For 900 dollars you get
>40 liter backpack
>7,500 calories
>winter sleeping bag (No bivy or tent though)
>5 liters water
>tacticool flashlight and multitool
>navshit
>3 ways to start a fire
>poorly built first aid bag
>radio

Why would anyone ever buy this kind of shit? Do people just shop completely on impulse?

MSR 2 person cookset <50
Altiod tin full of fire starting supplies <20

I work 5 days a week and mostly just hike and camp on weekends. Want to get into longer backpacking trips. Just dont understand the scheduling aspect yet...

Convert holiday weekends into longer weekends.
>>
>>1070237
I don't work, pretty much just live in the woods. Most of my friends will extend weekends up to four days or so.
>>
I feel your pain.

University plus full time work leaves me little time for more than weekenders.

I'll use my work holidays strategically, for example take a Friday when there's a bank holiday on the Monday so I can get 4 days.

Otherwise I suffice with one or two week long trips a year.

Lost two 4-6lb trouts tuesday this week, and its been bugging me, so I went back to the same spot this evening. Ended up catching pic related (3.5lb) and a smaller one.
Weather conditions weren't the greatest, so it was difficult to find any interested trouts, but it was good to hook something and then not lose it afterwards.
>>
Caught a little 14" channel cat on a #4 hook and couldn't get the hook out of his lip to save by life. Used pliers and everything. It felt like I was going to break him so I cut the line at the base and let him go. Will he be ok?
>>
>>1070035
Maybe. Maybe not. If you really want to get the hook out, push it all the way through and crush the barb with the pliers. If that doesn't work but you still popped the barb out where you can get to it, use the wire cutters on the plier to either cut the eyelet of the hook or the whole barb off and slide the rest through.

I'm so frickin upset with myself /out/.

I've been lurking here for about 2 years now and a few months back I decided to quit my job and live outdoors to see how long I could survive on a small budget.

Well, it turns out that living outdoors is *way* harder than you guys make it seem. I ended up catching a bus to Butte, Montana and then hiked in the woods for two weeks. Ended up in some weird town called Philipsburg and I'm still here now planning my route back to New York. I am covered in bug bites, I'm hungry, I'm tired, I'm sweaty and I literally feel like I'm going out of my mind. Nature, in Montana at least, is SO FRICKING boring. Oh my god. If I wasn't so hungry all the time I'd have killed myself because it was so quiet and creepy and boring out there.

This is my first post here after all this time and all I have to say is make sure you know what you're getting into before you head out into the wilderness guys.

I went camping 4 or 5 times in fields near my house with friends between the ages of 12 and 15. I was almost the most responsible and diligent person in the group. I also don't tend to eat much so I figured I'd cope well with a restricted diet. But holy crap I realized on the first night that my doing this was just a consequence of a mental breakdown, not a sincere desire to live in a natural environment or whatever. I am now UNEMPLOYED and don't even have the mental stamina and charm I had when I found my last job. Nobody will hire me now for anything higher than minimum wage. I'm currently staying in a tiny motel and the people all look like they'd skin me for ten dollars.

Seriously what do we want /out/ to be or to go? If you take a couple seconds and look at the catalog you'll see 5+ knife threads, a handful McCandless ones, a big amount of random gear, the usual fishing general, and a couple more actual /out/ stuff.

I mean I know it's summer and a decent number of new people get their feet for the first time into the hobby but c'mon. This thread will contribute nothing and it's just as pointless but maybe some good can come up after the discussion, maybe an update of the sticky to begin with it.

If you hide (or better yet, filter) the knife threads and other general bullshittery, this board actually isn't too bad.

Unfortunately as this board has grown, the legitimate technical discussions have dwindled, the quality posters of old now lurkmoar instead of actively creating content.

>general outdoorsy stuff
It's not even that now, it a few specific outdoorsy stuff (Hiking, backpacking, bushcraft). Anything else is virtually nonexistant.

I mean I understand this is still 4chins, and I know the type of people that are attracted to a site like this...

I wish I was this passionate about something.

Well, something besides worrying about what other people think of a guy I've never met, that is. You're kinda pathetic.
>>
Let's pretend his passion was Nascar driving...

Christopher McCandless sets off, from California in an old car he rebuilt himself (he replaced the fenders and painted it), on a trip to the Daytona 500. He only gets across the state line when he runs out of fuel because he forgot to fill it up. Instead of simply walking to the nearest gas station or flagging down help he decides to push his car over an embankment and set it on fire. He then proceeds to walk on foot to the nearest car lot (which happens to be in Mexico for some reason, mostly because he burned up his map in the car and he's been taking backroads.) He finds an old bicycle in a garbage dump and uses that.

He finally gets to the car lot and buys a fixer-upper for $50. Before leaving the car lot he has to change a tire, which he replaces with the solid rubber donut. He buys fuel and heads off to the Daytona 500 again. Only he's heading deeper into Mexico and eventually ends up broken down in front of, "Autodromo Internacional de la Jolla" due to no water in the radiator. The engine block has seized up. Luckily, there's a race about to start. Christopher...er "Alexander Superspeeder", who changed his name, pays the $125 entry fee for the race.

Unfortunately, Alexander Superspeeder doesn't have a race car. He does however have an old bicycle still. He uses the bicycle to race. He makes it only 3 laps before he is too tired to steer straight and veers off into a race car and is killed.

Some Jew picks up his story and writes a book about his life and how he followed his dreams. Another Jew makes a movie about it. Armchair racers around the world adore him.

The End.

>man is mentally ill
>man shuns society, gives his money away, burns the rest of his money, identification, credit cards, gets his vehicle caught in a flash flood, becomes a filthy vagrant hitchhiker, changes his name to "Alexander Supertramp", kayaks to Mexico illegally, loses kayak in a dust storm, goes to California, shuns civilization again,
>man goes innawoods in Alaska and lives in an abandoned bus for 4 months, and was most likely the person that vandalized the supplies of food caches (he was a really stupid, mentally ill person after all, who wanted to destroy everything he had available to him from civilization)
>man dies from equal amounts of stupidity, ignorance, and starvation (and from being injured)
>enterprising Jewish author decides to write a book about it to make money from someone else's tragedy
>another enterprising Jewish guy decides more money can be made from the mentally ill innawoods guy and decides to make movie about it
