So I'm helping my dad fix something with the plumbing, which requires removing a pipe and he wants to replace it with a PVC pipe. The pipe original pipe is copper? I'm guessing but really don't have a clue. Anyone know if this is safe or even recommend? I just feel that maybe replacing it with a copper pipe is better but I'm completely clueless to this and want to know the difference between the two. Also might it affects the winter months.

It is ok if he does it right, but they never use it in construction; it might even be illegal. Around here (NC) new construction uses PEX which can withstand freezing.

http://www.zurn.com/products/pex-cross-linked-polyethylene

It requires a special crimping tool that has to be dead on accurate to prevent leaks, but any moron plumber can do it so I'm sure your dad can too. Adapters are available to hook into other types of pipe.

Repeat after me:
PEX

Go drop under 100 on the tool and you're good to go for any non-drain plumbing.

replacing copper with plastic/pex is like giving yourself haemorrhoids.
replacing copper is simple enough but the tools are an investment.

I accidentally left a packet of bananas in my car for 5 days in 25c heat

When I returned the bananas had turned to oil largely and my car seat was covered in it.

How the fuck do I get rid of this smell, my car smells like a garbage truck

Tried upholstery cleaner.
Tried water and washing liquid
Tried a whole can of fabreeze

Any /diy/ ideas before I rip the seat out and strip the upholstery and wash the foam

I believe the small is isoamyl acetate but I can't seem to find online something that will neutralise the smell

I'm a paintee and I'm doing a parody of a Lichtenstein piece. I was wracking my brain trying to figure out a way to do Ben-Day dots that wouldn't take me fucking forever when I remembered that I'd bought a mesh screen for my car. I'd like to know where I can buy just the mesh so I can use it as a screen/mask.

If you knew anything about Lichtenstein or pop art in general you would know thats exact how he did the paintings, its just perforated film like in your pic. Just get perforated vinyl film in amazon or go to an cloth store and get perforated vinyl sheets
>>
>>1214250
Perfect, thank you. I didn't know what it was called and wasn't making any progress googling. I also couldn't find anything about his techniques, just pages and pages gushing (or the opposite) about the significance of his work.
>>
>>1214221
If you can't find the specific vinyl sheet you want you could always use screenprinting.

I want to get into welding machine repair, but I need broken machines to practice on, what are some good places to look for something like that? Not having much luck at local flea markets.

>>
What lead you into wanting to specialize in something like that?
>>
On top of that, the market for this is likely slim, if it's a welder worth having, it likely won't break
>>
>>1214176
I work in a welding supply shop and the guy I consistently deal with who fixes machines when they break is incredibly unreliable, I have to deal with it because he's actually the only certified miller\lincoln repair technician in the area and really it's more than he can do on his own. (He's had some of my customers machines for upwards of 6 months because he's so backed up). I've already asked him about coming in and offered to work for free any time I can because I just want to learn, but he's not interested. Thus, my current position.

Have any of you tried to use custom, multiple digit 7 segment dynamic displays with microcontrolers?
I want to replace control board of dead coffee machine which uses one of them. It has 4 seven segment digits, 'clock', 'timer' and colon. 4/12 legs are marked with black dots, so I assume it has 4 backplanes. Apparently all I need to do is figure out what symbol is on what backplane and find some way to get three different voltage levels from atmega .

No, never.

From what you're describing it sounds like a multiplexed LCD.

You're not going to be able to get that many voltages from an Atmega. You're going to need to step down/up whatever your source voltage is.

To control your LCD you're probably going to want to use a driver with a built in shift register. Sounds like you have 12 pins, so get something with a 12 bit shift register.
>>
>>1214162
many manufacturers make driver ics specifically for driving various numerical displays of all types you could care to name.
don't reinvent the wheel.

Hey guys, I live and own property in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I have been thinking about digging a tunnel/mineshaft to use as a fire safe storage, WW3, and nuke fallout shelter. I've been looking to get into buying old brand name shoes and refurbishing them on the cheap but most resources online seem to be shilling some product (reshoevinator).

What are some ways to fill in cracked leather? Loads of people plug this "special" leather acrylic paint called angelus paint. But apparently the stuff will peel and chip unless you seal it with another specialty product. This leads me to think that this special leather paint is no different than those bottles of paint at the craft section of the dollar store. But just to be safe what can I do to enhance the flexibility and durability of acrylic paint? I was thinking of mixing it with some rubber cement.

Also any tips on dyeing canvas shoes without dunking them into the bucket?

Any other shoes refurbishing tips?

I have no idea for white shoes but for black and tan shoes you just use shoe polish and polish them. I mean, that is kind of what it is made for. It protects the shoe, fills in scuffs and cracks, and conditions the shoe to keep it flexible.
>>
>>1214006

I'm talking out my ass right now, but i believe I've seen white shoe polish before.
>>
>>1213976
Try gesso. It's made for priming canvases and is stickier than ordinary paint. It also stays slightly more flexible than regular paint over the months, not sure how long it'll stay flexible though, like all paints it'll dry out and cure more as time goes on

Hey /diy/

So I have scoliosis, which isn't a bending of the spine but rather is a twist, like a spring, of the spine from the hips up to the skull. Because x-rays are 2d, it looks bent in an s-curve.

In order to counteract a muscular imbalance in the ability of the upper torso and lower torso to twist in one direction, I created this sling brace that attaches from the right shoulder to the right glute. You take a band, wrap it around the shoulder across the upper back, diagonally across the stomach back around to the right glute.

I took this guy's exercise idea, pic related, and made it into a brace. It's definitely doing something, but my attachment point is my belt I have a buckle that I slide onto my belt by my hip. But being attached to my belt it doesn't activate my right glute much, the tension gets caught on my lower left ribs and that's not ideal.

Thoughts on how to better engage my right glute? Aside from stitching the buckle into my asscheek?

my body is already broken. the guy in my post, who is regrettably not me, is a physical therapist who developed the regimen using a weight machine to do exercises to fix your very low level scoliosis.

anyway its one of those things, my body is broken and will continue to break every year. the only reason not to try to fix it is guys like you trying to shame me. waste of my time to listen to somebody who doesn't understand the realities of having a degenerative condition.

it wouldn't be plugged in, that would be fucking stupid. it will be hard wired into your house electricity.
you only needed to remove the mains power in and the battery leads. external bellbox usually has a battery too so it rings if you disconnect it.

tape is pretty shitty, if you can find the mains wire in that picture your better eyesight than i have, but cut them back so there is no exposed conductor/copper/metal and cover with a suitable rated terminal block or shielded connector.

tape is sticky and leaves sticky messes. bad way to make friends using it on wiring.

That's a 12 v battery and I don't see a transformer in that box.. it's probably got something like a doorbell transformer wired to a box somewhere in your house. Just my guess tho I don't work on alarm systems

Hey /diy/ stupid question from a not-so-handy handyman.

The apartment I live in gets bugs, and I'm about 90% sure they are coming through the windows. All of the windows in my apartment are these single-pane pieces of junk, and they all have about a quarter-inch clearing between the screen and the top of the window.

I found a dead stink bug stuck in there the other day, so that's how I know they're coming in that way. How would you guys seal this off completely?
9 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
There are also these slots that go straight outside as well, on the bottom of the screens on either side.

I tried covering the top area in duct tape, but that didn't do a whole hell of a lot.
>>
>>1212825
Ayy
I, too, have shitty windows in the room I'm renting
I just duct taped the edges of the screens all the way around to seal them
Black tape on black windows doesn't look too bad.
It's held up for about 6 months but it's starting to come off on one edge, most likely from constantly being peeled up by the sliding action of the window.
If you're cheap like me and trashy appearance isn't a problem, then it's an option.
>>
>>1212870
Also FYI my inspiration for this ghetto fix came from the fact that my boss put gorilla tape on top of the boxes on his work truck because his dog was cutting his neck/face on the metal panels. The tape is frayed but is still intact after several years of sun, wind, rain, and dog face rubbing. So I thought it would work well for a window screen where it would experience similar conditions.

Also, if you know anything about flashing (as in waterproofing) just follow the same guidelines and the tape will help keep water out.

hello /diy/ , how are you. Before reading this, let me preface you. I am not a professional, I am a hobbyist. Ok, my father was a carpenter in his spare time, and after he died, I was left with his workshop. Now after some time, and some dicking around with the tools in there, I realized that he intended to use the lathe in pic related for turning metal, since it has that 2 axis thing ( not a professional, pls no kill ). What I ask of you is what improvements can I make?
