A long time ago I asked some questions about shavehorses in general and was planning to make one suitable to keep outdoors.

This week I finally got around to building one. I bought the lumber months ago and when I brought it home I realized it was so wet with preservative it would twist up in no time, so I clamped them all together and let them dry for months. It's super simple, made out of PT 2x4s, deck screws, and a fence hinge. I think I put about $25 into this overall, half of that was for the galvanized hinge.

First I made the base. I just cut the studs with a miter saw, then planed the top a bit so that the top face was 90 degrees to the sides - I did this so I could have a flat reference so I could drill the pivot holes straight so that the arms wouldn't be all crooked and retarded.

Then added the vise parts. I made it with adjustibility in mind because I had no idea what ergos I would prefer since I never even used or seen a shaving horse in person. All I had to go on were pictures on the internet.

Made a seat out of scraps. Its a friction fit but can be moved down between the studs with some persuasion. While in use my fat ass keeps it in place and doesn't move at all.

#84-"Moving" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>855808

Still no time for fishin. I just want to get this move done with so I can relax again. Then maybe I will take a walk down the street and check out those canals. I'll probably try and get a bunch done today and just say "fuck it" and go out around sunset tonight for a couple hrs. But then tomorrow I have to grab the trailer from Uhaul and go balls out.

the experience I have with moving is TRY not to enjoy your life for the next week. Every time I've moved I end up dicking around and there are still 90 boxes in the living room 3 months later.

Better not head anywhere til everything put away, boyo.

Hey guys.
Not much of an outdoors person, but I always wanted to wander around the areas of far west Texas. I just want to go alone because I feel like people are too bitchy about simply walking outside.

Got any good places to visit?
Precautions to before going out there would be nice too.

>>
Big Bend for sure, beautiful for that type of landscape and big enough to get lost in. Most of Texas is owned and not accessible to the wanderer. Plan your water as it is common for people to get lost and die of dehydration in the park.

Hi /out/,

I was hoping to get some advice and create some useful discussion about snakes.

Today while I was out in the bush (NSW, Australia) I saw what I believe was an Eastern Brown Snake and although I was walking at a steady pace and I was just under a meter from it, the snake recoiled and got ready to attack me.

It's common to see a snake every now and then where I live, I remember I came out of the swimming hole on a rainy day to find fang marks on my body from green tree snakes (possibly) that were in the water.

How do I protect myself against snakes? Is the method of tying off the bitten limb proven effective? What encounters have you had?

Cheers
(Pic unrelated - going up to Avalanche Peak near Arthurs Pass, NZ)

>How do I protect myself against snakes?
if they're a major problem i'd recommend a revolver with .410 birdshot shells, but
>ausfailia
so i guess pay attention to your feet and don't get bit?

>Is the method of tying off the bitten limb proven effective?
not really. a "light occlusive band to impede lymph flow" was what i was taught in medic school, but it's not going to do much

>What encounters have you had?
not many. mountains are thick with buzzworms, but i've been lucky.
>>
>>858069
Brown snakes are fucking cunts. Not like those based af tiger snakes

remember that most snakes are just trying to intimidate you so back away slowly and you should get away fine. brown snakes can be aggressive and chase you though, so I'd recommend being extra careful with them.

If you're concerned I would recommend buying some thick sea to summit gaiters. You see a lot of bush walkers wearing them. supposedly, because of their small fangs, the thick waterproof gaiters help with most snake bites and its rare they'll get you through them.

Personally, I just hike in loose-ish pants which I've been told is good for snake bites because they'll more than likely latch onto the fabric, avoiding your leg. Hopefully I dont ever have to test this theory though.

if you do get bitten, don't move and call an ambulance immediately (I'd recommend getting ambulance cover at about $10 a quarter - in Vic anyway. it'll save you potentially 1000's if you do need a helicopter or ambulence out of trouble). Was told this by an ER nurse recently, not sure of the veracity, but getting cellphone service and talking to 000 is definitely a good first action
>>
>>858077
jesus christ some americans are autistic. you don't need to shoot everything.

There are special snake bite pretection gaiters that students had to wear when I was a camp instructor. If you're really worried, invest in some of those.

Who here is or is interested in becoming a wilderness firefighter?
This sounds like a viable career path for me, you get paid to camp outside, develop bonds with your team members, and break a sweat each day. And unlike city firefighters, you just focus on fires and don't have to deal with people so much.

I'm considering doing it if I can't get into my industry after college. If it turns out I got beat out by H-1B faggots I'm gonna go for it. My dad used to be a wilderness firefighter in college and he made it sound fun

Not having to deal with very many people is a plus too
>>
>>857392
Yeah I had a similar job in a conservation corps where we camped outside and chainsawed trees down all day. I previously didn't think that I was cut out for that level of physical work but I saw myself getting stronger over the weeks and it was incredibly fun.
Also i'm a history major so I don't have much choice.
>>
>>857399
I'd love to get into the California conservation corps but the deadlines mean I'll have to skip some uni

Plus the application process seems competitive as hell and I have no real experience with wilderness labor or scouting or whatever they want to see

If Biotechnology doesn't work out for me then sawing trees doesn't seem too bad. I don't need a luxurious lifestyle

Hello /out/.

I am planing somewhat of an experience. I am going to for the first time of my life take my tent and go and set up camp somewhere in the forest alone for about a week for the first time of my life.

So I have som questions, what do I need to think of when setting up camp? And what things do I need to take with me? I live in Scandinavia and I live in the south so there are no predators here, the most dangerous animals we can find here is homeless junkies but I am not concerned.

So far I have written down:
Food & water
Axe / knife
A shit ton of books to pass the time and I like it
Lighter
Light source I can use inside the tent
Alarmclock (I will still be going to school but I study on flexible times)

What more should I bring? What should I be thinking of when chosing a spot for my tent?

Also, what kind of food should I bring since I wont be having acess to a fridge or freezer. A loaf of bread will make it of course, but when it comes to meat its only canned goods that's the deal?
>>

Jerky. Eggs (dont need refrigeration). Beans (dried). Some soup stock cubes. dried soup veggies. Trail mix. Dehydrated fruit. Nuts (or something similarly high in protein and easy to carry). Chocolate bars.

Are you camping in bear country? If so, get familiar with the steps to take in order to prevent bears from getting to your stuff.

Also, toilet paper. Wet wipes. Toothpaste.

Enjoy and don't go to class stinky.
>>
>>856567

There are no predators here where I live, the bears and wolfes are 1000 km north of here, I have seen foxes though. So I don't have to worry about predators.

And what do you mean by eggs? Should I eat them raw? Or should I bring some kind of improvisied kitchen? Or am I suppose to cook over an open fire?

>Enjoy and don't go to class stinky.

Haha, no I will shower at the gym before I go to school.

Alright/out/ its happening.

I've talked about it here before, and I'm preparing to do it. I just got to order new motorcycle tires. I'm going to move to Tennessee with 200 dollars cash in my pocket, and everything I possibly can fit on my little motorcycle.

I have done my research and I'm planning on heading around the Knoxville area. Or maybe more north, anyone from the TN area wanna give advise for me to know what kind of work there is?

Thats my only issue, if I don't find work in 2 weeks max, I'm screwed and this experiment fails. Knowing what jobs to look for is critical at this point.

I can do general labor shit, painting, sheet rock, framing. I would prefer to stay away from big chain stores because the work is more soul sucking then swinging a hammer in 90degree weather.

>TLDR types of jobs to be easily had in eastern Tennessee.

Hello all, like everyone here I have an affinity for the outdoors and the peace of mind gained from being secluded in wilderness; however, well-made, good equipment will always come at precipitous (though, warranted) costs- therefore I ask, what are the best websites or time of year (sales promotions, Black Friday, and so on) to find high-quality outdoor gear on sale?

Most major retailers like REI, Moosejaw, Backcountry.com all have clearance/discount pages where they put last year's models and colors.

Another good option is geartrade, which is all second hand gear.

Offline look around for gear swaps and consignment stores.

I would recommend driving up to Fort William from Glasgow then heading to the fishing village of Mallaig. From there you could take ferry to Skye or the small Isles or just check out the beaches.
Have you checked out the North West 500
