Mulling over a savage worlds setting where Bioshock's rapture lasts till 1985. Ryan "dies" in an "accident" and Fontaine Futuristics takes over. I have a bunch of ideas and wanted to shoot it past you gents. also bioshock lore thread I guess?

Basic gist is that its a fast sexier version of Rapture with more enemies and weird 1960s future stuff. Splicers begin wrecking shit even after the death of Ryan so Fontaine begins commissioning a new Adam based formula to avert the effects of splicing. The product works as intended with a few side effects, Children born of splicers inherit those same defects in a FAS inspired way. Those who stop taking their meds begin mutating faster.

New companies and areas are expanded, such as Caracas Automotion that begins building robot servants, security and maintenance. Another company idea is a think tank of biogeneticists that use adam to splice the perfect children and animals.

More like a vidya thread, but I guess it fits here too.
Seriously tough, I often read that Starcraft is just a rip-off from 40k, especially that the three main armies represent the Space Marines, Eldar, and Tyranids...
Ok, there are similarities between both series, but on the other side Starcraft is also very different from 40k.
The Terrans for example. There are actually more like the Imperial Guard then the Space Marines. The Space Marines in Starcraft are normal dudes and no enhanced supersoldiers. Mankind in Starcraft doesn't have crappy and old technology.
I don't want to say, that there are no similarities, but it is far away to be a total rip-off...

Starcraft was inspired by RT and 2e era 40k. 40k has changed a lot since then, making the comparisons a lot less obvious than they used to be.

This is mostly correct but both StarCraft and 40k also drew heavily on similar source material - StarCraft isn't necessarily dependent on 40k for inspiration, but that both owe a lot to Aliens and Starship Troopers.

Good news, because the setting's overarching villain plans to fix that unintentionally, as a consequence of her plans.
I was going to say she hates wizards, but then I realized she sort of hates anyone who uses or has used magic without her permission, which is a LOT of people.
Generally, though, when important people are killed, their enemies take extreme pains to keep them dead.

Thing is, the materials for resurrection should actually be rather rare. How common do you expect 500 gold diamonds to be? They're probably pretty sizable and hard to find.

Besides, the real best solution is to send them on a quest to revive their ally instead. Make it so the materials are hard to come by, or require things specific to their past or motives to draw them back.

There's a lot of interesting stuff you can do with it besides just having it be a flat fee.

I treat it kind of like a lazurus pit: sure, you come back, but death will always keep a peice. Somthing will be different everytime you come back. Detriment can be anything from roleplay stuff to a complete loss of a feat, ect. I don't like resurrection either and if a player wants to spam a reset button all day, he's gotta work for it. Taking a soul away from the gods is a great permission or a great insult. GM accordingly.

There is none, its standard not-Europe medieval fantasy. However, there are a bunch of other forms of entertainment, music, theater, and storytelling are the most common, with the occasional circus, fighting competition and even the occasional magic performance.

The 'big bad' monsters very rarely come close enough to land to be an issue, though there is at least one recorded instance of a large Kraken-like monster attacking a small fishing village that's independent from the rest of the Empire. Otherwise, fishermen and sailors that venture further into the ocean are more likely to be attacked by pirates than monsters, though the occasional tall tale of a crew of sailors driving off a school of mermen, a giant octopus or a sea serpent.

Not that I'm aware of, but I can give you a rundown on the ones I'm more or less familiar with:

BFRPG has attack bonus and ascending AC. It also separates race and class, and includes a sensible solution to AD&D multiclassing, allowing you to preserve the elf fighter/magic-user combo if desired. Races get a +1 to a particular ability score modifier, meaning a dwarf with 18 Constitution can have a +4 bonus rather than +3. It's all free and there's some neat rules expansions for it (also free) which include more races, more classes, expanded magic, etc. It's not a particularly slick presentation, but the bones are there for you to hang the meat onto.

Lamentations of the Flame Princess has a much slicker presentation (though some people have an issue with the art for being, in a word, gross). The skill system is superior to the Roll Under systems like secondary skills, and there's just enough skills to make it meaningful without dumping a ton of shit onto the character sheet. It has Race as Class, however. LotFP uses attack bonus and ascending AC. Fighters are the only class that continues to increase their attack bonus as they level, making them a great deal more powerful. Clerics don't have Turn Undead as a class feature - it's a spell here. LotFP also has a really good encumbrance system. Finally, the firearms appendix is great, and for me, it's one of my favorite things because my own homebrew setting is inspired partly on Le Pactes de Loups. However, despite the art and the tone of the writing, the rules themselves are no more weird than any other B/X clone. Summon Monster is a standout, but aside from that it's fairly normal D&D with a few houserules.

Labyrinth Lord (which I'm much less familiar with) has descending AC and (I'm assuming because I can't find it in the book) THAC0. All three, BFRPG, LL, and LotFP use the 5 saving throws.

Hey, I was wondering if anyone here could give me some tips to being a good dungeon master. My friends want to try out D&D or a roleplaying game of some kind and I kind of need help. I've already tracked down the majority of rulebooks, thanks to you /tg/, and I've been browsing through them.

I'm thinking of running them through the starter dungeon for 5e to just get a feel for their play styles and to have something easy for me to DM since I've never DM properly before. I'm kind of worried since one of them insists on being a necromancer style character, and to be frank I've no damn clue how to do that besides what I've seen on google on the matter. The best thing I can think of is to start them off as a level 1 mage of some kind.

That being said, please give me some advice on dos and don'ts. I've watched a few videos, like Projared's D&D series, on Youtube and a few sessions of other people playing, but, I'm still not super comfortable yet with what to do. So please, give me any advice, recommendations, tips, and anything else you can think of. I just wanna make sure they have fun at the end of the day.

Also, does anyone here have any experience with Dungeon World? I have a friend online who's swearing by it up and down, but, I haven't really gone out of my way to research it yet, but, I thought I'd just ask here anyway. Thanks in advance.

Do not fall for temptation of your own adventure right out of the bat. Play it safe. DM Curse of Strahd and Storm King's Thunder a couple of times. Take notes of how they are structured and what makes them work.

Dungeon World is better reserved for when you've played a bit and accumulated a bit of D&D tropes. Not diving into specifics, it's a fun enough game but relies in improvising right off the bat, both from you and players.

Anyway, my advice would be this: remember you're in control but don't restrict players. They can and will surprise you a lot. You'll have to improvise at some point. Don't be afraid of them going off the path you've envisioned, embrace it.

Also it's perfectly okay to say no if the player does something that totally doesn't make sense to you. Group creativity is the best thing, but it's not about shitting all over your vision of the game, you're the one who'll be putting in the most work.

5e Starter Set is actually really good for new GMs and players, a satisfying guidance / freedom ratio. Go with that.
