These are Monsoon's stats as a level 3 PC in Strike!. As a boss, he'd have less complicated mechanics but more raw power (especially more raw defense, now that I think about it).

I decided to go with a Backstabber Rogue (because he's a sneaky git) Blaster (to simulate his smoke bombs and AoE attacks) and some mobility feats.

He's actually quite scary. Has a lot of movement options and can spam attacks from hiding, and is able to deal with multiple enemies at once while controlling the battlefield with smoke-bombs and magnetic shenanigans.

I don't know why I was thinking about this, but I guess it's been irking me for a long time, becuase it's resurfaced in different forms over the years, like a damn hydra.

Do you have trouble getting your players to be proactive?

>Back in the time of peak quest shit on /tg/
>Ran a quest that explicitly wasn't waifu bait
>MC was caught up between forces much larger than himself
>Most information wasn't given to the players
>Flat out told them multiple times to come up with a theory and act on it
>Players were completely handcuffed by fear of being wrong
>Quest burns to the ground before they try anything

Look, I'm not the kind of DM/QM that's going to kill you and end everything just for doing one stupid thing (doing the same stupid thing multiple times though...), but players are still fucking scared to have anything bad happen to them.

And the kicker here is what pisses me off. As soon as I get proactive as a player, the DM enjoys it, but his sense of encounter balancing goes out the fucking window! It's like as soon as his brain switches over to "what's a realistic outcome?" I get one encounter of forty guards instead of four encounters of ten guards, like I would have gotten on his rails.

I do t know anything about quests, but I too struggle to make the players more proactive.

So far, all of my campaigns have been Be In Town > NPC gives plot hook > Go into dungeon > Kill Monsters & Get Treasure > Go back to town > NPC gives plot hook in a different town > and so on and so forth...

I don't really know how to encourage a more proactive style of play, and I feel like I'm suffocating the players under a series of adventure hooks that they can't ignore because that's obviously the content I have prepared.

I try to give the players down time or breathing room between encounters to role play or maybe decide on a different course of action - but nothing much comes of it. They're a lot more proactive during combat - however.

My dream campaign is a sandbox hexcrawl, where I just establish an engine to calculate the consequences of the players actions and prepare the sessions around it.
>>
>>50038932
The way my DM did it was that once we had the first two-three sessions following some clues of a kidnapping we found out that something big was going on... But once we returned to town we ran out of clues and thus the GM said "So, where too next?" We had no clues on how to continue so we just had to move on, no plot hooks or carrots on sticks. Just a big ol mystery and implications of impending doooooooom.
>>
start small.

When the party meet an npc, tell one of the players that their character knows this person, then get the player to tell you what their relationship is with the npc.

Give examples of BBEGs in campaigns you've played that have been immensely satisfying for the group to oppose.
They don't necessarily have to be 'evil' in the traditional sense. Hell, they could just be an opposing mercenary faction or whatever.

The point is, share what makes them compelling and makes their motivations seem real.

I'm enjoying villain of my current campaign. He is modeled in appearance after Whammu, covered in intricate tattoos that shift and move. He is a religious zealot that claims to be a conduit for fate itself. He has been showing up to harass the players, always a few steps ahead. My players are now stating to realize that his predictions are not as clear as he makes them sound, nor as accurate.

He is arrogant to the extreme, and seems to be able to form a cult of personality around himself easily. In a few months he has grown a sizable amount of followers.

My favorite moment so far was having him show up outside a meeting between the players and a wealthy patron that was going to help then find/kill him. He told the players that he was already in the process of taking their ship, but they could try and stop it if they ran now. He also told them that he has a follower about to "gift your patron a message, at the end of a blade". So they could choose to stop that. Or they could submit to him and join. Become his lieutenants, and save both the ship and the patron. They told him to fuck off and they ran to save the patron. They found him at the bar unmenaced with a note pinned to his side with a dagger shaped broach.

Oh, OP, let me tell you about how we made a deal with a FANTASTIC dragon.

Once upon a time, in sleepy Seattle, some Shadowrunners with slightly too much of a taste for collateral were embroiled in Splintered State (or at least I"m pretty sure it was Spintered State) and managed to fuck it up, triggering the optional "and here's the dragon!" encounter. This lead to us caught being between a deal with a dragon and a lot of dragon fire. Figuring we could weasel our way out of it somehow, we reluctantly agreed to Drexel's demands.

He proceeded to send us on a variety of infuriating jobs before finally setting us up to be murdered trying to fight Red Samurai. Now, for Drexel of course, this is something that started as profit and turned into fun. For us, it started as our only option and turned into a deep seated vendetta. Drexel's catch phrase of "FANTASTIC!" because the cause of twitches and gritted teeth for players to the point that any time it came up from the DM in other conversation we growled at him for it, and he wore his very best shit-eating grin.

After the attempt to merc us, Drexel continued fucking with the team until such time as he made a concerted effort to wipe us off the map. He had us captured, killed a bunch of our contacts and had the daughter of the party heavy sent to France. Once we broke ourselves out of prison (or rather, the Personafix clones of the party decker/BTL manufacturer did, a story for another time) we took a break from playing ourselves, while the DM wrote short fiction pieces about what our party did to that fucking dragon while we were 'out'. Hopefully one day I can convince him to let me share his writing in /srg/, it's really quite good, but I'll give the cliff notes.

We fucked him. We fucked him good. The aforementioned decker walked into one of Seattle's media broadcasting buildings to spread the information that the face had stolen (after playing Drexel's secretary for months) to the world. (1/?)

>Big Bad takes action
>Player Characters take action against this action

I want to reverse this process. What are some exciting ways to get players to take the wheel of a campaign and swat people getting in their way?

Basically how do you GM without a BBEG?

>>
>>50038609
Ocean's 11 springs immediately to mind. Tony Benedict was the antagonist of that, but he wasn't a BBEG by any means. He was doing his own thing, entirely above-the-board as far as we're aware (i.e., his games weren't rigged, he got his competitors out of town simply by having better/more popular casinos rather than by force, he treated his wife well, etc.), and wouldn't have been involved with Danny Ocean or any of the other thieves if not for the fact that they were acting deliberately against him for their own fun and profit.
>>
>>50038609
Give them a goal.
In order to do that, you'll need a tight-knitted party with decent backgrounds, a nice setting, and decent players.
I'd do a session 0 with brainstroming so everybody's on the same page.

Alternatively, mqke them encounter (and kill) the bbeg during the second or third session, so they can use the adventure to decide what to do next ("I really liked that village we saw, I want to become the mayor of it now that evil has ben banished"...)
>>
Let the players be murder hobos. The world will take action in response.

How does /tg/ feel about spectators who watch a game?

I have had many games where spectators have been involved generally I feel they simply act as a distraction and now opt to simply say no.
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
As a whole, most spectators only come and go for only 1 session or so.

It's hard to be involved with a game where you have no stake in it.
>>
>>50035827
I think your decision is reasonable. I've had some spectators that were fine and didn't disrupt anything, but I've had a couple that were distracting and detracted from the game. I'm fine if someone wants to sit in on a session to see whether or not they want to join, but otherwise I don't allow spectators.
>>
>>50035827
I play a bunch of games on Skype, and we've accumulated a group of about 8 or so people who hang out in the various channels. Since there's no way everyone will be in any one game, it's just normal for us to have an open invitation to join the IC channel of a game and watch.

Generally the spectators are polite enough to shut the fuck up during game time, though, so we've never had problems with distractions.

The monk'ta books that were with the damocles crusade featured them IIRC, as well as the Horus Heresy book Path of Heaven.

The White Scars feature heavily in the Damocles related novella.

What you should get is the Damocles anthology, Shape of the Hunt, Storm of Damocles, savage Scars.

None-Damocles related novels :

"The Hunt for Voldorius" & "Master of the Hunt"
