I want to live in the wild. Im not a survivalist, but I want to live in the wilderness. How can I prepare myself? What activities should I learn to survive? I know this is not a game, and I don't like the typical TV shows. Any advice?
Get out of here, stalker.
Ever actually been /out/? What gear do you have? Can you fish, hunt, and know what pants and mushrooms to forage? Can you build a shelter? Can you start a friction fire? Do you scare easily in the dark when alone?
how about not post the same fucking inane delusional thread as every other loser that comes here to post hurr durr i want to live in teh wild to escape all my problems
Does anyone know where I can buy one of these water bottles in the United States? My friend purchased it in Canada...it has no branding on it.
>>869871
Since it has what looks like Tlingit artwork on it, it may be one of those advertisement gifts that companies make. "We put your company name here on this water bottle and you get 500 for $10" sort of the same thing they do with pens at the bank at the front desk.
You could also take a clear picture of it on a white background and upload it to google image and see if you get a hit that's way.

Anybody here do it? I've been chasing all week and finally flew this morning. I'll probably get up one more time this week. Pic related is late this morning from the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. A few more pics will follow.
This one is from a few years ago. Had I had a better camera with me on that day, I would have stood a chance of winning the photo contest with that one. I always have only my phone with me when those good pictures pop up.
Serious question here. How do you guys deal with that uneasiness when your exploring some where new(or in general) by yourself.
I get the "out of comfort zone" stuff but is that really it?
the people I know just don't go out into the woods without a gun.
Where I tend to hike noone is there. More afraid I might injury myself then running into a stranger. To be honest just get comfortable enjoy the area. I normally look at trees and ID them as I walk. You get use to it. I carry bear spray as wolves, bears, cougars and lynx are very common here among other animals. No need for a firearm. I also carry a Esee 3 but thats more for harvesting cheeky nibbles as I walk.

I'm an ignoramus when it comes to tent buying.
Looking for a sub $250 ultra-light for some 2-3 day outings.
Guide these commercially novice hands to something good, kindly.
Tarp, cot, rope, stakes, pillow, sleeping bag, mre. I'll go back to /k/ now...
>>869600
assuming you're in america, someone mentioned that they just scored that BA Fly Creek for about 250 at the rei garage sales.
>>869608
America, with an REI a short distance away. I may swing by next week to see what's going on.
Do they usually leave gear behind? How does that work?
>>869595
certain things get left behind. mostly caribeners and straps. you can't help but leave them sometimes on a repel. I throw away straps, but in my opinion left carabiners are a pay it forward thing.
you may find some nuts every once in a while, but if their owners couldn't get rhem out I doubt you can. and I am not going to use a nut that was in a crack for god only knows how many thermal expansions.
>>869598
Do you have time to answer some other retard questions made by someone who likes the sport itself but has zero experience or knowledge about it?
>>869599
I'm sure most climbers would be glad to answer questions from somebody who is genuinely interested.
can you guys help me identify this mushroom please, philippines
>>869362
Show us the underside. Bottom
>>869362
lol you posted this in the mushroom general, and got told what any sensible person will tell you:
it's a shitty picture of the top of a mushroom, taken at a distance. Take a picture that doesn't suck, then post asking for an ID.
There is a general thread for a reason; this does NOT deserve its own thread, you cancerous cunt.

I hope you get killed by the murder gangs roving your country under your idiotic president
First time at /out/, and haven't been hiking or doing anything related for the last 2-3 years.
But I am now in need of a pair of trousers. What's your thought on Fjällrävens Keb Trousers (pic related)?
They will mostly be used for fishing trips, weekends in the autumn and spring forest (pretty activly, not just walking), etc.
>>869358
sorry OP this is not against you
but why the fuck do people have so much difficulty with pants? i swear there are 3 new pants threads a day.
Very good trousers but totally overpriced.
>>869364
lol.
No I hear you that's probably true, every board has their typical "which should I buy", "how should I lift"..
It might be because most people will have a bunch of different jackets and shirts already, pants like these aren't really needed or wanted in everyday-life by most people
Hello /out/. Can someone help me identify this plant and is it edible? thanks!
Unsure of the species name, but we used to have them all around the neighborhood. Poisonous, don't eat. Won't kill ya, but it'll make you wish you were dead.
>>869126
What part of the world?
>>869126
Just eat it.
Haven't seen a food thread in a while.
Going camping in Colorado in December.
What are some good, easy to prep meals when /out/ in the snow?
Ready to eat meals, just add water meals, or something I can cook with a pocket stove. Anything really.
>>869008
Ramen noodles, without the flavor packet, with a plethora of dehydrated vegetables and meat you can make 100s of recipes. That way you can add your own spices and sauces. You can make anything from spaghetti to mac-n-cheese with plain ramen noodles.
You can also use a thermal cooker to save on fuel, but you'll need to carry a little extra weight, but it can double as a container to pack stuff in, depending on how and what you make it from. It can literally just be some clothing, sleeping bag, or towels you wrap up your covered cook pot with. Once you bring the soup/stew to a boil, you shove into that insulation and time it. When the cooking time is over, take it out and eat, or reheat to a boil if it still needs more time. You save massive amounts of fuel that way.

>Colorado in December
Shit anon, you can bring stuff that needs to be kept cold and not even deal with a cooler. No need for ready to eat food! Sausage and eggs, hot coffee, falling snow....so comfy. I can't wait for snow!
One of my favorite camp dishes is a variation on plain ol' Bisquick pancakes. The trick is to add blueberry muffin mix into the pancake batter. Trust me, they're the best goddamn pancakes you'll ever have on a camping trip.
What do you wear on your legs when it's like -25°c?
I just bought some heavyweight merino base layers, but what else should I get?
I'll be in Scandanavia for the winter
Get a coverall like this one.

And some boots like those

Also: mittens and under-gloves.
A good hat.
A balaclava
Hey /out/
Do you have any rituals for after you kill an animal? None of that /x/ bullshit but a little saying or a moment.
I usually mutter the whole ashes to ashes thing and have a moment to appreciate it all.
I'm not religious but the saying makes sense to me. I've tried looking for native/aboriginal saying for animals but haven't found anything, so if anyone knows any, I'd love to hear them.
What about you /out/? Lets share.
>>868670
I drink the blood, devour the meat and wear the skin on my body.
I just smear blood on my face and go hang out at circle-k and stare hard at people.
> mfw they just look away
>>868670
>I'm not religious but I've tried looking for native sayings.
Get the fuck out.
Thank the animal for contributing to your life, as that is life. For one to live, another must die. Realize that when you die, your soul will return from whence you came, and so will your body render itself down to feed other things. Ashes to ashes is actually a very fitting idea to ruminate on.
Trying to wreathe this in psuedo-spiritual native bullshit is insulting to natives and to yourself. Your ancestors' experiences are as valid as theirs. Don't patronize other peoples just because modern society still clings to the noble savage we wuz shaymans and shieet narative.
Just realize that the animal gave itself so you can continue living, and make you stronger. That's all it takes to "honor" them.
When I kill an animal or have a good day of fishing, (after the elation of success wears off) I just take a moment to be thankful for what I've received.

Remember to dispose of your snakeheads properly! And by properly I mean kill them and throw it in the nearest bush.

I'm sick of dealing with real life responsibilities and problems. I need to get some line wet for more than an hour after work.

Here's just a bunch of random UL stuff.
For the soft plastics as well as small jigheads and underspins, Bass Pro doesn't keep them by the rest of the larger stuff like you would expect. There is a seperate aisle with all crappie and panfish stuff. Dick's is similar too. So if you are wondering where the <2" grubs are, look for the crappie and panfish section instead of searching through the soft plastic aisle.
How many times do you have to stab a fish after you land it? Sometimes I need to stab large fish up to 7 or 8 times throughout the head and body to get them to stop moving, but I've often seen other people not stab their fish at all.
Is stabbing your catch once you have it in hand something that's just carried over from hunting and it's not necessary for fishing, or is there a number of stabs rule to go by? Everyone in my family stabs fish and game, but it seems that most people have forgotten it's necessary to stop movement.
>>868358
You can normally bash the head real good and that will put them out. Just remember you may still get a couple twitches even when they are 100% ded. I always try and go right by the back of the brain with sneks and the knoife goes through the spine and everything so they are gone within a second but sometimes there is a random flop a few min later.
I think it happens with basically all animals. Their brain will be disconnected and shut down completely but some random electrical signal still goes through them and can trigger a muscle.
Is a bear bag even necessary on the Appalachian Trail this time of year? I've got the bag and paracord, but I'm wondering if I'd be fine just leaving my food in my pack in my tent.
Bear bag is so people have something to find when they are looking for your body.
>>866977
On the application trail, I'd say absolutely.
Critters ranging from mice to bears are accustomed to hikers leaving/feeding them human food, so they are much more attracted to the smell of it. You can thank the meme factor of the AT for that, and would have less to worry about in a more remote/less traveled trail.
A bear bag takes less then 5 minutes to put up and weighs less then a pound. Just use the thing.
