Did some overlanding with three friends with a smol hol in our screen which let in mozzies in once every hour or so. This meant that our sleeping area had the occasional mosquito and on the third day, I had learned to sleep with my full flecktarn autismos, pants tucked into socks, gloves tucked into sleeves, and the midge head net. Wrists got bitten because i couldn't get a good seal around the sleeves but that aside, they kept buzzing at my head screen and kept me up at night with the bzz sound.

This was with two of my friends (one bare chested) literally 1 metre away from me. They didn't have head nets or any shit and mozzies didn't go after them. Rather, the two chose to buzz around my headnet and get killed or to bite the 1cm gap on my wrist than to go after the full bare chested friend who weighs twice as much as I do.

>TL;DR
>why do mozzies prefer me more than other people and why doesn't DEET fucking work

Yeah, muzzies are a big problem not only /out/ in the woods but specially in bug cities. :/

Wait, how many Lumberjacks are killed each year from fallen tree in their direction? This is a legit cause of death right?

Nope.

This anon doesn't know what they're talking about. It definitely happens although I have no idea how frequently. Where I am from loggers hardly ever use hand crews anymore its all done in processors. Other logging dangers include highly defective/damaged trees with unpredictable wood inside (known as widowmakers) and loggers with less experience (or when felling a tree with a lot of lean) there is a chance to barber chair the tree, which means some the wood fiber is still attached in the wrong pace, ie. not on the hingewood but near the outside of the tree. The causes wood to spring back at full force, often enough to strike and kill the sawyer.

Hello everyone! Have any of you ever had any experience in hiking any of the following mountains located in California?

Mt. Whitney
Mount Langley
Mount Williamson
White Mountain Peak
Lone Pine Peak

We usually hike Mt. Whitney, but this year getting a permit is next to impossible and their is no way I can drive a couple hours for the lottery system to tell me that I am not allowed on the Mt. that day.. Have any of you had any experience with these mountains? If so any suggestions on which one you prefer?

I recommend Shasta and Lassen in the North. Beautiful mountains you can hike or drive, no permit needed.

Does anyone here just think about getting away from it all? I'm just really fed up with the modern world. I mean I'm decently happy. I have a nice IT sec job making $60k here in Alabama and I have a nice GF that is a mechanical engineer. We're thinking about saving up all our money for like 5 years and leaving for the Midwest, buying a small house with a decent plot of land, and working contract jobs here and there. I'm at the point that I dont care about having money and just want to be my own person. I'm thinking of Wyoming or Montana but I'm not used to such cold winters although I can learn.

Has anyone done this and can you give me any advice?

>>
Don't come to the Midwest, our /out/ sucks. Fortunately Montana and Wyoming are not part of the Midwest and are pretty dank /out/ states.
>>
Yes, and I do often. I am fortunate enough to have been able to recently purchase 18 acres in a very rural area several hours from where I live now. I have $12k leftover to build a small cabin this summer, which will be used as a weekend getaway and hunting cabin. There is no power there, so solar/generator will be needed. No cell signal either. I'm debating whether or not to make a youtube channel and detail all this. Anyone that has any tips or suggestions is more than welcome to comment.
>>
>>1044860
That sounds nice. What you're doing would be more realistic for me. There's a good bit of cheap land here in Alabama but I want climate that is a bit colder.

I would want electricity and internet in my dream getaway. I don't want completed isolation but like 30-40 minutes to the nearest town via vehicle.

What kind of jobs or professions exist that directly relate with nature and outdoors? I don't necessarily mean Park Ranger or lawnmower guy, but anything where day-to-day work would deal with the nature around us.

Wildlife/game and fish law enforcement. Get a degree in wildlife management or some sort of recreation degree. It makes you more competitive, and you'll get paid more. The pay is decent and increases over time, and the incentives are usually pretty good. Truck, boat, four wheeler, and other things like that. You don't have to stress quite so much about writing stupid tickets to meet some quota, and you're outside most of the time. If you can get your foot into the federal side, they pay very well compared to most states.

Hello.

I am planning on deliberately going missing. I am not here to tell you why or what caused me to want to do this.
I plan on surviving for a pro-longed period of time in a large North-American National Park on my own. I am in
no way prepared for this task, and that is why I came to this board. I am in need of survival related tactics, guides,
tips and other pieces of information relating to survival in a large, mainly uninhabited territory. I am planning
on doing this in the pacific Northwest (USA&Canada) if that helps.

Your best way to survive is to not do it. Surviving in the wilderness is NOT for the inexperienced. You need to practice and train for years before even attempting to survive for prolonged periods of time in the wild.
>>
>>1043512
How long is your "prolonged period"
When are you starting?
What prior outdoor experience do you have?
What equipment do you have and how much money do you have to procure additional things?
Do you fully understand how stupid this idea is and how autistic you sound?
>>
>>1043512
The fall and winter will kill you in the national parks in WA. Especially if you're inexperienced.

I picked myself up a new pair of hiking boots, WindRiver Lefroy, pic related.
I've broken them in by going on a few good hikes, but for some reason the right shoe persistently irritates the top of my foot, right where the foot meets the shin, and after a good 15km hike it hurts like a bitch.
Anyone know how to help this? I've never had this issue with any other boots

I live in a suburban area with a shitload of deer. They are killed all the time by cars (in addition to other critters of course). It's bad enough that the county pays for bow hunters to come in and cull the population. In the past 24 hours alone, I've seen two fat does dead on the shoulder.

>I want to start harvesting these animals. If possible I want to get the bodies REALLY FRESH, so I could potentially harvest the meat. I definitely would want to skin and try out different methods for preserving the pelt/hide. I've got experience with this from my days as a kiddo with a bb gun, and a back yard full of squirrels.

I'm in MD if anyone has better details. Google has yielded shit results, and I was wondering if anyone had any expertise or sage advice on this matter. I was wondering if I could get on some sort of call list? Or how should I go about getting better intel on very recent roadkill?

Pic isn't mine.

Is anyone watching it this season? They are now doing teams and are going back to BC, I like the BC shows cause it's kinda like where I live. I'm still not really understanding what they are doing this year.

And before someone says -----> /tv/ the mods have let us post about it before. It's actually kinda informative with life lessons like: Don't hoard your food. Don't make a boat. And last but not least, don't run around carrying sharp objects.

Yep. Trying to raise as much food as possible. Got a garden, some chickens, and a few months worth of food storage. Got a berkey water filter and some anti biotics. A few gallons of water stored, but a water collection system in the backyard for emergency only. A few guns for protecting the family. And I lI've in the rural parts of nc with a good community of like minded people.

Mainly I just like living in my own way and not being overly dependent on "the system". As long as you keep it sane and fun, it's healthy and smart. Just don't go full "doomsday"
>>
>>1023796
Yep. Same as guy above me. Few months of food storage (rice/beans/wheat/canned goods) should last about 7 months. Trying to get a good crop garden going. I raise rabbits due to noise from chickens and they are actually great at fertilizing my yard in their rabbit hutch tractor. I got a smaller water filter than yours but also keep a gallon of bleach on hand to disinfect rapidly. Also, I have medical things and lots of hand sanitizer on deck should the water get stopped or infected.
>>
>>1023814
Where did you buy the food storage from? What breed of rabbit?
