Lost two 4-6lb trouts tuesday this week, and its been bugging me, so I went back to the same spot this evening. Ended up catching pic related (3.5lb) and a smaller one.
Weather conditions weren't the greatest, so it was difficult to find any interested trouts, but it was good to hook something and then not lose it afterwards.
>>
Caught a little 14" channel cat on a #4 hook and couldn't get the hook out of his lip to save by life. Used pliers and everything. It felt like I was going to break him so I cut the line at the base and let him go. Will he be ok?
>>
>>1070035
Maybe. Maybe not. If you really want to get the hook out, push it all the way through and crush the barb with the pliers. If that doesn't work but you still popped the barb out where you can get to it, use the wire cutters on the plier to either cut the eyelet of the hook or the whole barb off and slide the rest through.

Going to try a cast net out at Galveston and catch some bait. Making some Carolina rigs and doing a little surf fishing tmrw. Any tips on what to do with the live bait? Carolina rigs

Umm. I mean Pompano/Whiting rig heh. Going to make some of those. I need new line too. Spyder Line is shit or at least my spool was. What kind of line you guys recommend for my meme caster?

4lb mono is available enough for me and works, so that's what I use.
Mostly I just fish to catch something, and UL does that in spades. When I go out, I'm often the only one at the lake who's caught anything. If I get to catching even small fish it's not a bad day out. If I land anything bigger while I'm catching small stuff, then it's a bonus.

>>1070004
Set yourself up for success and go with a tiny spinner.
1/16oz rooster tail in white or black,
OR
Mepps Aglia in size 0 with silver blade and either white or black dressed hooks.
There's a reason why everybody here swears by them. They work wonders and are cheap enough so that you can buy multiples of each without breaking the bank.

And this is good, because you will lose them on EVERYTHING. Rocks, trees, branches, weeds, (fucking) turtles, (goddamn) ducks, (you motherfucking) geese, abraded line that lets go just above the knot, and the occasional big fish that snaps your line.
>>
is there such a thing as a mono to flouro knot?

Sometimes when a small Mepps isn't workin for the Mayans or Bluegill, I gotta go small. Like those Mini Mites or whatever tiny thing on a really light jighead. Even if they are being picky, they love the mites. The tiny Gulp curly tail grubs are good for that too.

And with those, even 4lb is a bit too heavy to get much distance. I gotta stop by Bass Pro one of these days and browse. I would love to set up another ML combo with 10lb braid on a reel about the size of that Stratus V 25 and then a UL on one of those ~7' rods.

>>1070063
I just do uni-uni on everything because I'm not a lil bitch
>>
Why do people swear by 7' rods? Every YouTuber and forum poster when recommending a rod will say 7' and up.
>>
>>1070080
Further casts. Better action. Better sensitivity.
>>
>>1070081
Even when compared to a 6'6"? I feel like the difference cannot be that large
>>
>>1070083
Ehh, not huge but you notice it. If you can transport it and have room to use it, longer is kinda nice. Pretty much all my bass rods were 6'6" and the newest is 6'10" and I think next memecaster or whatever I get will be 6'9"-7'3".

Downside is it throws off the balance, especially with a cheaper and heavier rod. You also gotta get used to the extra length because a little twitch of the bait on a 6' rod will be a big hop or jerk on a 7'3" rod.
>>
Just picked up an 8ft Mitchell Avocat for some big cat fish. Wish me luck senpai.

Catching fishermen in the store.

Particularly since fish have a hard time seeing the red side of the spectrum.
Their eyes are much more attuned to UV than red, which quickly gets filtered out in water anyways.
>>
What am I supposed to do with this eleven foot graphite pole? Can I fish with just the lower half? I feel like I can. Why did I buy this?
>>
>>1070083
An extra 6 inches on a 6'6" rod is almost 8% longer. That's not insignificant.
>>
I'm going to be fishing the north side of a very large reservoir in Iowa this weekend. Wind should be from the north.

I'm looking to catch catfish but may also go after some pike.

Given the structure around me is nothing special I'm worried I'll be fishing into an aquatic desert at this time of year and with the wind direction.

How would you fish this setup if you had to?

I got mad love for the zooms, but I honestly like these culprits just a little bit better for curly tail stuff. Most of what I fish is zoom except for craws and swimbaits (D.O.A. a best, but I use zoom too).

And yeah I fish lizards basically like worms. I mean they're basically the same thing with more dangly parts.

If you want a suggestion, then you could tie a knot on the middle of the legs so they bend and you can color them with a sharpie so they become visible to the fish.
Itd be a great winter fly where I live. The trouts love that little bit of red/pink on a fly in the cold months.
>>
>>1070400
I saw those more as antennae but I might still stripe them a little with a sharpie.

>>
Have any of you guys caught gar with shrimp? For some reason that's all I caught yesterday on shrimp. Was in a park in Houston.

Fucking hell pier fishing on the great lakes is not worth the trip. Everyone and their dog races out and sets up literally 4 or 5 rods per man along the breakwall on the weekend and maybe 2 - 5 % of those rods catch anything. Everybody uses the same rig and bait too that's known to work well there but nope, good luck not being skunked anyway.
>>
>>1070463
I'm convinced that fishing is autistic. People put so much effort into it just to hook a fish after sometimes hours of waiting, take a photo, and toss it back in. Yayyy. FUN.

Yet I can't stop doing it.
>>
>>1070469
Don't diminish waiting. Hanging out at the edge of a beautiful stream for hours can be great on its own
>>
>>1070463
Exactly why I go fish for bass at some quiet pond instead.

>>1070469
>>1070481
I don't like the waiting, but I do enjoy just casting and casting and not thinking about the real world for a couple hours while everybody else is worked up over shit that doesn't matter.
>>
>>1070443
It was prob an accident the first time. He didn't stop to let me by, even though he acknowledged I was standing there. Knife was in the tackle box anyway.
>>
>>1070026
I've never caught a trout in my life. I have lakes and rivers to go to. I have a regular rod and assorted tackle. What is my best bet to catch them?
>>
>>1070539
After 4 outings covering over 15 miles of stream by myself and not catching any trout I found my best bet was to just go with someone who knew where they were. Might not be as fulfilling I suppose but trying to catch them on a fly for the first time was good enough for me
>>
>>1070504
>but I do enjoy just casting and casting and not thinking about the real world for a couple hours while everybody else is worked up over shit that doesn't matter.

All you have to do is dip a rag in a little shellac and drag it down your line. Keep the line taught and straight. Making sure to saturate your line but not having any excess drip off or build up. Once dry. No more wind knots because of curly Jew pubed braid!

This method does not degrade the line. Shellac is composed of denatured alcohol and bug poop. While the line is a petroleum product.

Go crawl around some local pawn shops. Chances are they will have a selection of big spinning rods-those are what people use for surf/pier fishing, and they're usually cheap. Put new line on them (as a rule the line in those are rotten to hell and will break with the first fish) and you've got the rod and reel covered.
Some basic fishing supplies (hooks, spare line, pliers, large sinkers, wire leaders, barrel swivels, etc), a small tackle box to put them in, a license, a bucket and maybe a pier net to help you lift bigger fish out of the water, and you're in business.

Actually yes I did see some 13 Fishing rods but no reels. In fact I don't think I saw any reels. There were some swimming senkos for ~$5 and I was highly considering but ended up not buying
>>
Am I autistic or is it smart to want all the same reel but just in different gear ratios? I think I've settled on the Pflueger Supreme (5.4, 6.4, 7.1 ratios). The only problem is that it only comes in right handed models. Should I suck it up and learn to use righty reels or is there another reel that fits this bill?
>>
>>1071673
Why would you ever need more than 2 spinning set ups?
>>
>>1071673
I just like the faster ones now but you could always have a couple in 5-7 and then one 8+ and run different rods and different line. If you really like the reel, go for it.

>>1071682
>2
Hahahaha. You could have 25 just for freshwater lakes all set up to run different baits. For beginners who are really getting into it, I always say it's good to have 3 before you even get into lures much. M with 8lb mono, UL with 4lb, and MH with 12--14lb.
>>
>>1071636
>imblying you have ever had female companionship
>>
>>1071694
I mean wouldn't memecasters do a better job for some of those tasks?
I figure a UL for panfish, ML for finesse fishing and trout, and a medium for wacky rigs. If your going to use bait for larger fish why not just get a 7'6" MH cat rod and put a conventional baitcaster on it?
>>
>>1071697
If you like casting reels, sure. I still use spinning reels for most stuff 1/4oz or less, especially casting into the wind or trying to fish near trees hanging over the water. And with the warm water here sometimes you have to go small even for big bass.

And with saltwater from the beach or pier, almost everybody uses spinning gear. But that might just be because they are poor minorities.
>>
>>1071694
But would I benefit more from different brands/models in different speeds? I figured it would make more sense to get used to one reel so I can really know it inside and out
>>
>>1071696
>tfw he has no clue
>>
>>1071735
All spinning reels are going to be about the same in a given price range. Some brands may be smoother but that's probably the only difference you'll notice assuming everything else is equal.

Opinions on the Sun Dolphin Sportsman bass boat? Anyone have experience with one?
>>
>>1071735
This >>1071739

Spinning reels are all basically the same. They all work the same. I guess if you had multiples of the same reel, you could have backup parts if something breaks. Or if you clean and rebuild them a lot, having 5 of the same reel will make it easier to remember which parts go where.

But if you have ever used a higher speed reel, you will notice that you can always go slower if you want a really slow retrieve. But with a lower ratio reel, you can only go so fast. That's why I prefer the faster ones now. Makes it easy to pick shit up fast and get it over weeds. But I always have to remember the speed because if I'm fishing a 5.1 for hours and switch to 6.4, I will run the bait too fast if I'm not paying attention. The lower ratios are better for hauling heavy fish I guess.

If you want to do multiple reels, you will get more benefit running different sizes with different line on different rods. If you get five 30's and put them all on the same 6'6" M Fast rod with 8lb mono but they have different ratios, it won't be very versatile.
>>
>>1071743
How? Are you casting directly into 25mph winds?

Your casting motion probably sucks. At least for me, the memecasters like a flat cast. If you put a high arc on it, you have a much higher chance of getting a backlash. Also seems like with casting reels, use a little more of the tip to throw the bait instead of swinging the whole rod.

And keep practicing. Lipless cranks like Rat-L-Traps are always super easy to cast since they are heavy and dense.

What weight is the rod? Medium heavy? Also the reel will give you suggestions if it says "14/200-17/170-20/130" or whatever.

The middle one on the reel is always a good choice. Also the rod will often have drag reccommendations.
>>
>>1071806
I'm honestly not sure what the action is. I'm going to go with heavy. I took a look at product page and it said it comes with 20lb test Stren mono so I'll probably just go with that.

Same concept to an extent. Once you've learned one memecaster you've learned them all. Of course a few have quirks, but it'll be the same basic technique for all of them.

Don't use ghost crabs. Rock crabs (the kind crawling under jetty boulders) work when fiddlers are scarce. Barnacles/Sand Fleas can catch them too but you'll get a lot less strikes.

Also, fuck this north wind. Might get lucky with spot or muller but this dirty water will keep the damn Spanish/pomps away.

Thanks. I always get a wry smile when I hear people wonder about 5.4:1 gear ratios being too slow, especially when most of my old ones are at 4:1 and the Yankee is geared at 1.9:1.
I actually fish a couple of these too. For the most part, I don't have an issue with lures going too slow-in fact, usually the opposite is true. It is the easiest thing in the world to get a good moderate cadence going that makes the lures work properly. I've never had a Zara spook walk across a lake so easily.

I have a couple questions that I've always been curious about,

What exactly does line test mean? If I have a rig with 6lb test mono and I hook an 8lb steelhead or pike or whatever will the fish be able to snap my line by it's sheer strength alone?

Next question, does setting your drag really loose when still fishing off the bottom work well or should you have it tight.
>>
>>1072226
These savage gear lures are getting out of hand.
>>
>>1072255
Line test is an approximate amount of pounds a line can hold before snapping. If a 10lb fish is caught on 8lb line you will still be able to land it as long as your drag is set for less than 8lb. You can drop your drag way down so that the fish can easily pick up the bait and run with it, just do not over tighten it when you go to set the hook.

Don't be surprised when other autists like weebs and furries start coming here.

How much do you wanna spend? Get a penn fierce surf combo if you're strapped for cash

Less than 200 preferably no more than 150. I had a daiwa before and wasn't too impressed with the reel desu
>>
>>1072377
I have 6k Penn Battle II on a 10' 6" tica rod. I can't remember what model the rod is atm. I'm by no means an authority on surf fishing, so idrk how good of a setup that is. I like it though.
>>
>>1072371
What pier? I'm going to Avalon tonight to try and get in on some Spanish or blues.
>>
>>1072396
Just get a Penn. Lots of nice combos in that range.

>>1072392
>hours
Ehh, after dealing with people all day at work I like some peace and quiet and will stop by a little lake for an hour. I think most people like some time to theirselves after having to be arround assholes the majority of the day.
>>
>>1072402
Cool. Is it like a heavier rod? I've been using a meme caster on a light 11' rod and have been very unsatisfied with it. I thought the length would help the cast but it seems more conducive for whipping like with a reel. Anyway the tip of the rod broke off somehow so I'm just going to use a spinner on a normal offshore rod I guess.
>>
>>1072412
>whipping
That's also why you have to match up your rods with the lure weight.

But yeah, I could understand that. Memecasters don't really prefer when you lob the bait like you would do on a long surf cast. Too easy for the speed of the lure to change in the air.

What baits (and colors) to use for black bass, in a clear water pond, during very hot weather?
Thanks.
>>
>>1072453
Gold is my all-around favorite. But sometimes when natural isn't working, chartruese will get action. For some reason I have done well with chartruese in clear water even though it seems totally against common sense. White is always decent too.
>>
>>1072453
Figure out what baitfish are in the pond and find a color that matches them. Something bright may work.

Also hit up a second Gander. Picked up a 2 pack of woolly buggers, 50yds of fly line backing, some SA Mastery Trout 4wt line, and a big bait binder at 70% off.

Dunno why this store was an extra 10% under the other.

First off, how hot is "very hot"? Very hot in northern France is not the same as "Very Hot" in southern Texas, after all.

As for general hot weather rules, go small, go deep, and match the baitfish in the lake if you can.

Why are kikeaks priced the way they are for what they are? It's like maybe a barrel worth of polymer.
>>

Yeah it's a MH rated for 2-8 ounces. I just looked and it's a Tica Surge. Does anyone else on here have one? I'm pretty happy with it. The guy at the shop I was at said that's what he uses besides his custom sticks. I figured it was a sales pitch, but I didn't really like anything else they had.

Anyone ever use this? I just tried it on a KVD 1.0 that was running sideways with the polomar and it started to run straight after this.

I haven't ever really had a problem with bigger crankbaits though, so I think it's mostly useful with smaller ones.
>>
>>1072357
Are you rigging cut bait to a EWG worm hook?
>>
Guys I'm maybe retarded. I was cleaning fish and got so damn tired after a long trip that I just said fuck it and threw a few fish whole into some double bagged freezer bags with ice and called it day.

My buddy says I'm an idiot because they won't be any good to eat. Other friend says they'll be fine if I cook them after cleaning.

Only problem is that won't really have time to clean them till tomorrow morning before work and really don't wanna eat them till this weekend. Should I just trash them and learn from my mistake?
>>
I think they will be fine considering my grandpa would literally throw whole salmon into the trunk of his Cadillac and drive for hours before cleaning them out at home and smoking them. I guess the fish might taste more fishy tmrw but you can always broil them up dude.
>>
>>1072402

>>
>>1072651

>>
>>1072690
I have left fish on ice for a couple of days before filleting them and they did not make me sick.
>>
>>1072695
Sorry, should of added this but on top of that they are in the freezer. Which is where I think I fucked up.
>>
>>1072697
Yeah that part was the fuck up. Are they frozen yet? If not take them out and put them on ice then cover with ice. Leave them in the refrigerator on in a cooler. If you are still uneasy about them maybe use them as bait (although check your local laws) for your next trip.
>>
>>1072697
>>1072699
Also I would not recommend freezing cleaned fish unless you have a vacuum sealer or flash freezer. If you have to freeze them and do not have those options then freeze them in water. They will not be as good but they can keep like that for 3 months or so.

That sounds terrible. I always autistically check the weather when I go on trips like that. I'd rather reschedule the trip than go and waste a bunch of time money.

So let's say I have a hypothetical friend in south-central Texas (San Antonio) who, due to certain hypothetical factors, is only able to do outdoor stuff when the sun goes down. Would it be possible for him to do some hypothetical fishing? If so what options would be available and how far would he have to travel?

Most people catfish at night. Bass will often bite well at night, I always do best for largemouth an hour before sunset to an hour after it gets dark. I have gotten lots of gar after dark too. And tons of saltwater predators feed at night.
>>
>>1072931
Do you need a headlamp when fishing at night? How do you see where you're casting?
>>
>>1072933
Headlamp is really useful. Lantern helps to see around you but it's still a bit more challenging than daylight fishing. It's difficult to see where your cast is going but practice and you will be fine.
