Sylvain Tesson - Consolations of the Forest: Alone in a Cabin in the Middle Taiga.

This will be my first time hiking and I am leaving next friday. Today I finally had all my shit together and am trying to pack my back for the first time.

Long story short, I can't seem to get the weight right and it keeps leaning to one direction. It might very well be my fault for not packing it well enough. Anyway, I decided to make it a little bit easier on me by putting my tent and sleeping mat on the bottom of the bag.

However, this is what I found.

(sticks are for illustration)

I feel like this is a sign the bag isn't up to par and maybe I shouldn't use it at all?

perfectly fine place
>I feel like this is a sign the bag isn't up to par and maybe I shouldn't use it at all
use it for a season or two, learn what you like, don't like, and wish it had, then buy a better pack when you can make an informed decision.
>>

Thanks for the reply, good to know the bottom is a good place. Confirmed what I hoped.

Anyway, did you see the picture? I am worried about the straps. They don't line up at all.
>>
ah, i see what you're concerned about. i suggest unloading the pack, adjusting the shoulder straps to the same length, then hanging them over a level closet rod or something to see if they're asymetrical, too. crooked gear straps you can work around. crooked shoulder straps will fuck you up.

How did your love affair with the outdoors start?
I went to a YMCA sleepaway camp for 9 years as a camper and worked there for 3 more, went on a few canoe trips, and took off from there

I hated it was a little bitch until I was like 16 then I realized to just shut the fuck up and deal with it.

"Is flooding and we need to bail? Guess I'm walking an extra 10 miles in middle of night to leave. Already undressed? Fuck it, I'm walking in my skivvies. "

Wasn't really sure which board this belonged to but /out/ seemed as good as any. Do any of you use and recommend military rations as good backpacking sustenance? Perhaps not solely but serving as a high calorie base and adding other stuff too? What sort of stuff would serve as a good supplement to them? Those who do have experience, what are the pros cons? I've heard constipation is an issue but that seems easily resolvable if you're prepared for it.

I had a mate in the TA(brit army thing) back at uni and she offloaded loads of her 24 hour ration packs to me at the time. I remember they actually tasted pretty awesome and were really quite substantial (hence why she never finished or even cracked them all open). But I wonder do other countries have better rations? And where is the best place to go about buying these sorts of things?

They're pricey and can be a bit bulky. I try to pack everything flat, and that's not really something MREs do, although you could open it and store the packages however you decide
>I've heard constipation is an issue
The gum in (at least American MREs) have laxatives to help with this issue
>>
If you bust open a US MRE you can pack it town better. Some of them aren't bad for what they are, I can't remember which ones I've eaten though because they are few and far between. They're kind of inefficient for what you get out of them because of the water weight. But then again, it means you don't have to rehydrate it. The packaging is resilient, but they can be effected by heat, and they realistically do not store very long which is why they are a meme as 'survival food'.

If you do it, don't make it more than a third of your food I would say. Just use them for variety. I keep one in my day pack as kind of an emergent, no prep food item that isn't a protein puck or jerky. Usually I'll have some combination of an MRE entree, two small snacks, a protein puck and either smoked oysters or kippered fish.

I am kind of curious to try some of the Russian MREs, look those up some time, they're pretty different.
>>
>>1032177
That sounds pretty fucked up for the guy who forgets that and just wants a little gum to suppress his appetite. But I was talking UK ration packs, the gum in them is Wrigley's, the same brand of gum you'd buy any place.

>>1032193
As for bulk I don't see what exactly would be so much of an issue. I don't know how american rations are contained but british ones are in foil bags which are more or less flat in profile, pic related is from the iraq/afghanistan stuff back in 2009 and I'm sure they haven't changed since.

I suppose not being dehydrated is not the most efficient but loads of stuff aside from the main meal seems pretty convenient like soup powder, isotonic drink mixture, and they come with waterproof matches and water purification tablets which is neat.

I guess they're a little pricey from what I've seen so far though. I can get 10 of them for £100, which isn't cheap compared to stuff you can prepare yourself. But it's not extortionate.

The Loyalsock State forest with the Loyalsock Trail is my go to. It's a pretty tough trail at times, but it's great. Passes through Worlds End State Park which is nice.

If you're in the Susquehannock State Forest, hit up the Hammersley Wild area and hike to the Hammersley pool and take a swim.

Hey /out/. I've always been into outdoorsy things. I was born and raised in a rural area, and still live the same way. Hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, etc. If it's outside, I'm doing it. My only issue is heat and humidity. It completely kills me. This really restricts my /out/ based activities in the summer months. How do I learn to love the heat? Or how can I curb it to some extent. I'm a recovering fatty btw, so I know when I get fit, that'll help. What can I do until then to help me enjoy the great outdoors?

>>
The heat fucks me up too. I haven't really found anything that helps, but hiking into swimming holes and shit like that is always fun
>>
>>1050029
You don't. There is no way to get used to hot+humid. You can get used to hot, or you can get used to humid, but when it's both it sucks.

You can mitigate the discomfort and health risks by wearing light, wicking clothing (thin merino wool or polyester) and sticking to the shade though.

Alternatively become nocturnal.
>>
Just keep doing stuff in the heat and you'll get used to it. That's pretty much the only way.

Not sure if this is the right board, but here goes.
I am currently in college and have been thinking about what I want to do and after a lot of thought, decided that I want to buy some land and live the dream.

>The question is where!
I am already pretty set on Texas and was thinking somewhere between Austin and San Antonio. (outside city limits obviously and closer to Austin.)
I want at somewhere around 10-25 acres to have a backyard shooting range (Will obviously set up a thick backstop), space to keep some animals (Few horses, some goats, chickens, and maybe some cows), have a fish/duck pond, and maybe grow a carnivorous plant garden. (in that order. first two are mandatory and last ones are maybes.) I also need it to be near a medical center or at least somewhere where I can get a job. (Sonography) I also would like it to be at least within 1 day driving distance to a forested area for going innawoods, but can't be too close as I will be moving my parents into my new home with me and they are scared suburbanites that don't want to live "Where things will attack you."

Any advise would be greatly appreciated as I too am a suburbanite!

That's not really a homestead, it sounds more like having a house with goats in the back yard.

People typically start small and work there way up. You buy a house/land, plant a small garden(a real one that grows food), add to the garden over several seasons, get some chickens if you feel up to it, etc.

And if you work full time there's only so much "homesteading" you can do, it will be limited to what is basically advanced gardening. I'm the same age as you with similar plans, but the progression I'm going into allows for self employment. Btw, if you're in the medical field consider the Dallas area.
>>
>>1049930
Yeah I figured that wasn't the right word, but the image search had pretty pics so I just went with it. Mostly I just wanted a nice house with enough land that I could do whatever I eventually wanted to do, but keep it small enough that it won't really be too difficult to take care of. I am not familiar with the Dallas area. Are there many good places to go fishing or hunting? I don't want to be too close to Dallas honestly. I have heard that it has a pretty high crime rate. What about Temple or Waco? I really liked Marble Falls, but it looks like it would be expensive as hell.
>>
How much money should I save in order to make the property livable? (House built, power, water, mostly cleared, etc.)
Like could I have say 12 acres of land outside the city limits of Temple Texas and have a house built with utilities, have it cleared enough to build other things later, and maybe have a fence around the property for say $375,000-400,000?

I want the house to be pretty big or at the very least have it be done in a way that I could easily expand it later. I want it to end up with six rooms and 2.5 bathrooms. (One room will be an awesome indoor cat area that instead of walls will have mesh/wire so that my cats can feel like outside cats, but not actually go out and start killing birds and other wild animals.) Is it better to just build a house the way I want it from the start or to build a smaller house and expand it as I get more money? Like obviously the cat room could wait till later.

Who told you it looks like that?

I haven't been down there in a month or so, but up here in the Gallatin range the snow is off until 9000 feet or so.
>>
>>1049878
That picture is from the ranger office.

I just got off the phone with them and they advised not to attempt Teton Crest trail unless I have experience snow hiking with axes/crampons.

I'm not sure if they are just trying to scare people off or if its really that bad.
>>
100% you can find a store with ice axes near the tetons. snow this time of year is generally technically easy, if physically challenging. just halve your normal speed when planning.

and watch out for avalanche risk angles, cornices, snow bridges, and high/fast/cold river crossings from snow melt.

I've worked on a farm before
I've worked with horses, lamas, chickens, some cattle, dogs
I fucking loved working on a farm
I loved being outdoors
These days I'm in an office and want to retire at 40
I used to go fishing
I used to go hiking up some pretty horrible terrain and had to take frequent breaks since I would be out of breath so often going uphil but straight through, or downhill on the mountain climb was simple

Maybe I should just buy a truck and go fishing/hiking again?
I should mention I live near the mountains already and its kind of tough to go off normal roads since I only have a car

I'm looking for a way to maybe connect a Garmin GPS to a smartphone to then have some sort of satellite connection where there is no cell service or WiFi. I work in Northern Ontario for long periods of time and have no means of communication. I know there are sat phones you can buy, though they are very expensive. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'd ask >>>/g/ but limiting factors will be who provides your satellite/carrier service

Can anyone provide me with employment opportunities within the goolging information for incapables market
>>
>>1048517
You clearly don't understand how GPS or satcom works at all. GPS is one way communication for all practical purposes, the only data that is sent up to GPS satellites is orbit data for increased accuracy.

Your garmin GPS can't send signals out, it can only receive. Sending signals from a small handheld unit into space is far more difficult than sending signals from space to earth using a 10 ton multi-million dollar military satellite. That is why sat phones cost money.

The absolutely cheapest alternative will be SPOT GEN3, but those are intended just to send pre-programmed "I'm alive" or "SOS" messages to you family and emergency services. They can be had for $150 or something like that with cheap-ish subscriptions.

Garmin makes satellite communicators (inreach) that start at around $400 and will communicate with your smartphone or work standalone. Garmin charges $50/month for unlimited text messages on annual plans and $25/month for 40 messages. $0.5 for messages after those 40.

Your other cheap option is ROM Communications Text Anywhere, which is like inreach (same device price) with a way shittier device that needs a smartphone to work (no standalone screen like inreach) but offers a cheaper subscription of 100 (100 total, both send and receive) messages each month for for $30. $0.27 for messages after those 100.

And then there are the proper sat phones that cost $1000 and up, but I take it you don't want one of those.
>>
>>1048607
After a bit of googling, seems you can find older (before Garmin bought DeLorne) inReach units at around $300, so that might be that best option. And to clarify, these units use iridium satellites to send shit, because GPS is only satellite to ground.

/tpg/-Tobacco Pipe General

Feel free to post tobaccos (no weed allowed), pipes, collections, pics of favorite combos for going /out/, pics of what you're doing with your pipe and any questions you might have.

Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a Missouri Meerschaum Legend corncob pipe and a pouch of either Prince Albert, Carter Hall or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
Accessories needed: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $20.

Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Pack it looser and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.
If you're still having trouble, try packing using the Frank Method, detailed here:
