I didn't know where to post this, lol.

I take the trains late at night after work in Boston, and then walk home (20-ish minutes if I'm fast).

I've come across crazy people, typical aggressive heroin junkies, etc and I really want something to help me if I'm ever approached/attacked again.

Human pepper spray is illegal in Massachusetts and you need to get a firearms license and purchase it from a local gun shop to get it, which seems like a pain in the ass.

So if some crazy guy runs towards me looking for a fight, can I spray them in the face with bear mace and hope it works?

I was considering bear mace or a personal alarm (https://www.amazon.com/Vigilant-Personal-PPS22BL-Batteries-Activation/dp/B005E04MK0)

If mace is illegal im sure bear mace is. Its basically a small fire extinguisher of mace designed to spray out rather than shoot a stream like civilian mace
>>
Yes, bear spray will work on people.
But you want to be sure of the wind direction before you use it.

Authorities in Oregon were investigating the collapse of an iconic sandstone formation after video posted on Twitter showed state park visitors appearing to destroy it.

The department initially believed the formation's collapse was natural, saying in a Sept. 1 Facebook post that visitors were fortunate that no one was injured and that the event should serve "as a sobering reminder of the ever present dangers of our fragile coastal rocks and cliffs."

Then department officials saw a video that had been posted on Aug. 29 by David Kalas. Kalas, 19, had visited Cape Kiwanda Natural Area earlier that day with two friends, including an aspiring videographer who brought a drone along to capture the coast's scenery.

From a football field away they saw a group of eight to 10 people gather around the formation, known as Duckbill, Kalas told NBC News.

"They were trying to push it over," he said. "We thought nothing of it. It's sturdy. It's not going to break." Once the formation began wobbling, Kalas said, he and his friends sprinted over and confronted the group.

"They said one of their friends had broken their legs," he said, adding that the group described it as a "giant safety hazard." He said the group claimed that "they did a favor by knocking the rock down."

The formation was perched behind a fence in an area the parks department pleaded with visitors not to cross: Since 2009, seven people have died when the park's sandstone cliffs crumbled and they fell into the ocean or onto rocks.

Fuck yea!!

Ok /out/, I'm planning a road trip throughout Canada starting from Quebec, I'm planning to either take the bus to Manitoba and from there go on the thumb to Britain Colombia.

What are the must go places for camping I should go to? Plus general tips would be appreciated.

I'll probably find a steady job when it will be too cold outside too endure it, but I'm not a thin-skinned faggot either.

I'm prepare for complete wilderness, and I could survive in the wood for around 5-6 day straight, maybe more if I have a viable river nearby.

I would be down to meet up with some /out/ friendly peeps while my journey so shoot your info if you're down for it, we'll eat rice and try to hunt pheasant/squirrel with my slingshot.

I'll start the thread with general tips people gave me.

When you're camping and it's cold as fuck outside, put a few rock in your campfire. when the fire is dying, grab the rock, put more wood into your fire and put the rocks into a blanket.
The warm rocks can now be use to warm up your sleeping bag, so you can sleep.
Repeat the process if it's really cold. You'll have long nights, but you won't freeze to death.

When you're trying to get a lift in the city, put up some clean clothes in your bag and try to shave/clean your face if possible.

You don't want to look like a hippie or a bum if you want people to pick you up.

Still no luck with the chatterbaits. They were hitting a darker Mepps and dark Texas-rigged stuff so I tied on the black and blue one but still no interest. Maybe one day they will actually work, but not today. Zoom Candy Bug colorway-check it out! And if you don't have at least 20 Mepps, you are doing it all wrong.

>tfw too much work and not enough fishing
The upside is fall is coming, so work should slow down and it will be getting dark earlier so I can actually fish at sunset on a weekday and still wake up in time for work. Also fuck house hunting. I need to find a house and move so I can devote all of my time not working to fishing.

I was just trying to prove a point, saltwater fishing isn't as slow as the freshies here think it is. I've caught way more fish using artificials than live or frozen bait.

Hey /out/, I'm new to foraging, but it's something I wanted to get into forever.

I just started a couple weeks ago in the forest by my house. I've got a couple of books but it's still hard for me to identify plants. I guess it's something that just gets easier with experience.

But I was hoping someone could identify these plants for me?

I think it's some kind of fern? Maybe sweet fern?

Buy some darn Tough Vermont socks. I've worn pic related in all seasons with work boots on, and my feet don't stink, they don't hurt (good boots as well), and they're always perfectly warm or cool. I've had these socks for about two years, wearing them ~4 days a week for the last year and a half. They look like new, and fit super well. The only downside is the cost, 20$ a pair is shitty, but my god these have never failed.
>>
CF issue sock, 40% nylon 60% wool, wear one for warm weather or layer up for the cold. I've got a pair that hasnt worn out in ten years of use, these bad boys last forever and, because they have decent thickness, won't wear out in a year of rubbing against the inside of my boot

>Darn Tough
A couple of years ago I started getting wool socks after getting a job wear wearing work books for 12+hours a day is commonplace.
Going through multiple pairs of REI brand, Thorlo, Dickies Work, SmartWool, and finally Darn Tough.
Living in CA, the darn tough lightweight hiking sock is one of the best pair of socks I've ever owned. Whicks sweat a little better than REI's everyday socks and have survived the wash far better than the Thorlos or Dickies. Since it never gets very cold around here I shoot for thinner socks that way I have some options when it comes to what i can wear hiking weather it be running shoes or hiking boots and these fit the ticket for either scenario.
I'd recommend the brand to anybody who asks about wool socks in general.

I'm plannning a week long road trip up to Scotland in a few weeks, but I've never been to this stunning country before.
Any good reccommendations on things to do, places to see and places to stay?

Avoid Glasgow. Edinburgh is boring now since fringe is over with and all the foreigners and students have fucked off. Scotland's not a hard place to camp, even in the highlands, especially if you're as experienced as you are. Aberdeen is nice, I'd recommend going there for a day, great food. Sorry I can't speak much for hiking routes or campsites, I've never done it up in Scotland. Whereabouts are you from, OP? Your experience with the natives will vary wildly depending on where you're from.

My girlfriend and I just walked about 450km of the Scottish National Trail this summer. That was of course hiking, but still I'd say get up north, north of The Great Gap. A lot of people we met who where driving in Scotland recommended driving along the west coast, visiting isles and villages - particulary one named "Applecross". They also talked about Sandwood Bay, close to Cape Wrath (the most north-western tip of mainland Scotland.
My own best experience was walking a specific part of the route, I think it might have been on some trail named "the Affric Kintail Way". It was absolutely stunning and it eventually led us to the "Falls of Glomach" which I would also recommend visiting - following the quite dangerous path, leading down from the fall into the valley was quite an experience as well

Apologies if this seems like an /o/ question, but all the "truck guys" I've asked this to are either clueless or give extremely stupid advice. I figure the fellow rural posters here might have some actual experience.

I live in a very out-of-the-way area. As summer winds down and fall approaches, I've been seeing between 4 and 7 deer on or beside the road per DAY - sometimes I have to honk at them to get them out of where I park. I also see moose with some frequency, and even bighorn sheep with lesser frequency.

I have only been living here for about half a year, but while I love it, it's making me increasingly nervous. The speed limits around here are typically 70 miles an hour, and if they weren't, you'd never get anywhere. Simply driving slow everywhere isn't a realistic option - but I worry that it's just a matter of time before I catch a deer in my headlights at night (I have to drive around at night for work).

Are there any deer/grill guards that actually WORK? So many are flashy trash for 19 year olds that don't actually work. I've had mechanics tell me I'm better off without one, even ones secured at 4 points on the body. Is there a guard out there that will stop body damage at, say, 60 mph if you hit a deer? I expect some body damage if I hit a moose, those things are fucking huge.

If not, anything else I can do? Install a loudspeaker on the top of my truck and loop sounds of lions roaring?

ARB makes probably the best bullbar/winch bumper but they are pricey. The build quality is second to none though, you could probably blast through a deer with next to zero damage and they are modular, meaning if you were to somehow even manage to damage the bumper by hitting something enormouse like a moose, you would only have to replace that part of it and not the whole bumper itself.

If you smoke a deer/elk at 70, or even 60/50, it's going to hurt no matter what kind of bumper you have. I'd say the majority of the damage at those speeds comes from the animal being thrown over the hood and into the windshield rather than just the damage to the bumper/radiator/engine/etc.

Got a custom bumper on the F550.... 1/4" steel, heavy-wall tubing. Fucker's stout. Smoked an elk at about 35 last fall, tweaked the bumper down about 1". But that's a serious bumper on a lot more truck than a typical half-ton (or even 3/4-ton).

>Install a loudspeaker on the top of my truck and loop sounds of lions roaring?
Kek... so
>be me, 12-ish years ago
>test driving a pickup available in town
>good condition overall, priced right, but long-bed standard-cab and was looking for extended-cab short-bed
>see box with two dials under dashboard
>one dial is a standard off/volume
>other dial selects between "Fox", "Duck", "Frog", "Chicken", "Horse", "Cow", among others
>speaker under the hood somewhere
>pick the animal, turn up the volume, you get animal sounds through that speaker
I don't think it had "Lion" though.

Make sure your insurance is paid up, and pay attention on the road.
