I'm going on a chartered fishing trip in a few days with some family. Never seriously fished before. I've probably picked up a rod less then 10 times in my life. What should I do to avoid looking like a knob? Any friendly tips would be appreciated.

What the hell? Just tell them you are new at this, total n00b, no clue. Why pretend?

Or did you humble brag about your 6 ton tuna catch with a harpoon while fishing in Mauritius or something?
>>

Don't fling your rod around, tell them you are a newbie, ask for help if you need, be polite, be conscious of where every bit of your rod is and where the lure and sinker are at all times.

The wife and I are traveling to Boston next month for our anniversary.

I read that the Boston Harbor Islands are great for fishing and just /out/ shit in general.

>is it possible to rent salt water kayaks or do I have to take a ferry?

>how long do Boston fishing licenses take to process?

>are there any other /out/ shit to do in Boston?

Boston fishing licences generally take about 6 months to process and that is only if you're selected in the lottery system. Also, unpowered watercraft (kayaks) have been banned for safety reasons so you might not have a good time.

Been tree climbing a few times over the past few months SRT. We don't have mountains nearby but I would like to try sometime in the future.

I can already ascend with prussick, changeover to repel on a figure 8 or munter, ascend with just my feet. What are some things I could practice when low to the ground for emergencies?

If you are going camping this summer , in a remote , interesting place, please consider calling a real estate agent.

Call them up and tell them you want a remote parcell of land for under 300k and you want to camp on any locations that seem viable.
Just have them alert the owner that you will be camping on their vacant land to see if you could live there.
While camping take notes and see if it would be a viable place to build a commune.
Free camping for you and you help the board find a building site.
Thanks

I'm very new to going /out/. I wanted to try climbing one (or more) of the Adirondack's High Peaks.
I hear that Mount Marcy is a great view and is decent for beginners without anything too technically challenging.
It's around 15 miles round trip with with 3000 some-odd feet elevation change.
I figure this is very doable for anyone who isn't a fatass, correct?
What sort of gear should be necessary/reasonable for this type of thing? I'm a bit clueless on the topic and some guidance on what would be reasonable and safe to bring would be well appreciated.

Did a loop around Marcy last summer; hike he Haystacks, March, Grey, and skylight.

There is nothing technical about it. There are portions of the trail where rocks make it very uneven and if it's muddy you'll have a tough time; but it is what it is. The trails up any high peak are pretty direct to the summit, no switch backs or offsets from the elevation; so in one sense they can be more difficult than a 14er in the Rockies.

Which route are you coming in from? Are you going to do it as a day hike or are you going to camp out at a lean-to?

You really don't need anything more than a fanny pack with water and snacks if you don't plan on spending the night. Trekking poles might help you keep your posture / protect your knees.

Any of the peaks are doable for a beginner; but if you're not in shape they can take a bit out of you. Some people take a full 12 hrs to just go to march and back; some trail runners do it in 3-4.
>>
If you're a beginner you'll probably have some issues with your feet getting beat to shit if you jump right into a 15mi day hike. That's probably a more likely issue than cardiovascular endurance.
>>
>>1059136
Was planning on parking at the Adirondack Loj and going from the trailhead there. Are you familiar with any other good options? I was split over whether or not I should do a day hike or spend the night. It'd either be a solo day hike for me or an easy two-day trip with some less physically-apt family members. That's cool that it can be done lightweight and cheap for a day hike.
>>1059139
I've been running 5-8km 4 days a week which is far less than the hike, for sure, but probably higher-impact.
Would hiking shoes help much?

Who here goes off trail n h'whacks them bushes?

I've started trying to do this, mostly to find good places to camp away from the hippies.

Ive ran into problems especially in the summer when i want to wear shorts and shortsleeves and the foliage gets too intense. I want to avoid actually taking a machete to things but sometimes i wish i had one.

Any tips/experiences with getting through rough terrain?

Anyone accidentally step into or off of something camouflaged with foliage?

working in the woods everyday with steep hills and 1000 whips in the way you have 3 options
1). go slower
2). go around
3). get fucked

A light pair of pants made from something sturdy and non-denim will do wonders for your trek though.

I've got a methanol stove with me in Peru but I haven't seen menthol for sales since the US (traveling south through the Americas).

I want to do a couple days hike to some ruins, so what I'm interested in is what's the next best thing to burn? Seems like it'd have to be either ethanol or gasoline.

Buy some ever clear or pure grain alcohol at the liquor store and you'll be good. You can also mix a little into powdered drinks
>>
Go to a pharmacy and ask for "alcol", "alcohol puro" or "alcohol de quemar". Usually they will try to sell you 70%, but you want 96% (96 grado).
Barring that, go to paint or hardware stores and ask for "alcohol desnaturalizado"

Definitely gasoline

After spending a fortune over the years on high end outdoor gear I have started to buy my stuff at decathlon.

It's not half bad. I have fjallraven and berghaus pants but these 25 euro pants are my favourite now and really can take a beating.

Next I'll be buying a hammock and tarp for 30 euro total.

Have I been duped all those years?

IDK about those pants, but decathlon in general is great for low quality at very low prices.
Seriously, it's good for anything that you can compromise on quality, you can't beat it FOR THE PRICE.

Their merino shirts are the cheapest on the market, their sneakers are cheap and good enough, the basic tents and hammocks work pretty well, it's a good store.

Opinions on the Mora Garberg?
Whats up with the holes in the so called full tang?
Is the price to high?
33 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1057405
The holes are to prevent the blade coming off. They are full of molded plastic. Looks like a well engineered design to me.

The price is too high.
>>
>>1057407

Mora Companion $12

Mora Garberg $90

For me, it's not enough of an improvement to justify that much of a price increase for a small increase in tang material, and two pinholes and maybe a lanyard hole would be all it needs...but I can see why they put the holes away from the mid point of the blade, because that's where 90% of the torque that'll break a tang would be concentrated and rounding the transition would appear to make sense over a sharp sudden reduction.

Yeah it's tough but not $80 tougher.

cringey destruction test.

Does anyone here support organic agriculture? If so, could you explain to me how can it be more respectful with the environment when you have to use more land (at the expense of forests or at the expense of regenerating old croplands) to produce the same amount of food?

>>
>>1056921
Seems like you don't know what you are talking about. Industrialized farming practices are about equal when it comes to organic or not organic. Both can use pesticides and fertilizers.
>>
>>1056930

Organic can only use non industrial fertilizers that are far from the productivity of them.
>>
>>1056921
I don't support "organic" farming per se, but I do support local farms. I imagine the difference in emissions between shipping tomatoes from across the country vs shipping them in from just outside of town is negligible. Most local farms tend to be "organic" so I end up supporting it tacitly I suppose.

I recently went with a friend up to an 11k foot tall peak to summit it. 16 miles, 4200 ft. climbed. We get to the last 1/3 mile of the climb, and despite the fact that we had 4 season poles, yaktraks, and a lot of experience hiking she balked at this. I agreed that we'd try again another day, because the entire face was a slush fest and she was freaking out about a mild rain storm that was beginning to hit ( it ended up not raining a ton).

How would you feel about this? We had about 600 feet over 1/3- 1/2 of a mile to climb in this slushy snow. Note the water flowing from the bottom right. What would you have done?

>>
I would have kept on...slush is not gonna kill you??? The idea is to beat Mother Nature...not let a drizzle stop you.
>>
>>1056789
Her worry was that we'd slip, and to be fair that would be pretty bad in this situation. The few steps I did take out onto it ( and I think this scared her more than anything) I punched right through the snow and fell about 20 inches or so with one leg. I mean, I would have continued, but at what point is it too dangerous in this situation? The final slope started a little ahead of there and went straight up to the summit.

The mountain will be there another day.
Your goal is to get home safely, but you'd like to make a stop at the summit.
Make good decisions so you can reach that waypoint another day when the conditions are right.
