Is there national forest south of SF that allows open wood fires when dispersed camping?
Why does southern California suck so hard?
>>868952
The USA sucks bud.
>>868952
California sucks in general.
Our terrible drought means even a match could light everything up like a tinderbox.
Hello /out/. I'm looking to build a small portable boat or kayak to carry with me to remote lakes in the mountains next to where I live. Anybody have any suggestions on what to build? Looking to make something as compact as the one shown in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_K4GUSvGqs
How much weight are you willing to carry? I made one of these a while back, but adult size. Weighs a ton with the materials I used but I overbuilt it and was being a cheapskate.
http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/00/DM2000/articles/folding/eva.html
Also made something like your picture once but longer. It works OK, but I'd stick to flat water with it, and it only folds in half so it's not really that protable.
PVC Pipe Kayak

I'm looking to carry around 200 pounds. I need to make something lightweight because most of these lakes take 5-10 mile hikes to get to.

>able to make fire from a few sticks
>throw meat onto fire to cook
>enjoy great meal
>sleep for the night next to fire
End of first day
Hello retard from /r9k/ here ironically, I was telling someone to get out but I remembered that lately I was thinking of asking you guys about the outside world. I don't dislike outside I just hate people and populated environments. I have thought about maybe the end of this year or sometime next year just packing a bag full of stuff and going out wandering somewhere.
Obviously that isn't a very fleshed out plan which is why I am asking here. I live in Australia and I know my country is one of the best for outdoors stuff in the world yet I have never done much outside mainly due to money issues or being busy but I am mostly free from those issues now.
>>868604
You're gonna get killed in Australia m8
>>868605
>/r9k/
You say that like its something I would care about
>>868604
You dis autist
I have a Gransfors Bruks Scandinavian Forest Axe which I've been using for a bit of wood splitting.
Wondering if it'd be worth getting a proper splitting axe. How much of a difference would it make?
It makes the difference that you go from being a VIKING to being a regular dude.
Do you really want to do that, son?
>>868480
It is ok, they make a splitting axe and a maul, so you can still be a VIKING as long as you buy the Granfors Bruks Splitting Maulâ„¢
>>868495
I'd just get the Splitting Axe. I like the curves on its handle more than the Mauls straight handle.
Anyone else just love swimming in a nice lake/river while innawoods?
>Get invited out on buddies boat on our beautiful river; swimming, wakeboarding etc.
N..no thanks, I'm b-busy that day with..projects..
>Get invited to an old coworker's family river lot to swim and bbq
Oh uh, I can't...I got overtime that day...
>tfw I don't know how to swim and have far, far too bad social anxiety to learn how as an adult
>tfw too uncoordinated to probably be able to anyway, like when I tried to learn as a kid
>that crushing fear as 9-year-old me tries to stay afloat but barely manages to
>that feeling when you're the kid in swim class who gets the special exceptions for distance and needs coaxing to jump off the dive board because you suck at it
Feels fucking awful, man.
So no I'm not swimming in any damn lake or river. I have this fox and the grapes thing going on where I pretend I hate getting wet or don't like cold water so people don't bug me about it.
Mainly use them for shitting in. Can't be bothered to carry around asswipe or a shovel to make a hole. So I just shit in water and let the water clean my ass.
I live in an area that's recently (on a geological scale) active and ho boy the river is the only thing i miss after moving to the big city.
What is the best material for extreme hot climates?
I want to know if a dry, desert climate material would work in a wet, humid climate.
Could a material be good for both?
There's so many combinations of cotton, polyester, nylon, aramid, rayon (50/50, 60/40, 65/25/10, 70/30, 100% cotton).
Then there's twill, battle rip, etc. I don't even necessarily need military BDUs but I really would like camo similar to 3 color or desert digital. I asked dozens of people and places and no one could give me a straight answer.
And would a soft shell or gore-tex be good for the night time desert?? I'd like to wear it in the snow, too.
If soft shell or gore-tex is what you recommend to begin with that would be grand because I'd like to save weight.
I've worn the same commando wool sweater in both -15F weather, and out Black Rock Desert in the intense sun.
Got a bit sweaty, but the lightest of breezes cooled me down well.
The answer is always wool.
>>868437
Ok I'll give you breakdown I used in the past with much cool.
If you have tents and sleeping bags for your trip I think your soft shell should be fine for sitting around camp fire at night and going for the 2am bush shit etc.
Day time and if you mobile get the following:
>Columbia UV sun shirt
Lose fitting sun resistant shirt for wearing over your T shirt or under garment of choice. Get a light colour like Tan or White stay away from Blue/Grey/Red as they get super warm because of the sun baking the colour.
>Pants
It kind of comes down to how you roll usually. I use Rapid Dry nylon pants with long/short leg conversion zips to make it into shorts if I want to go for a swim etc. Also has allot of pockets!
>Shoes/Boots
I always use desert boots that you can find almost anywhere. Trick is to use them with good breathing and sealing socks as you want to keep sand out and still be able to get warm/cold air in out of your feet. Thin cotton socks usually does it. Some say wool but seems to me it will make your feet take up allot of moisture and blister badly as soon as you take shoes of for the night.
>Hat/Buff
Get a hat to cover your dome. Be weary of mesh top hats as sun can still cook through your hair into your scalp. Rather go for light colour like tan/cream don't get white as it will fucking blind you from sun reflection off sand. Baseball cap with a buff or one of those 9/11 burka things should be more than efficient.
Soak your buff/jizz rag with water to keep your head cool when you traveling on foot. Do this only if you have spare water of course.
>WATER WATER CAMELBAGS BOTTLES FLASKS CONTAINERS PURIFIERS EVERYTHING YOU NEED NOT TO DIE.
>Sunblock High Factor SPF50 minimum. The spray can one's last for ever and has good distribution vs hand-lotion shit last time I was in desert I used the spf 75 and was fine.
Linen is the best fabric for hot weather.
anyone going to be in Uwharrie national forest until wednesday? I'm bored as hell and would love to meet up with someone
>>868288
Yes anon, I will be there. Meet me by this fireplace and bring some beers or whiskey. We can share stories, sing campfire songs and hold hands.
Bring lube
cmon I'm bored out of my mind
>>868288
Well I'm from Ophir, smack in the middle of the uwharries. Iiving in Raleigh now.
Don't think I can do Wednesday, and the weekend seems to be a washout with that storm rolling in.
Hit up my junk email up top, maybe we can arrange something sometime. Been looking for a hiking/ camp friend.
I'm currently trolling some owls with the old cup hand, mourning dove like call. Their really getting worked up. It's a gas. Anybody got their own trolling nature stories, tips, tricks? Flora welcomed as well as fauna
>>868267
I knock on my nieghbor's front doors at night and run and hide. They really get pissed after the second or third time! They are total dorks!
Does that count?
>>868275
Guess so. Are your neighbors chickens? 'Yoties are fun to fuck with too: "Awoowhooooo, whup whup yip yip yip yip." If you get three or four around a campfire calling it gets neat. And lighten up Francis.
Wow, I feel like I have a great new hobby to add to carin kicking, geoshitting , and spreading my old pennies around places where metal detector hobbyists do their thing.
This is legit pretty cool.
Please tell me what these are named I realy need their name
Look like plants to me OP
>>868078
This desu, one looks like a wilting flower
>>868077
Do your own homework, and GTFO this site until you turn 18.
Why the fuck is there no "middle way" type tent?
It's either a $50 Walmart tent like pic which is, despite its flimsiness, nice and easy to put up, or a $500 SuperUltra HikingBrand 50PRODOUCHE tent with a gorillion straps and poles and shit that needs a fucking degree in Tent Setting to put up.
So, what's a good middle way? Something not too heavy, not too flimsy, and not too complicated?
>>867929
Look at Dick's. I'm a non-paid shill for them, but they are great for the stuff between Walmart and REI. They have been having a lot of sales on tents lately too, especially Thursdays with their flash sales. Kelty and Marmot and then even nicer Coleman or their Field & Stream stuff.
The shit at REI is decent
I have this, passage 2 160 bucks.
Some budget Kelty tents get pretty good reviews
show me pictures of rainbows while being /out/ anons
>>867761
Sure, I have a few
>>867768
>>867774
What camping stove do you use for cooking while /out/?
I'm considering making one like pic related to use with my Trangia in case I run out of ethanol, but I'd like it collapsible. Any ideas?
>inb4 someone shows up with a $100 designer gas stove and claims superiority
>>867707
I use a primus express stove. It's super handy, packs small and is very convenient. However, I only use it for day hikes and the like as I enjoy open fires much more.
>>867711
>$100 gas stove
CALLED IT
a pot, some rocks and a few bits of dried up pine sap
Anyone make a kayak or canoe out of a tarp or plastic sheeting before? Anyone regularly use one?
I want a way to move from island-to-island on a slow-moving river, but still backpack back up the river without having to haul a boat. The idea is my friend and I would make sapling frames upon arrival, then leave the frames at our downriver point meaning we'd only need to haul the tarps back. So far this is the only option I can think of for being able to visit islands and sandbars along a waterway while still being able to hike 20-30 miles back to the vehicles.
OP here. I'll just post a few shitty example pics and vids in the meantime.
This vid is in Russian, but it's a pretty good looking boat and you can get the jist of it just from watching.

So a year or so ago I bought some climbing shoes. I had a work friend who took me climbing once and I kind of liked it, so I figured I'd make a small investment to be able to go more and enjoy it.
Except we never made time to go again despite talking about it. And now he doesn't work here anymore, nor does he talk to me. I promoted to supervisor which is kind of a great way here to become completely ostracized from activities outside of work even if you don't act like a dick.
There is one other supervisor who climbs somewhat frequently and does like to do /out/ stuff with others. I've kind of casually dropped hints that I am kind of looking for someone to climb with, like mentioning that I have a pair of climbing shoes I haven't even gotten to use yet, etc. But I dunno if he either doesn't pick up what I'm laying down or simply doesn't want to have to babysit someone. He and I went mountain biking once a couple years ago (only the second time I've mountain biked with a buddy, I usually go alone) and I really have no idea if he liked the company or not. He's a really friendly and energetic guy but it's not like he's invited me riding again.
I know this is a lame question but wtf do I do? I really want to try out the sport and would like to be able to at least be decent enough that I can go with someone else who is going. But, this guy already has climbing buddies he goes with and they are all way better than me. Am I just a burden if I ask? Is it annoying to have to teach someone? Should I just sell the shoes and give up on the idea?
TLDR How do people into climbing? It's not like mountain biking where I can just start doing it by myself and never need anyone else, which is pretty much anything else I do for fun. I don't really have any friends I hang out with outside of work.
>>867646
do a shit ton of pull ups on your finger tips using different grips for each pull up. flail your legs around while you do this. read books about climbing. translate strength training and book smarts to rockclimbing.
atleast for me, climbing is atleast 90% training
>>867646
So wait, the sport with the friendliest and nost helpful people in it and you cant find a friend to climb with?
How boring are you to be around? Or are you just one of those really uncoordinated types? You said you MTB'd with him, did you crash a lot?
Honestly OP you should probably just stick to what you know.
>>867669
don't listen to this guy, I heard he fell while climbing alone and got scared, didn't go outside for over a year.
