What is /out/'s favorite telescope?
I've been getting into astronomy and wanna get one. I was thinking something around $300-$400 to start

Weird price point, most scopes are either $100-200 or $1000+ I just have a bog standard nova refractor. I'm not huge into astronomy, I just know it's well built and good enough for me to see saturn with and only cost me $150

Anyone actually try to survive out of one of these altoid survival tins?

People carry this shit around like just having it will give them the means to survive hell and back with them. There filled with various shit that would either be useless in a survival situation or so little/small amounts that its near useless. Most useful things put in them would be the matches&mini bics, but you should carry a firetool in your pocket while out anyway so whats the point?

Is this just another curse of the "survival" industry baiting idiots into buying useless shit?

i make wallet survival kits (for myself), no they arent a meme, they useful in everyday situations. compactness forces you to carry things you might not normally

also, the point is to make it yourself. buying them is a whole other realm

No, no one has ever had to survive out of an altoids kits. At most, people have needed a bandaid when their kid got a boo boo, or pretended to need to start a fire innawoods with tinder out of them.

All of the "thoughts" on what they should contain are 100% imagination from out of shape neckbeards squatting in their backyards.

Best way to take care of carbon steel knives when /out/? I have experience taking care of carbon steel kitchenware, just lightly coat the surface in cooking oil after using, but how do you properly take care of a knife?

let it get a patina and keep it (cutting up fruits like apples and nanas seems to work) . always wipe it dry when it gets whett, cooking oil helps as well.

Patina
Wipe dry if wet
Don't go diving in the dead sea with it

That's how I do it
>>
So once it develops a patina, it wont rust anymore? Also how about forced patinas, do those work the same way? I just saw those online, boiling vinegar and dunking the blade in for some time

Picked up the Plano A-Series Duffel. Not sure how many slim 3601 boxes I have in it now but I know it's fucking ridiculous. I'll have to snap some pictures later. It's first outing will be this weekend, weather permitting, and I can see how it fairs over the 3700 Guide Series Hydro-Flo. Only gripes so far is I would've liked to see a rubberized bottom or at least some kind of hardening and water prevention. Also the pockets are horizontally spacious and deep but kind of minimal. Would've been nice if they went asymmetric and put a tall pocket on one side or the other. I see the PALS webbing being put to use sooner than later.

Many states have license-free fishing days where anybody can go fishing over the course of a given day or even weekend. Some have license-free beaches, piers, etc year round. As a last resort some states even offer single-day three-day or weekly licenses which are often much cheaper than an annual license. Check your local DNR website for this info or give them a call about it.

I haven't been checked by DNR once this year. Last year I was checked at least three times. As another anon pointed out the chance of being checked is always there and the cost is much higher than the license if you're caught without one.

Is hunting really necessary? Hunters kill predators to protect prey populations. Then they kill prey on the grounds that they are overpopulated. Wouldn't it be better if we just let nature take its course?

I can respect people who hunt for food rather than trophies, but they are a small minority of hunters. For most people, it is far easier and cheaper to buy meat than to pay for the privilege of hunting on someone else's land.

I wanted to check something that I was thinking about for a while, but had no time to put it to the test.
I was curious how a simple twine would do for tarp setup.
It's lighter, thinner, than paracord, and it's also piss-cheap and natural, meaning I can burn it in a fire or even burry when leaving the camp site, for me it was always frustrating how much time it takes to pack up, fucking with all the cords and shit.

Turned out, much to my own surprise, it's very good at the job - it's not only much less slippery & elastic, meaning it's easier to tighten, but it also is surprisingly strong.
I wanted to test how much pressure it can take till it brakes, pulled as strong as I could, and.... I ripped the tarp apart. And I'm not talking about those pussy ass, faggy "bushcrap" tarps, I use a regular, thick, 3m x 3m 260 grain tarpaulin.

So, it's twine for me from now on.
Just wanted to share.

Twine (jute/sisal/hemp) also has the benefit of biodegrading relatively quickly innawoods so it doesn't contribute to litter. Plus birds and squirrels absolutely fucking love that shit for their nests. I use twine around my camping spot and even left out for a couple days whatever strands are scattered about get pulled apart by the wildlife to make nests. Any twine strands left out over winter basically rot away by summer.

Hey guys, I ordered an air rifle recently (Crosman 2400kt) and I plan to plink and hunt small game, namely squrriels. I have never hunted before and i feel like there's some things I need to know. For one I know to look up hunting rules for me area. But what I want to ask you guys is is it a good idea to eat the squirrels I shoot? I hate to just shoot them for fun, I'd like to be at least using them. I live in a small neighborhood, would urban squirrels be ok to eat? Or would they be all wormy? And is it possible to tan the fur? I have no idea if I could do anything with squrriel fur but having the option seems appealing.

Many thanks!!

Yeah, If you're a car camper. lol. Anyone who does anything other than groomed campsites needs something that doesn't become a pancake the second it touches a thorn or a stick or grain of sand.

If comfort is more important to you than reliability, you don't belong /out/.

I'm a /trv/fag who grew up hunting and fishing.

Due to the circumstances of life, I've not spent much time alone in the great outdoors since I was young.

Today marked the first occasion I've tried setting up a solo camp since I was hitchhiking in the Balkans.

Instead of spending a couple of nights alone in nature, I sperged out and came back home.

>set up camp relatively easily
>collect firewood, pump water from a well some miles away, return back to base to cook dinner
>take a walk to a nearby lake and spend a while watching elk wading and foraging for food
>darkness falls
>little disoriented by the hoots of owls, bugling of elk, and screeching of loons
>the forest falls silent after some time and I begin again to relax
>12:30am but still not tired
>walk over to my car to have a cigarette, thinking about taking my laptop out to do some personal writing
>looking up at the stars and admiring the faint glow of the Milky Way
>notice an unusually bright star shining through the trees
>stare at for a second longer and realize something is amiss
>it's jiggling around and seems to be moving ever so slightly
>in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and didn't see a single other person the entire day
>light is getting closer and seems to be being used discreetly
>accidentally nudge my driver side door, which turns on the interior headlamp
>see the light swivel down the ground and then switch off
>start fucking hearing banjo music in my head and imagining a sea of overalls pouring out of the forest with pitchforks and broken bottles of whisky
>panic and break down my tent and camp in five minutes
>drive away in 4WD as quickly as I can
