>thinking about getting a mountain bike, what kind do you have and what brand is best?

depends what you wanna do and how much you want to spend.
I used to dirt jump for years and BMX, broke my wrist so I gave up. BMX but now I am bored and want to get back in to mountain biking.

not really sure what you want but I live in Vancouver and want to start hitting the north shore and also want to do long trail riding, so I'm looking for a possibly all mountaim style bike.

I make these spoons.
>>
>>856718
I have wanted to make spoons for some time. Do you pound them out and shape them yourself, or do you buy plain spoons and dress them up?
>>
>>856726
I myself bash/twist whatever shape I want. Some are plain old spoons just painted some are twisted. Depends on the type of bait I am trying to fake. I found a slightly twisted bright yellow with red/blue mix works great. Different anon by the way

Hey /out/. /k/ informed me that my question was better suited here.

How do you/ prepare for operating innadessert?
I'm going to be operating innadessert alone for the first time this weekend. I know it can be fairly dangerous and I was looking for some advice.
What kind of firepower should i bring?
How much food and water should a bring?
What kind of gear will i need?
Are there any safety precautions i should know?

Thanks for your advice /out/. Pic related is the Dessert. I plan on tearing through it all at once this weekend.

First of all, DO NOT ATTEMPT to weekend in a dessert without a combine harvester (see pic related), other than that, bring plenty of water obviously.

Truth.
>>
>>856621
>What kind of firepower should i bring?
A decent knife. And by knife I mean a good pocket knife or at most a small fixed blade not some big ass tacticool wannabe combat knife.

>How much food and water should a bring?
Depends on what you will be doing and how long you're going to be out. Personally I usually go through around 3-4 liters a day when hiking in the desert. Depending on what food you plan on eating you may need more for cooking. If you're car camping and weight is no issue just buy a bunch of gallon jugs and you should be fine.

>What kind of gear will i need?
Tent, tarp, sleeping bag decent boots, Water bottles and/or bladders. Whatever Cooking gear you need to prepare your meal.

>Are there any safety precautions i should know?
Don't be a dumbass. Learn to recognize the symptoms of heatstroke and dehydration and what to do if you experience them.(Move to shade and sip( Not chug) water). Also find out ahead of time where you'll be able to refill on water.

>>
>>856475
it' my first time going /out/ so don't shit on me for doing not much, but 10 km of bicycling in the woods/ crops

my aera is not flat also, lots of uphill and downhill

of course i expect doing much more, going for days and sleeping in the woods

How did fur trappers and other men that lived alone in the wilderness build their cabins? I mean I get how, but these guys were alone, how were they moving such big logs by themselves? Were they just really strong? My great grandfather was a fur trapper and while he was an extraordinarily strong man it still doesn't seem feasible that they did it by themselves.

You have to remember it was a way of life for these people to build stuff and work their asses off. They grew up building houses like this and they used their horses to help move the logs instead of their pals. Big hunks of dried pine also aren't that heavy.
>>
I imagine that some of them would have family, some would have had horses or donkeys that they could use to haul things. And they were tough from living a life of labouring.

It's pretty impressive regardless. Look at those roof logs, imagine getting those in place. It would require a generous application of improvised levers and pulleys, I would think.

Wood loses a shitload of weight once it is dry.

Would be heavy and hard work, but not impossibly by any means.

Look up the Maine hermit. He survived in the woods alone through petty theft, he would rob lake cabins and camps when they were empty.

Okay to start things off, I know that this is crazy. I'm 21 years and next year I want to bike across Canada to raise money for cancer. I want to start from the farthest point east and end in the furthest point west. I plan on starting my trip around the end of April or beginning of May. I don't know anyone else that wants to do it so I figured I would look here.

I would love to join you but I live in the UK and am tied down due to various complications.
Best of luck anon, it's an awesome thing you're doing, perhaps try asking on other outdoors/canadian/cancer trust websites and forums if you don't get a good enough response here.
Do you have a route planned out and enough money to make this happen? I'd love to do this sort of thing one day

Who's prepping for fly fishing this fall? Just made these over the weekend.making some hare's ears next.

I need to work fast, spent too much time tying a full box of nymphs and leech patterns for my uncle.

Also just bought a new 8'6" 5 wt. 4 piece so I can put it in a backpack.

Planning to do a few overnight stays in NH, VT, western Mass and maybe upstate NY where my uncle lives.

So I was wondering, what normal sized cot (that can hold a 6' tall person) can collapse into the smallest shape? I'm asking because I was wondering how easy it would be to take a cot in a backpack with a relatively small backpack. As I'm sure you can tell, I don't know what I'm talking about cot-wise, so that's why I'd like someone's opinion here.

shameful bump because I'm an eager man.
>>
Dont bother buying a cot just get a air mat if you really wanted. Weighs less and is more compact compared to a cot. A cot is meant for semi perm camping ie longer then a month.
>>
honestly op, get a decent rope hamac, these things are cheap as fuck and the rope can save your ass in a dire situation :) they fit everywhere! Carry a small tarp to put overhead and you have a waterproof shelter over ground level and its actually very confortable :D

Hey guys. I have a question that I need answered and I'm sure a lot of others would too.

I want to get /out/ more but my lifestyle doesn't necessarily allow it. I work a busy job (that I enjoy) and between that and social commitments I find it hard to get out.

Any tips to motivate me mroe or just be to be ready enough to go? I want to camp/hammock rather than just walk up hills.

Find some time and just go out you retard it's that simple
>>

Your lifestyle probably allows it, you just need to prioritize going out over being a social butterfly.
>>
>>855562
>I work a busy job (that I enjoy)
Just from that statement I can tell you're in America, you're always 25 miles away from the perfect camping place, make sure to plan ahead, make a huge date out of going out, and try to do it every weekend.

I have a pond on my property that is full of water from autumn until june. Then it dried up.
Im wondering if I dug down in the center I could hit some sort of water source and the pond would stay hydrated ..
I guess my real question is how do ponds form and would this even work?
theres no streams anywhere around the pond and its 100% naturally occurring

Here is a pic of pond when its hydrated
>>
Water dries up because it evaporates and forms because there's a depression there. You would have to dig really far down to even hit the water table and it wouldn't just spring forth and keep your pond filled.
>>
Theres a pond about every 1/4 mile in my area.
Most were dug to water livestock in the old days.
Some are fed by springs and are full year round, some are seasonal like yours.
I have a small pond myself that fills up from water seeping out of the mountainside during the rainy season- but its been dry for months.

Its possible that you could hit an artesian well- that's a well that because of geology the water is pressurized and will come to the surface on its own once a pathway is drilled for it.
Most likely though you would just get a normal well- water level would be below the surface and need to pumped out.

Springs/artesian wells are common here in central Georgia, I would research your area to find out if its even common.

Cost would be a couple grand to drill it

Hey there, not sure if this is the right board for this, but screw it. I am a casual preper and i`m having a hard time finding good quality survival equipment. Currently i`m looking for an emergency water filter. With so many different brands I have no clue which is better.
Any suggestions to a good product or website would be a real help.
