Ignore the b8. There's nothing wrong with using real-world analogues for your in-universe civs, though you should at least try to spice it up with some original concepts and cultural practices and maybe not directly cut-and-paste names and stuff from real places. There's generally like 2 problems with using real civs for your in-universe civs: 1) it can create this weird patchwork effect where it's like you have the Cambodian Elves next to the Scottish Goblins, the Finnish Orcs, and the Indian Dwarves. You suddenly have a region where 4 entirely different cultures coexist, despite the fact that cultural interchange should have led to at least some kind of basic similarity over thousands of years. 2) it can lead to this weird effect where every nonhuman race is assigned a single monolithic culture.

Oh, and also, a lot of GMs try to pick "exotic" cultures to be "original" without doing their research. It's like a cultural version of the "MY elves are photosynthesizing tree-people w/ 4 arms who reproduce asexually!" thing that lots of newbie worldbuilders seem to go through.
>>
>>50111560
>Why is this a thing?

It's not really. The opinion seems to be "if you just lift a culture wholesale it's lazy writing."

>Have you encountered this conviction in any of your players?

Nope.

>Why did they hold it?

They didn't because they're not /tg/-tier armchair hobbyists.

We've had plenty of steampunk threads, many cyberpunk threads and more than a few Dieselpunk threads, but what about a Biopunk thread?

What would a civilization like that look like, especially if it was a space faring one? Would it be more a blend of Cyberpunk and Biopunk?

For FNM the past few weeks, I have been running blue/white harmonicon control. The meta where I play is split about half and half white/black control and red/something aggro.
The Harmonicon deck shuts control right out: Tonight I took out two different decks AFTER they emblemed Lilianna, but I lost in the final round to pummeler aggro.

Has anyone got any advice about things to add to this type of deck to make it more stable against copters, pummlers, and swing-wide dwarf/vehicle strategies?

>>50110863
I'm running Panharmonicon in my Aetherflux Reservoir deck, and I have a lot of trouble with control and less trouble with aggro. Depending on what you're already running (Prophetic Prisms, Metalspinners puzzleknots, Foundry Inspector and Paradoxical Outcome are what really make the deck work), you might be able to side a couple of Reservoirs in.
>>
>>50112681
Also, post list, that'll help
>>
MTG Goldfish showed off a 5 color panharmonicon list. It had a play-set of radiant flames in the sideboard. The deck did really well, with the exception of going against pummeler. That list makes a bit of energy

I'd try Consulate Surveillance against pummeler. I don't expect it to work, but I don't see any harm in testing it out.

What would happen if the Imperium found a STC? Even if it had half the complete data?

The Admech would get their shit together.
>>
>>50110849
An intact, non-corrupted STC? The entire Admech collectively orgasms at the largest and most valuable DAOT artifact in the Imperium's history, before calling in every favor they have and committing literally every available asset they own to it's retrieval and protection. The Imperium's tech advances in leaps and bounds as millennia's worth of knowledge and designs are decoded from it's database. The Imperium gains a huge boost in power from all this new tech. Perhaps enough to finally halt it's slow slide into the grave, or even to start pushing back against it's various enemies. Suffice to say it would be a massive shift in the balance of power.
>>
>>50110849
AdMech do everything they can to capture the STC and it is either stolen like the one with medical data and dark eldar, or it is stored in mars and they just won't share

So I just forked out 15 Freedumbux for the latest RPG Humblebundle on a whim though I'm not really sure what I'm in for. Atomic Robo sounds cool and I've heard some Anons saying the SOIAF RPG isn't great but the others are unknown to me. Is Mistborn and Dresden Files any good or will I need to read the books to 'get' it?

So you don't need to go to the site, the bundle is such:

>A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying Core Rulebook, The Atomic Robo RPG,andLaundry RPG Rulebook.

>Mistborn Adventure Game, The Dresden Files RPG: Your Story, A Song of Ice and Fire Chronicle Starter, andLaundry Files: Black Bag Jobs.

>Alloy of Law: Mistborn Campaign Setting & Game Setting, Terris: Wrought of Copper Player’s Guide & Mistborn World Resource, A Song of Ice and Fire Campaign Guide, The Dresden Files RPG: Our World, andLaundry Files: Agent's Handbook.
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>50110657
The Mistborn one doesn't require you to read the books for the basic setting, if I remember right. But the Alloy of Law one will spoil the shit out of the first trilogy just because of setting details.
>>
>>50110657
The Dresden Files books spoil a lot of details, but if you weren't planning on reading them it still serves as a good primer for what's going on and how magic works in the setting.
>>
>>50110657
so this is from someone who loves table top games like DnD, World of Darkness, and Exalted (thematically more than mechnically). heres a quick what I think:
Dresden Files - Lots of cool lore and some interesting story themed mechanics but holy fucking hell are the rest of the mechanics imbalanced as fuck. Like dear lord are spellcasters op as shit (mechanically). like we are talking 3.5 dnd bad/worse. However there are some cool ideas. Personally I found the game plays better at a low "refresh" (the games version of level) because then spell casters and monsters cant be broken as fuck and run over all the people that don't want to play those things. Source: roughly 3 campaigns and approx a year of play regularly.
Mistborn- Mistborn is a pretty rockin system that i don't really ever see anyone talk about. It has balanced spell casting (spell casters have to sacrifice other things like being rich/popular to get magic and in the setting/game it punishes you. plus magic isn't super retartedly strong, more focused one trick pony type of stuff), interesting thematic spells and powers. The combat and resolution mechanic is fun and can be exciting when you smooth and cool take down a powerful enemy in some way. The dice mechanic is a bit wierd at times though. I don't really have much to go on beyond that, just felt wierd sometimes. Source, one long sessions worth of experience

There it is. Sorry for the wall of text. if you wanna know more let me know. Here's a tldr:
Dresden files, cool story mechanics but crunchy bits are super imbalanced in the favor of spellcasters.
Mistborn has interesting magic and is fun to play but the dice seem strange at times.

D&D 3.5 has many shortcomings.

Let us discuss the tallcomings.

I, personally, am a fan of psionics, incarnum, and Tome of Battle maneuvers.

Yeah, that's a good book. Needed another copy-editing pass, though.

I really like binders from the Tome of Magic, myself. Pity the rest of the book is shit in comparison.
>>
>>50110531
The 3.5 character optimization community was amazing; the game's massive pile of well specified and often ad-hoc rules really made it a blast to work with. I haven't found a game that's as fun to tinker with since. And the community developed its own strange lore; Pun-Pun being a god, all wizards being Conjurers and Transmuters, throwing the Elemental Plane Of Earth at people, all that stuff.

The tier system the charop community eventually developed is really interesting too - a "tier 3 only" game is a strange world of mystic swordsmen, bards, various vaguely evil wizards, and Legolas can turn into a bear. Every other tier is its own strange world that nobody would have written a system for intentionally.
>>
>>50110531
I loved Incarnum. It's the only 3.5 book I own that isn't collecting dust.

I was always a fan of this interpretation, but has that ever been the canon view, or is it half-ascended fanon? I just reread the Ex3 training time blurb and the only real support I can read for it is the notion that 'many characters train their charms by exercising the Ability under duress', but just above that there's a blurb that 'neither training nor experience alone is sufficient for mastery'.

Hold on - is the model on the right there using a (presumably) spring-powered repeater 'crossbow' with a folding stock? 'Cause that's original as shit and I'm stealing the idea.

/tg/ I need pics of castaway islands, oceanic wonders and just plain cool shit in the ocean.

This will likely be used in a campaign I'll try on qst, but I'm limited on the amount of images with this stuff only one fag can gather. The ocean's a huge fucking place, full of reefs with booming and vibrant life, and below it all, the massive graveyards of the deep-sea bottom, where all marine life drifts down to settle in the deepest places.

The anons will be in control of a single shaman-like PC, and man oh man is shit going down in the oceans.

Pic related for sure.

Define Justice. You can't its just a meaningless word people use to enforce their wills and thoughts on others. The same as laws. Once you realize there is no true justice in the world you will realize you're free to make the world your own thing.

Hello, fellow fa/tg/uys. I'm in the middle of a late night writing spree and could use some helpful discussion.
I made an original setting for 5e and we are near level 20/endgame. From the beginning, the party knew something meta was going on (ominous visions, prophets of endtimes) and I've thrown in lore from different dimensions/timelines, including an astronaut npc they met. They are now finding out that all that has been leading to he PCs facing down the Evil nature of this reality.
But I'm sort of drawing a blank on how to move them to the end. The Big Bad is the Capital-G God, Creator, who is evil as shit and has fucked the world over since the dawn of time and has succeeded multiple times in wiping out life. Not really sure how DND characters can compete against that...
Should I have them fight "manifestations" or "avatars" until he's lost his power? I've set him up calling the Sun his home, and sending the corruption to earth, thus calling himself The Necrostar. Maybe something involving curing the sun?

I don't know.
TL;DR How does a lvl20 party fight an Abrahamic evil God?

I've set up the idea of paradoxes fucking with the Creator's original plans. The Astronaut found this Earth by dimension-hopping, which he discovered to actually be time-traveling. He crossed to a new dimension that happened to be exactly the same as his, but billions of years in the future.
Fucked up reality a bit. I had originally planned on the Astronaut leaving again to go back in time to make things better, only to start the events that make it so shitty, but one Charisma build PC seduced him and talked him into stay.
Another paradox. Made the Creator lose more control. Should they brainstorm up paradoxes to break reality enough to affect him?

The Necrostar communicates with the living world through a prophet NPC, who teases the PCs, but them being lawful good, haven't attacked the messenger who hasn't really done anything. I could have her become an avatar and more direct vessel of the Necrostar's power to fuck up some shit, drawing the PCs out to attack her and maybe figure out a way to hurt the Necrostar through that fight.
I did give them Irridium, small green radiated minerals that counteract the Necrostar's purple energy. But nuking the Sun would be crazy. And kind of a let down of a climax to just fly a bomb into the sun. There's no big fight involved or anything. Idk, maybe there doesn't have to be.

Several groups of clerics from different religions as well as scholars and sages have started a philosophy club that discusses the nature of reality based on what the PCs have discovered. Every time they make a break through in learning about what's really going on, they either receive a jarring vision of the doom to come, or some shit hits the fan (horde of magma zombies erupt from the volcano right next to town).
The more they understand, the angrier God gets. Maybe enlightenment would allow them to transcend physical shackles and take on the God of Gods. If they did that, what would he be like? A high level caster with special Lair abilities? Every class? A puzzle fight? Not sure if anyone's had experience with this kind of endgame.
