Okay sc/outs/, I know we get a lot of knife threads, but they're often consumer-orientated gear threads, and sometimes just pure shill threads.

What I'd like to do is for us to use this bread to share and discuss our OWN cutting tools as a system,

For example what you use each tool for, how they compliment each other, your line of thinking when acquiring, that kind of thing. Hopefully it'll generate a bit of discussion based on actual experience.

Mine,

>Khukri
Bought it in Nepal when I was in Kathmandu. It's a big ugly lump of steel. Had to grind a choil into it and soften the heel of the pommel to make it comfortable. Soft steel, sharpens easy but it's a bit annoying constantly having to deal with a flattened edge apex from whacking shit. I like it as a 'big knife' one knife solution but typically now I take a 1/2lb hatchet instead (harder steel, less real estate to keep sharp)

>Mora #1 (e jonnson)
Originally bought as it's a rarer e jonnson and I was curious to see any difference to a regular production Mora. Takes a great edge, love the light weight and barrel handle. Sheath is garbage and I intend to make a saya style wooden sheath for it.

>Bark River Imp
Was a lust buy at the time, but I quite like it. Stout blade on a four finger grip makes for a good carving knife. I like the A2 steel and full convex is nice but fragile on knotty/gnarled wood.

>Farm and Field Sodbuster
O2 tool steel, tight backlock, love the old school feel, very comfortable knife and takes a great edge.

>SAK
Probably my first knife and over 20 years old. My sheeple friendly EDC. Love the saw on it, too.

>Spyderco UKPK ELMAX
Curious to try ELMAX, verdict still out. Great little knife though, I love the lightweight FRN and wire clip on these spydies, just disappears in your pocket.

>Leatherman Juice S2
Pliers are useful okay.

I am in northern forests, and use my knives primarily for wood working and a bit of food prep. I do not hunt.

I usually take either the Mora or BRK as my primary knife, paired with a hatchet and/or saw. If I take the khukri the axe stays at home but I'll take the F&F for small knife tasks.

I think I'd like to try a leuku style knife next, curious to see what a longer blade length (without retarded thick blade stock) and scandi grind together can accomplish .
>>
>>1068665
Hey idiot you need more fucking knives, wtf are you gonna do when they get dull and you dont even have a spare?

Fuck, its like nobody ever plana ahead these days. I bet you're just a casual anyways and never use a blade until it gets dull and you have to throw it out.
>>

Khukri´s are really good at chopping heads off chickens. holding the rabbit by its hind legs until it stops struggling and whacking it with the spine also good.

i really want to get my own khukri, only had the pleasure of using one that one time, tried buying the condor one but it didnt work out due to import.

This is a short review of the Cudeman MT5 or 120M.
I fell for the Cudememe about two weeks ago and since I was in need of a nice stainless outdoors knife with all the restrictions and advantages of stainless steel for my regions weather, I decided on the recently shilled Cudememe MT5.

The knife and leather sheath come in a nice cardboard Box with all the info required, and no papers or instructions were included. I think this is a relatively good idea since you should do your research before buying something, and also since I bought it from Ebay from a seller 'mundoregals2011' who are a legit distributor of Cudeman (Cudeman says that for their lifetime warranty, you should contact the seller you bought it from and I'm blatantly shilling mundoregals2011 because of their quick response time), the bill for the knife is on Paypal/debit card.

The knife and sheath fit relatively well together, there isn’t any knifeplay, because the bolster fits perfectly in the sheath. The sheath itself is made out of quality leather, I can tell by the texture, the work on the leather and the smell of the leather itself. The red stitching on the leather go well together with the red lining on the micarta handles.

A dark t-shirt is more effective than sunscreen, but a white T-shirt is not.
Wool
Water
More water
A source for water
Wool
Head gear
Shemgah made from wool
Sun glasses
Something to cover your neck
And more wool since it's gonna be around 50F at night

How feasible is this in reality? Would the salt in a man made lake gradually dissipate as time goes on? We gotta look into this.

If a natural lake, that means it's connected to its watershed and I bet having saltwater feeding into fresh is a bad idea. additionally since it will be fed freshwater from its tributaries and rainfall, keeping it saltwater would be hard.

If a reservoir with somehow all run-off blocked off, which is unlikely, good luck convincing the state to not utilize it as an actual reservoir for freshwater supply.

So it's not a problem of wasting water, the problem is first figuring out how to contain all this saltwater from damaging local wildlife.

..after that the problem is still wasting water for such a thing. Again, water is a valuable resource, and the only reason they build reservoirs to begin with is to keep a supply of freshwater, fisheries just happen to develop well in them.

Hey out. I am a country boy kind of stuck in the city. I'm former army current gov employee. I want to quit and work for myself. Currently I make 110k a year. I don't expect to make nearly that out in the sticks but what are some ways to make good money living away from the city?

Who even buys Crisco?

>what are some ways to make good money living away from the city?

A: Being a commuter.
B: Being a government subsidized industrial farmer.
C: Making good booze.
D: Pimp.
E: Drug dealer.
F: Doctor.
G: Lawyer.
H: Own a grocery store/fast food restaurant.

You know, the typical things. In the sticks, most of those are nearly the same in money making.
>>
>>1066854

Carpentry, leatherworking, tailoring, bowmaking, farming/ranching, blacksmithing, making alcohol (fairly high initial investment to do legally but still very viable with out-of-pocket and loans) off the top of my head. Also possible is making doodads and trinkets then selling them locally at a shop or roadside + through an online shop. With some imagination and a can-do attitude the sky's the limit.

It's like you don't even /pie/.

Found "FSD30W" (pic related), but it can only be ordered from china. So what else is there to charge your mobile phone or ham-radio? Solar Panels?

How much do you use your phone? Is a spare battery not enough?
>>
>>1066760
while using GPS and Maps on a phone can easyly exceed battery capacity, I'm more interessted in recharging a radio. no problem if you have a car (12V) but innawoods...
>>

Anker is a brand with a good reputation. The idea is that you charge a battery by day and then charge your gear by night from the battery.

Problem being that these rigs aren't really ready for prime time. You'll stretch the life of your battery a bit but never keep up with what these devices demand. You'll do better investing the lbs in a bigger battery and charging in town every few days.

It's a great idea but the technology just isn't there yet.

Now, one scenario I haven't tried is turning off everything, especially the radios: Bluetooth, wifi, cell, and GPS. I mean, I keep wifi and Bluetooth off unless I'm using them, but /out/ is when you need GPS.

The Kindles have incredible battery life. Obviously, they don't do all that much compared to a smartphone but they might be efficient enough for solar to be viable.

Otherwise you'll have to do what the rest of us are doing: pack a battery, be sparing about your usage, and wait for the technology to get better.

I like MTB. I don't ride as much as I'd like. I bought a new Diamondback like three years ago and have ridden it less than 8 times.

The sport gets more hate than it deserves. All the riders I know are conservationists to some extent and it's not like we're the ones cutting shortcuts down switchbacks through the brush...

Is it true that almost any and almost every knife, except the cheapest of the cheap, can be made razor sharp with a right tool and profiling/reprofiling? And that the only actual argument against cheap mystery steel knives is that the more well made knives stay sharp for longer periods of time?
I've had cheap and expensive cs and ss knives and generally the high quality ones stay sharper longer, no other quality difference regarding the blade itself.
24 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>1066292

If the blade actually has been heat treated, you can sharp it to shaving sharp. Depending on the steel, others will dull much quicker than others. The ones that stay sharper longer, usually need more time to sharpen.

One reason why I like 1095. Takes a edge pretty quick and holds it. Also like Aus8, vg10 too. Might pick up a 5160 blade.

I was watching Backcountry and despite being pretty retarded if you view it from someone with actual /out/ skills and or experience, it's kinda accurate if you look at it from a normie (for the lack of better word) pov. Anyway I don't consider myself either, I'm somewhat in the middle but I live in a relatively small country so you only shit yourself if you're pretty fucking retarded(it happens frequently to many people tho).
Either way I digress, my question is, how easy is to get yourself lost in a big wooded country like the US/Canada for instance?

Also, even though it doesn't happen very often I have read that there was a surge in bear attacks lately (maybe it's just fear mongering) but is it a concern for some of you guys there?

Thanks if you take the time to reply

Every year in Idaho a dozen faggots from back east or local women wander down a trail and disappear or die of dehydration or drive off a cliff. It makes for good entertainment. Oh same thing happens when Idaho faggots go east or to California and get nogged.

I'm new as shit to camping so I have a potentially stupid question. I'm assuming it's illegal to just go camping anywhere you want, but how do hunters and people who are way out in the wilderness camp if they aren't near a campground? Do you just have to hunt near campgrounds? I'm in WA state so there's plenty of state parks and BLM land nearby, I was kinda hoping to be able to go out and find a spot to camp alone, away from people.

google "dispersed camping"

short version:
>blm, national forest
okay 99% of the time if you're not blocking a road and >100' from water
>national parks, state parks
varies from park to park if it's allowed, and how far from established areas you have to get before camping
>>
>>1065202

Thanks anon, the sticky linked to a website that called it "wild camping" and said it was illegal so I was a bit confused

Assuming you are not building bonfires and cutting down trees you probably won't be noticed.
