trip as it happened - in only one hour, the creek flooded the whole street, my elderly parents couldn't do a thing.

I think this fall and most definitely next year this story will repeat itself and i want to be prepared against it. But i suppose that closing the basement windows with a plastic frame with inflatable seal edges that presses itself inside the window with water pressure won't do a thing against the flood?
I guess i will have to get a better insurance policy, but back to the damage control, where i'd like to ask your opinion:

What could be done to remove rust from the electric tools? Should i even bother with repairs?

I restore old tools. Picture related, an old Thor I just picked up today. Restoring old tools is easy as fuck. It is all wires, switches, aluminum, and steel. Get the muck off, de-rust everything, done.

Modern tools? Mixed bag. They often have plastic parts that are hard to clean (can't use solvents), electronic parts they can't deal with water, sensors that will never be right after a flood. I tried to fix a mate's drill that got left in his truck bed during a rainstorm. I had to buy a replacement trigger for him because it lost all speed control and became full speed only. Most of the other bits are easy. Motors generally just need a cleaning, all metal chucks can be fairly easily disassembled and de-rusted (Evaporust is great for that), and wires generally aren't a problem.
>>
>>1218377

old drills are cool, except that VSR really makes a difference.

why is that pic called "pneumatic"?
>>
>>1218377
Thank you for the reply.
I think i will give it a hand at disassembly tomorrow and tell how it went.

I want to make a heads up display. It's going to hook into the OBD2 etc. Anyone know of a decent projector I can use, or am I stuck using a screen/LED matrix?

>>
a cellphone screen or similar should be good enough, no need for a projector
>>
>>1218241
>no need for a projector

Then it would not be a HUD.
>>
>>1219391
Why would it not? It keeps your head up, therefore it is a head up display. If you want it focused out in front of the car get a frensel lens and find a way to mount it at its focal point.

So I want to mount power strips to the side of my desk.

How do I do that without affecting or damaging the wood?

>>
>>1217333
if you can't use the slide screw holes you'll have to find some strong double sided tape unless the sockets are pretty loose

and you'll have to test whether or not the double sided tape will damage the finish
>>
>>1217345
This, but also throw a ziptie or two around it to stop it from peeling off over time. Tape to hold the sheer weight, ties to stop the weight of the cords pulling it off.
>>
>>1217333
define damage.
screw it in? holes
stick it up? strip the finish

if you want it pristine wrap a strip of felt around the wood then use a quick clamp to hold it in place.

Hey, didn't see a thjread for it, so general woodworking shit, i guess?

i need a new desk soon, and i was thinking of using wood like this, because it looks fucking sweet, but i'm worried the bark by the edge would come loose and flake off, which would be a pain in the dick and ruin the look. is there any good way to prevent this, or is my idea doomed?
28 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>1217297
From what I understand the bark will peel as the wood shrinks but the bark doesnt. I've read that you can cut the bark off, then glue it back so it adheres better.
>>
>>1217298
hm, that could be a problem too, but i'm also concerned of it flaking off just from normal wear and tear. one thought was to basically fucking encase it in some kind of lacquer or something (unsure if it's the right term, not a native speaker) to the point where it becomes completely smooth, but that would kind of ruin the point.
>>
>>1217302
Some sort of non yellowing clear spray on epoxy should do the trick. Thin enough to keep the actual shape of the bark while sealing it.

I'm installing a new meter base and box on my power pole, I can't find any description on what to do with this little guy. I know it's for ground, but all the other photos I've seen with something similar have it connected to a bus.

How the fuck do I get rid of hard water stains in my dishwasher?

I threw some vinegar in there and ran it but it didn't work.

What do I do?
81 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>1215047
You need stronger acid than vinegar.
Muriatic acid (HCL)is safe for food appliances, You just need to work out how much to use and how concentrated it needs to be.
>>
>>1215050
>Muriatic acid
so I should be using this every time?
Or just once or twice to get the hard water out of the dishwasher?
>>
Do those dish aid things like jet dry even do anything?

It did nothing to get rid of the hard water

Not sure what to tell you, just part of it. I remember in hs I was fucking around with welding and I had some splatter burn through my shoes and right into the part in between my toes. My shop teacher didn't care about safety too much. Always brought steel toed boots from that day on.

I honestly never understood the hate. Shit pretty much never strips. The most common complaint I've seen was "but I don't have torx"
>>
>>1213661
It strips pretty easily with power tools - and bit destruction is pretty much instant when it does. To be fair robertson and philips both strip a lot more easily, but the bits hold up better when they do it so you can just keep going.
