I'm going on a chartered fishing trip in a few days with some family. Never seriously fished before. I've probably picked up a rod less then 10 times in my life. What should I do to avoid looking like a knob? Any friendly tips would be appreciated.

What the hell? Just tell them you are new at this, total n00b, no clue. Why pretend?
Or did you humble brag about your 6 ton tuna catch with a harpoon while fishing in Mauritius or something?

Don't fling your rod around, tell them you are a newbie, ask for help if you need, be polite, be conscious of where every bit of your rod is and where the lure and sinker are at all times.

Dramamine if offshore ocean fishing. Thank me later.
I love swimming, fishing, boating, and all things ocean related. However, I'm extremely prone to terrible seasickness and I found this out the hard way on a 4 hour charter fishing trip off the coast of Miami. It was so bad, I can see why someone would rather kill themselves than suffer constant nausea from chemo. Constant nausea that you can't stop is a horrible feel.

Pro tip: get those bracelets which pregnant women use, on the wrists.
Helped me a lot while sailing.
