I can't answer your question about the Montreal Area, but I have a question for you. How's the hiking and wild camping in Romania? I know you have a lot of forests and mountains, but I was wondering if you can safely/secluded/legally camp in the wild as a tourist and travel around the countryside? Is it easy enough to travel from village to village and stock up on supplies as you go?

Pick one.
As it relates to safely camping, it does depend where you go, there are forests with bears and wolves which tend to kill tourists a lot, but if you find a friend in Romania he'll tell you what to avoid.
>supplies as you go
Every village I've been through has a general store and you'd be all right buying that stuff as long as you have the romanian currency. I would also recommend learning words like water: "apă", and all other supplies you know you'll need, otherwise the clerks might not understand what you're saying and get angry. If they do understand, they tend to ask for euro payments and raise the prices significantly, so watch out for that.
All that being said, I highly recommend you go, I have yet to see wild that free anywhere else in the world.

I've been using a box of 6 $10 buckknives I got at a gay rage sale for the past year. The box of 6 of them was like $40 so wtf of course. When they can't sharpen anymore or lose their original sharpness, I just throw them out or give them to some kid.

Now that I only have two left, recommend me a good knife that will last me forever.

Also worth noting, look into brands that have good waruntee s and customer service
Despite things being made well little things may go wrong, and of you have a good company backing you you shouldn't have to worry about it
>>
>>1046348
I threw out the first one since I kept it accidentally in the travel luggage at the aeroport. It taught me never to be careless with shit like that.

The other three I gave to other people as "first knives". They don't use them at all but keep them on them whenever they hike randomly. I try not to throw shit out. The other side is that I start hoarding stuff too which is a problem.

>>1046356
What about going on ebay to save 10-25% of the cost of the knives but not getting warranty?

I need some advice. Two days ago I was doing yard work which involved completely removing a twenty year old english ivy that grew ugly and unchecked. It turns out it formed some really nice trunks so having choice between discarding them right away and trying to do something interesting with them I pulled them from the ground as carefully as possible given the conditions (it grew in mostly sand and brick rubble somehow) and planted them in pots for now.
Due to the pruning 100% of the leaves are gone and roots had to be reduced significantly during harvesting. I planted them in much richer soil, on the second day fertilized with something that should encourage rooting and left it in a half shade under a large tree.
I don't expect much, wouldn't be surprised if they all died but from what I observed over the years english ivy is extremely resilient and grows like a weed essentially.
In about how long you think I should expect to see signs if they'll make it or not?

>more specifically where to put the tent?

Hey guys. So I got the pictured pack, Osprey Aether 70 AG and I am having trouble figuring out where to pack my tent. It's a Kelty Salida 2, and is kind of bulky and 4.5 lbs in it's little carry bag.

Is this something that you should carry on the outside of your pack? I could easily fit it on the outside, but then the rain cover wouldn't go over it all, and it might throw the balance off. Is this something I should be packing inside it, near the top?

Sorry I am backpacking nude, and having trouble figuring out how I am going to fit all my gear in this bag, which still doesn't seem that big. My REI Magma 10F bag is just bursting out of the sleeping bag compartment at the bottom.

>>1043105
You pack each part of the tent separately, not as a big bulky bag. Only thing I'd accept is to put the poles on the outside. Everything should fit inside easily.

With a 70 L pack, the poles should probably be fitting inside too, unless you've got some crazy gear requirements or bear cans.
>>
>>1043105
>>1043114
It might also be helpful to post your entire gear list, maybe with pictures. Chances are you can leave some gear at home.
>>
Heavy stuff at the bottom and priority stuff at easy access points and everything else in points that are more "storage".

Ultimately, pack and repack your pack with various amounts of gear like 100 times until you find out what you can really fit in your pack. The weight distribution only matters if you intend to set records or are terrified of sore muscles.

How do I SAFELY make a fire?
I mean, I know I need to collect branches, and i can use matches or a lighter to start the fire, then the fire needs air, etc.

But I mean: how do i set up my firespot so i don't accidently burn down the whole area?
My friend says you need to dig a hole and start the fire in there, but i've looked at Youtube and Instagram and people never seem to do that.

Sort of depends on how dry the area is. Just use your judgement, unless your judgement is shit.

So a group of friends and I have recently had a stupid discussion about what animals we could fight with the six of us and win versus one of said animal. The rules of said right would be no weapons, in the conditions the animal would live in, and lastly there would be only the one animal when there are the five of us. Our heights and weights are as follows; 5'9" 125lb scrawny Mexican guy, 6'1" 175lb decently built white guy, 6'0" 180lb more muscular guy, 6'0 230lb college football player, 6'1" 260lb lineman build, and lastly 6'0" 275lb lineman/fatty build. We have discussed and we think that winning matchup would include almost any large bird (emu, ostrich, ect) with at most one casualty. We also think we could win against most lesser primate (anything smaller than a chimp), and for bears at most a black bear. Moreso almost any large fish or shark would win too because the environmental advsntsge. Any opinions in these fights and others, and why you would win or lose? I know this is weird for /out/ but is where else to post it lol

I agree with the bird, though you some of you will definitely get pecked.
There is absolutely NO way you could take a chimp, or any small monkey. Those things are SOLID muscle and at best you could all kick it while it tears one of your friend's face off and maybe it would run away.
If you got into a fight with a black bear, it probably wouldn't flee because the only time it would fight you is in defense of its cubs. And it could kill all of you, hands down.
If you had a gun or a blade obviously it would be different but still someone is going to die.
>>
>>1048337
With the ape section we said any smaller than a chimp in the thought of this, because for the most part we would have more weight than it (in the 2 bigger guys) they would try to almost pin it when other would target vitals like neck or eyes. Black bears are much smaller than you'd think so that's why we said we would have a chance with they same tactic of basically sacrificing one or two while others get eyes or other spots. We aren't looking for survival of everyone, just wondering if any of us would survive said fights. Any opinions on any big cats, wolf types, or other random African wildlife?

Hey, I am 19 years old and i am from Germany. I will be staying in canada for the next year and i want to do lots of outdoor related stuff like hiking and mountaineering. The only problem is, that i am traveling solo, and that I wont be up north in summer, so i will do most of the national parks in winter. I am planning on 1 to 2 week long hikes in tombstone, gates of the Arctic, maybe torngat and stuff like Banff, jasper and yoho. Is it possible to do week long trips in winter, while traveling solo? Has anyone ever done this and can share some experiences or some advice?

How do you keep your dog tick free in NE? Do you just have to do a tick check after every /out/ting? Anyone have tips on checking quickly?

Not too worried about the dog getting sick, as there is medication to kill ticks. More worried about them dropping off the dog in the house/car and biting me.

>>
>>1047832
The heartworm medicine I use on my dog supposedly kills ticks on contact, and I do a quick once-over with a curry comb when we get home.

It's never been a problem for me.
>>
>>1047835
I think the medicine only kills once the tick bites. Sometimes they will drop off the dog before biting. Found a couple in my car and couch so far this season.

Are you in NE or somewhere else? Also what kind of fur/hair does your doggo have?
>>
>>1047839
NW corner of MO. So kinda similar area depending on which side of NE you're on.

Yellow lab, so coarse, straight, decently long fur.

All the live ticks that've made it into my house I can say with 95% certainty came in either off me, or off my cat from my yard (his heartworm medicine doesn't kill ticks). I do find a fair number of dead ticks in my dog's bed or in the bed of my truck. Doggo doesn't ride in the cab with me, he goes in the truck bed under the camper shell.

Heading up to Bella Coola British Columbia for Canada day long weekend and I wanted to hear about some tips and tricks to keep Bears from destroying my campsite. Bella Coola is the Mecca for Grizzlies and I plan to do some tent camping in a forestry site. I've crossed paths with black bears while hiking and i've seen Grizzlies form a far but I've yet to have an incident with a bear in my campsite and I feel like I'm probably knocking on wood by making that claim since i don't really do too many precautionary measures to keep bears out of the area. Aside from some camping adventures where a bear cache was provided, keeping the site clean, throwing out trash every night, and keeping my cooler in my car.

so folks, what are do's and don'ts when it comes to bears near campsites? Also, what the hell do I do if one wanders into my campsite and rips up my shit?

I bought a waterproof 50 liter bag that I'll tie to a tree and put all my garbage and dry food in there. I have a heavy duty, airline quality cooler with a decent seal that I plan to store in my car overnight.

You're car camping
There will be people around
There is always someone who is a bigger idiot than you
They will be making a mess, frying smelly shit, and generally being bear bait
Keep your shit clean, tidy, and odor free, and the bears will go to the idiot and leave you alone

I also would have accepted "Burr Awurr"

Yeah keep you stuff in your car, have some burr spray in the tent/on you when you hike. I don't think there's anything too comprehensive you need to do, just common sense precautions.

Keep all food and garbage far from camp, hang food. Eat far from camp. Every family member should have their own bear spray and know how to use it as well as understand bear behaviour. In heavily bear populated areas you can set up a portable electric bear fence.
