Hey /out/, I'm looking for a place to get cozy pictures of nature from, mostly woods and other good stuff.
I hope this is the right place to do these things.
thanks in advance <3

Sleeping bag and mat thread.
Hey /out/.
Just getting my gear together after finishing my degree in the UK.
Atm I need a mat and a sleeping bag being on a tight budget.
My equipment so far:
>robens mythos solo (tent- got it after helping someone to move)
>moorhead 70+10 SMS
>GoFriend® 3 Litres
happy for any other tips especially from guys from the UK as I have a national trust card, live in Bristol and would like to walk and camp in the area
Tbh I don't know their exact pricing, but just get a super basic thermarest. Mine's been great for the past 10 years
>>851815
I recently got a thermarest prolite plus, large size, for 80 dollars on sale (normally 110). I like it very much. They are definitely not the cheapest for the performance but they are reliable and comfy.
>>851835
The prolite plus is a great mat for lightweight insulation, probably the warmest self inflating for the price. But its worth splashing out on the mat - i used to have a cheap vango trek mat and 700 fill down bag, but i spent the 130 odd an x-lite and for everything but scottish winter i use a 300 fill bag (would recommend rab ascent 300. Fairly heavy but durable as shit for down). Worth getting a good bag, but for warmth and weight an extra 50 quid on your mat will get you a lot further than 50 on the bag.
The amount you spend on the tent ahould reflect how comfortable you want to be, both hikimg with it and sleeping in it. A fivers worth of tarp is pretty light but a horrible night unless its gorgeous out. Similarly a hi gear tent is gonna be significantly heavier than the msr or wild country tent it copied.
So I found this bird in the road a few hours back. I was certain, had he stayed there, he would get dead. Originally I was riding my bike, and got close to him thinking he was a pine cone or something. Turns out he was a bird of course. So I looked at him to see what his deal was. As far as I can make out, he can move and chirp, but he doesn't move far, or well, and has a broken wing. Mind you, this is all assumption from a guy that knows shit all about birds.
He keeps staring up at this tree and chirping, and that's just it. I tried slicing open a water bottle to the bottom so he had a small water dish, but he refuses to drink from it, and seems afraid of me. I've come back to check on him a few times. I picked him up and moved him off the road, about 5 feet from the road into the grass behind my neighbor's outer fence. I feel like he's just going to die no matter what, and probably not well. It makes me feel shitty and somehow responsible for some reason. What should I do?
That first picture was one of the first times I visited him, and this second one is a little later before moving him, though he seemed really agitated, I think a car scared him or something.
Oh. And he took a couple shits after being moved. Looks white with a blue cap. Weirdest shit I've seen.
I once accidentally intentionally shot a bird out of a tree with a BB gun when i was kid.
I mean, i intentionally shot at it, but i didn't really consider that i was actually going to hit it. It fell out of the tree like a stone. I just stood there with my mouth open for a good minute and then had a look around to check no one witnessed my heinous crime less i have kill them with my BB gun too. The bird looked dead as fuck. I was already considering how i'm going to explain this one at the gates of heaven, then suddenly the little fucker just jumped up and flew off like nothing happened.
What does the life of a US park ranger involve? What are the requirements for the job? Can one do it part time/seasonally?

That or preventing retards from starting forest fires because they don't know how to do anything outdoors
Can anyone help me /out/? I'm looking for recommendations or personal experience on this sort of tents. I'm 1,76 and usually hike around the pyrenees and potentially alps
Ideally:
>less than 150£
>less than 2,5 Kg
>actually fits 2 people which could at least sit comfortably inside
>usable porch for cooking
>actually waterproof ground (I´ve read that the Banshee 200 struggles with this)
>good ventilation for reduced or non existent condensation
I´ve got in mind something like the Vango Banshee 200, the Zephyros II from Terra Nova or the Gossamer II from Jack Wolfskin but I'm undecided and lack experience on this sort of tents to make a move.
You're going to want a 3 person tent to "comfortably" fit 2 people in it. Especially if you're thinking of a girl, because you're both going to want to face the same way, and torso/Arms take up a wider space than legs.
I rock a 2 person tent when I go solo. I'm 6'3" and have to find the sweet spot angle to keep my feet or head from touching the tent wall, and collecting condensation on my down sleeping bag.
Other than tall problems, my tent is perfect size. I keep all my gear that I don't want wet in the extra space, and the rest of my pack/boots under the vestibule.
I can say for certain there is no way you could fit another body in there comfortably. Not even a child sized body.
That being said, look into a eureka midori 3. I believe it will meet your budget and weight.
>>850648
The tent looks pretty solid, cheers!
Which one do you use? I'm looking for a 2 man tent because I mostly hike with just one mate atm, realistically I wouldn`t mind having to sleep on my side because otherwise we don´t fit and luckily he´s quite short anyway
So I´ve been having a look at the european page of Eureka! and I'm pretty sure they renamed it to KeeGo (which sounds extremely stupid), the price of 150 pounds seems a bit to steep for the final weight at 2,6 Kg although I like the dimensions I could settle for something smaller and lighter, any other American companies or companies not so well known that might have quality products?

Alright guys, let's do some brainstorming.
Let's find well paying ($60k+) entry salary outdoor (& related) jobs. Could be straight outta highschool gigs as well as ones which require degrees. Being on a the crossroads myself, I know a lot of us could benefit from this very much. Well paid /out/doorsmen: let yourselves be known, come out of the woodwork! Other guys intersted: do some research and share it here!
"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." - Some ancient chink
Will be bumping with pics of AK (where I'd love to work)
>$60k, entry level, not in an urban center.
That is going to be hard to find and I would imagine any job fitting that description would have high competition for the position. And then you have to realize there probably wouldn't be much room to advance while still being /out/.
Currently looking into becoming a seaman. Going to a Maritime Academy and all that shit. It does pay well + you get up to six months off a year (depending on the contract). Here's the payscale for MSC. Bear in mind one graduates already as a Third Officer.
https://sealiftcommand.com/payscales/
I would be happy as fuck if I could find some /out/ job here that allowed me to do 10k dollaridoos, not a burger tho.
Anyone else keeping bees /out/ there?
my parents keep bees.
they have been doing it for only 3 or 4 years
had 8 hives last year
4 died during winter
2 more died during spring
once they loose the last 2 they are giving up
I want bees wicked bad once I get out of the city or find a building that will let me put a hive on the roof.
>>846665
Why are they dying?
>>846645
I think some people in the /diy/ gardening general keep bees.
I asked a girl to come with me on a backpacking trip in the next few weeks. I asked her how much gear she has and she doesn't have a ton, but she has a sleeping bag. I was considering just having her carry her sleeping bag and foodstuff and a small cook set for us because it's lightweight, while I carry tent/Only problem is I only have a MSS, no tent. Now, she and I rent dating but I am hoping this trip can get us real physical, if you know what I'm saying.
So I need a lightweight tent for boning in. Definitely waterproof, and I need to be able to keep her warm (girls get way out of the mood when they're cold). What do you recommend?
>Pic related is what I hope to achieve
>>844725
man you sound like a sad dude. like seriously
>girls get way out of the mood when they're cold
I sincerely hope you don't get a root
But anyway;
just buy something ~2kg that sleeps two people and has good reviews online.
Check what her sleeping bag is and what it is rated. If its some $15 bag rated at 15 degrees then its obviously useless. If its 3kg and huge then shes going to struggle carrying it.
Check what pack she has, make sure its big enough and not going to break (been there before and ended up having to carry her pack in my arms while I carried my own pack on my back)
How longs the walk? what kind of region? has she hiked before? does she have footwear? what is she expecting from this? remember that if the ground is below 10 degrees celcius then you'll definitely need some kind of insulation mat under the sleeping bags, you can get cold mighty quickly without insulation.
Pls don't be an unnecessary creeper OP. Treat her right
>>844725
I think most tents will fit your criteria.
If she gets cold, try to tell her a humorous anecdote or witty story
>>844729
I hate that the world thinks so many men are creepers now.
OP is fine, just does not have much experience with women.
Doing some testing, evaluation and design of multitools for a university engineering project. I made a survey to get some feedback on the subject. I would appreciate any responses. Otherwise feel free to post your opinions on how you think they could be improved or any issues you have with them.

Too small too expensive for what it can do
Hey /int/
let's talk about food.
Going with a friend on a 2 weeks trip to Norway.
We're gonna take mostly rice, canned meat and disgusting protein stuff with us.
Any other good ideas that are weight-efficient?
I'm not a hyper-expert on long outdoor trips, doing mostly weekend-trips that's why I'm asking here.
As bait I got some eyecandy from the french alps earlier this summer for you.
>copy and paste a thread
>don't even bother to change the board name
I'm mildly insulted
I'm interested in this too. Still learning how to move past weekend trips so any advice would be appreciated.
Fuck off, /int/.
But in all seriously, Scho-Ka-Kola is good, lightweight, keeps you awake if you need it too. Been keeping Jerry awake on stag since the 30s.
Why do most people hike fast as fuck like the goal is just finishing the trail?
This is why I really don't like going /out/ with groups...I like to take my time and stop and go off trail to look at birds or wild flowers or other things. I really don't get the point of hiking just for the sake of covering distance, but maybe someone can explain?
>>855200
Same, i hike alone so i don't have to worry about catching up to someone or them catching up to me.
While I also prefer to hike slowly some people utilize trails as a form of cardio which is why some people run on trails
>>855200
God this post reminded me of a friend from the Caribbean I went camping with last year.
>first time hiking with friends, not alone
>hiking day comes, we split weight evenly everything is going well during the drive
>get on the trail (mind you it's a 3 hour hike only to the site, and 3 hours back to the parking lot) and suddenly the one friend puts himself in his zone
>"have to keep up the pace or the night will reach us" (it's 2pm at the time)
>give him benefit of the doubt, think to myself it's better to let him play leader instead of causing unnecessary turmoil
>only times we stop in the trail is when he wants to take pictures of something specific, but never stops for any of us when we want to do it or when we are drinking some water
>pretty much forces us through the scenery of the hike, just so we can get to the site early
it was honestly a pretty shitty walk but I was being very optimistic since it was my first time with companions.
cont.
Why is sleeping outside with no mat so bad?
I just slept outside in a sleeping bag with no mat and it feels like my inner organs hurt. I definitely shouldn't do this again, but what is actually the cause?
Is it the ground draining my body warmth or the irregularities of the ground that affect me so much?
humans are squishy, the ground is not
Hard on joints and our natural skeletal alignments
You've slept with a pillow on a soft-ass mattress or mat every night of your life, your body (read: muscles) can't handle not having it.
Weeks later and they're still a huge problem. You cannot be outside for more than a minute before they attack. We should be having some 50-40 degree nights by this time of the year, but it's just been heat and rain and humidity. Feels like got dang florida...
Last years winter was pretty mild. Would not be surprised if it's going to be another snowy one. Cannot wait till these buggers are dead.
Sooooo, where are you located and uhh, what's your goddamn point?
I am currently /out/ in rim country Arizona. No mosquitoes and hardly any bugs. Do bugs hibernate for the winter once the nights hit the low 60s?

Sittin at home enoying the weekend, thinking about how chatterbaits continue to be a meme. I wonder where I should go and not get bites on the chatterbaits today. On the upside, the water should start cooling off bit by bit in the next couple months. The largemouth I got last night was bretty gud as far as these small lake shore fish go. I need to find where those knoife fish are at.
