Any blacksmiths able to give me some advice? I know there used to be a blacksmithing general but I didnt see it. I want to get a forge but everywhere I look says to build your own. I know its cheaper but it seems like a lot of work and I dont particularly enjoy messing around with flammable gasses and home made shit. If someone could recommend me a forge or convince me to build one I would appreciate it. I would mostly be using it for bladesmithing or tool making.

I'm looking to make a 12 foot drifter boat out of HDPE I'm well aware of how big a project it may be, any advice?
9 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1218925
Start with the math for how much HDPE that actually is. Are you buying all that or collecting it from bottles and caps? Do you have a good method to break up this obscene amount of material to prep for sheeting? Do you have ventilation for your oven? Do you have a spare oven you don't use for food?

Have you don't any work at all with HDPE in the past?

What would be the best and easiest way to remove this type of logo / branding on a stainless steel water bottle?
24 posts and 4 images submitted.

Does it have to be perfect looking after?
Either way, some steel wool, some water and some time would do if nothing else. Try acetone or maybe alcohol first, screenprinting inks can sometimes be dissolved even when set. If there does not seem to be a material bonded to the surface then it is likely laser etched, so back to steel wool.

If you work with finer steel wool and then polishing material you should be able to bring the finish back or at least extend the flaw into a larger area that feathers out and becomes unnoticeable.

Thanks anon, I'm gonna try that.

Hello, /diy/!

I am an arts and craftsy kind of person, and I am attempting to remake a board game (Tsuro) using wooden tiles and leather instead of cardboard tiles and cardboard board.

I have a friend willing to help out with the leather, but I'm trying to source the wooden tiles, and its actually surprisingly hard. I wanted 2"x2"x1/8" wooden tiles, but the only places I can find them are craft stores, for $1 a tile and $36 seems high for what equates to 2"x2"x4.5" of balsa wood.

Googling has not produced good results, and the best value I've found then is $30 for 50, and that is for lazer-carved stuff that has practically scorch marks on it.

Have I just drastically underestimated my costs, or am I missing where to buy?

Oh, shit, you're right, sorry. I forgot to mention I'm a penniless millenial who doesn't own a big saw or even have the space for one.

I mean fuck, I'd just pay the $40 for the wood if I had fucking power tools.

clueless as well,

Looks like a old maybe not military but precision high grade radio.

Would like to build a diy TV stand for a 50" tv. A lot of the plans I find online want me to have 3 power saws and shit. I have a power drill and a power driver. No saws at all so Lowe's will have to cut the lumber for me. I like chunky stuff like pic related but I just need a normal thing with 4 legs. Any good plans out there?

>>
Do you have a sander? Clamps?

If so, simply clamp and glue a bunch of 2x3's together to make a chunky top, sand them smooth, and use black iron pipe for legs.

The poor bastard at the hardware store can cut and thread the pipe for you too.

Spend the money on some tools.
Cheap shit will work for a few projects. Figure out what you want, what tools you use the most. Then upgrade to something better.

My jigsaw and palm sander are both harbor-freight specials. Cheap as fuck. They've worked for a couple projects now.
Had a HFT circ saw. It got me through a few projects. Upgraded to a cordless system.

Tools pay for themselves pretty quick.

Any reason you can't wall-mount the TV?

They don't. They are intended to be run with lubricant in the cooling fluid. Without that they eventually overheat and die. I'm sure some brands may fair better than others.

Hey /diy/, I chipped this tile in my kitchen after dropping a glass, how can I fix it?

I was thinking of using some epoxy to fill the void and then scraping it flat.
I would need to add some kind of colorant to the epoxy to match the color of the tile, I have some Tamiya acrylic paint laying around, can I mix it with the epoxy before applying?

Any other ideas?

>>

the right way to fix it is remove the grout, pull the tile, replace the tile, re-grout, seal.

Nail polish will hide it, at least temporarily.

Hey /diy/, I found my old sax during an in-depth storage cleabing last week.

Thing hasn't been taken care of for over 15 years, any tips on what should I do to bring it back to 100? It was left inside its case, so no dirt or corrotion related issues.

>>
Provided it was clean and taken care of before it was put in storage, you won't need to do much.

Swab the insides with instrument cleaner, check the cork, check the pads, replace if needed and make sure all the keys are smooth.
>>
>>1221239

>and make sure all the keys are smooth.

The keys are sticky, and pretty noisy on the oppening and cloising. What should I do?
>>
>>1221248
Drop some key oil where it's noisy and rough. Work the keys around a lot to remove the built up crud. Don't put too much on because it'll be a bitch a wipe off.

You'll want to drop it where the joints are and it can get very complicated where multiple keys join to one rod.

If the cork and/or pads need replacing, I suggest you just take it to the shop for a check up. If you only need to oil the keys, then it's find to do it yourself.

Hey here's a quick question. I purchased two 5 meter 12V LED strips off Amazon to light up a room. I soldered them together in series because I didn't want to bother with them in parallel and because I didn't care about the voltage drop along the line.

To power the light strips, I purchased a 12V 10A 120W Transformer off Amazon. My question is, will this work? I know that if I used a 12V 5A 60W transformer, it will fail prematurely. That's why, I think if I use the 10A 120W one, I will be able to power both light strips without failure. I just wanted to ask /diy/'s opinion on this.
11 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Depends on the current consumption per meter which depends on the density of the strip you've gotten. As long as it's less than 1A/m you're golden.
Curious, what are you mounting them to? I'm looking for ideas.
>>
LED strips are usually rated in Watts per meter. Say if it's 14W/m, you will need 140W power supply. Actually, you need at least 30% more capable supply (I usually go for double when I do installations for clients) this makes 180W supply.

Also, do bother powering them in parallel, as the end of 10m strip will be lame ass dim. At least power them from both ends.

These are the ones I picked up from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01339FVZS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

What I did was buy a bunch of L-shaped molding from Home Depot at like 96 cents a foot and attached the lights to them. Then I attached it to the wall about 3 inches from the ceiling. It provides a lot of light in a previously very dark room.

ok so i know this might be a dumb question but here go's

lets say i have 1 servo that has a torque lift of 1 kg and i want to be
able to lift something that is 2 kg if i had 2 of the same servo would i be able to lift 2 kg

Yes.
>>
>>1220980
sorry if this sounds dumb but how if the same servo can only lift 1 kg of its weight wouldn't it fail and brake
>>
>>1220988
lets say I have two 1lb blocks.
I have servos that can lift 1lb but not two.
I can definitely lift one block at a time.
I can definitely lift two blocks next to each other with two servos.
If I tape (read: weld) the blocks together, nothing has changed. It can still be lifted with 2 servos.
