I'm heading the FUCK /out/ into the world to find peace. I've been diagnosed with stress and extremely high blood pressure at the age of 23, on top of a depression and an existential crisis.
What are the bare essentials I might need? This is what I have planned to bring so far:
>passport
>as much money as possible
>clothes
>first aid kit
>water containers
>cooking/eating gear
>Leatherman Kick (hopefully customs won't take it since it's babbys first multitool)
>firesteel
>tarp
>rope
>sleeping bag
Anything I've forgotten? I'll be picking up food on the go when I'm not WWOOF'ing.

Arrangements have been made, and tickets bought. I'm shipping out on the 20th of January for a year in Japan. And that's just the beginning.

Just make sure you find something other than a bus to die in. That one's been done already.

Fjallraven is nice but overpriced.
I have this and couldn't be happier.
Any unorthodox tips?

Pro-hiking-tip: Any cliffs, rivers, or other hazards, you find while hiking are great places for you to kill yourself.
Hope this helps. :D

cover the big ziploc bag you put used toilet paper in with ductape so that way you don't have to look at your shitty paper each time you go to get it or in your bag

use pine cones instead of tp and then you don't have to pack it out.
or grass. but pine cones are better, imo.
my cousin swears by snow, but that stung my o-ring too much.

Have any of you encountered bears while out?
We have some black bears here but haven't encountered any.
Is carrying bear spray too paranoid?
No. In all the times I've gone hiking, camping and backpacking in good ol' BC, I've never once seen any trace of a bear and I don't think anyone else on this board has either. Ok I got that out of my system. If you're going alone it's a good idea to carry something to protect yourself with from bears, bearspray probably being your best option. With 1 or more companions you don't have to worry about it.
Yeah. Almost always go alone. Never really thought about it until just recently. I'm the kind of guy who has the shitty luck of being the statistic of the one bear attack in the last 5 years
I see bears every now and again but I live rural on Canada's east coast and walk in the woods everyday.
They always run away from me except once when it was a she bear with cubs who directed them up a tree and stood guard at the base of it.
They are normally running away when I see them, only rarely do I notice them before they've noticed me.
Like trapping and shit like that?
Why is OP such a faggot?

Have anyone gone hiking/camping in Japan as a foreigner? Did you have any trouble bringing gear such as knives or hatchet with you?
I'm heading there for a year, and I'd like to bring at least my hatchet and my Leatherman Wave. But I don't want to get in trouble with the local authorities because of it.
>>860423
Don't even bother bringing that stuff here. They are super strict about that dumb shit. Got stationed here and it's fuckin terrible for anyone who loves the outdoors. Stuck in Tokyo basically and it takes at least 2 hours to get anywhere, and all of the pretty places to go have a million fuckers there already. Can't wait to get back to the states.
>>860794
As far as I can gather, I'm allowed to have them if they're between 6cm and 15cm blade-wise, as long as I have "justifiable reason".
Still, Imma call the embassy and ask if I can get a permission or something in case of super racist police.
>don't let servicemen have knives
>do let black servicemen impregnate women
Hey /out/,
I am planning to hike the Appalachian Trail starting in mid March of next year. I am a complete retard and have had no camping experience besides sleeping in a tent in my yard when I was younger.
Hit me with any and all things pertaining to successfully hiking the trail (all opinions welcome)
>gear to procure (budget is flexible, I have no gear yet whatsoever)
>skills to learn (I quite literally know nothing about camping)
>books to read/pertinent articles or blogs
>stories/personal experiences on the AT greatly welcomed
I have been perusing /out/ a lot the past two months to try to get an idea of various products, experiences, etc. but I figured a thread dedicated to the AT would be more directly helpful for me and others interested in hiking it.
Again, any and all opinions are welcome, I am just looking for more of a starting off point in my preparations.
Start off by accepting that you will never set foot on the AT.
Why would you go from zero hiking/camping experience straight into a 2000 mile slog? It's almost like you want to have a miserable time and quit by the end of the first week. At least start off with a 2-3 night wild camp for fucks sake. You need to build up to it. Do you even know if you're of sound physical and mental faculties to achieve such a task?
I guess if you're determined to be retarded, try to be as lightweight as you possibly can and make sure your navigation skills are in order.
off to a good start
The weather's finally getting colder, and I'm getting amped up to do a lot more winter camping this year. I camped out a couple of times last year in ~15*F weather, and found that it was pretty decent, but I want to have a better setup this year. Here's my gear:
-Teton LEEF 0*F sleeping bag
-Klymit static V insulated mat, R-value of ~4
-Alps Lynx 1-man tent (actually a 3-season tent)
-old Sigg stove that needs to be replaced
I'm pretty well set on warm clothing and boots; I'm just looking for some gear advice. I sleep with my dog in my sleeping bag with me, which helps with warmth overnight, but I should definitely get a larger sleeping mat, new stove, and a 4-season tent.
Recommendations would be very welcome.
I'm thinking of related for a tent - Alps Tasmanian 2.

>Winter camping
>>860342
My only recommendation is to stop pretending you camp in the winter or ever.
Get a sleeve to put over your sleeping bag.
That way condensation will soak the sleeve and not your bag.
Be careful when waking up, if you hit the side of your tent, ice rains in your face. The perfect morning wakeup
Also bring a fucking shovel
Ultralight thru hiker thread. No fat fuck amateur low mile weekend hikers allowed. Lets talk ultra light gear, and plans for 2017. I'm hiking the CDT.
the pack i'm getting. Hyperlite Mountain Gear Windrider 3400. Costs a whopping $350

lazt b8 thread is lazy.
I'm learning knots but most of them are useless and just showy garbage (think that one Portlandia sketch).
Which knots are most useful for you fellow outdoorsmen?
>>859715
Bowline on a bite
Half hitch (Kinda a knot)
Square Knot
Clove Hitch (Not really a knot)
Running Bowline
I recently make a rope ladder out of bout 20 bowlines on a bite. They're useful for pulling we use that knot pulling in hardlines to winch cable underground works pretty neat only seen it break once.
>>859715
My fishing knots:
Overhand (end of line to prevent slips)
Spider Hitch (rigging)
FG (leaders)
20-warp Clinch (my go-to knot for hooks and swivels)
Easy Snell (circle hooks)
Temp rope ladder: Marline Spike Hitch
