let's talk about backpacks.

backpacks, briefcases, duffels, good luggage combinations and brands. also discussion of different types of bags and their ergonomic strongpoints; which bags fit which carried tech; etc.

i know this is from reddit, but no reddit-tier edc circlejerking or bag bragging allowed.

i got btfo'd out of /g/ in record time, can you guys help me out? i need a new pack for my school stuff because i actually have textbooks this semester and my old bag sucks for it. i also wanted to talk in general, but i already got yelled at on /g/ so i'll expose my thinly veiled request thread for what it is now.

anyone have any suggestions for something like cocoon packs, but translated to pockets instead of straps? i need a bag that has good compartmentalization, but i don't like the general style of the cocoon bag itself. also, cocoon is a bit expensive for me since i already have a dedicated /out/ bag for when i go hiking and camping.

the reason i need good organisation is my part time job is IT and maintenance stuff at my university. i am, in sorts, on call for many hours at a time, so i carry my schoolwork and laptop around as well as a multitool, a socket set, music gear for jogging, and a rainjacket basically all the time. i broke a mouse the other day and decided that i need an upgrade in size, strength, and organization. my current bag is a noname bag i got at a goodwill

all that said, i've been checking out the timbuk2 rogue. however, i don't know if i am paying for the 'style' or if the quality warrants the price. i like the idea of a floptop so i can get going quickly, but the one compartment style is what led me to break my mouse, not to mention pencils every day. i've also looked at targus a lot but with how cheap they are i have doubts about durability

How am I supposed to use a rain cover while still having my tent or sleeping pad strapped to the top/bottom of my bag?
59 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
You can buy, or make a larger cover, or have a dry bag for the tent, and leave it outside the cover. You may need to make holes in the bottom of the rain cover, so you can still lash the tent to the outside.

I solve this issue by using a hammock and not needing a tent or sleeping pad.
>>
>>858936
My pack has two strips of webbing with buckles on the bottom. The problem is that the buckle terminates on the bottom of the pack, so a rain cover would cover it. I'm thinking that I could maybe add another buckle, but on the back of the pack towards the bottom, that way t should really interfere with the rain cover.
>>
>>858920

You pack sleeping bag and inflatable pad inside the back.

So I kill rabbits a lot.
I live in suburbia and they get super docile, so I go out at 3AM with an airgun and can bag like 10 in a night with nobody noticing.
I figure theyre pests so its fine.
I dont want to waste them so I keep the feet. I have a bag of like 50 feet.

Light, durable, and more reasonably priced unlike the heavy fjallraven shit that everyone seems to tout around here. 400 pounds for some heavy, stuffy pants? No thanks. I can get good pants from arc'teryx for less than 200 bucks and pack twice as many pairs and they'll last just as long

Might as well ask here...
Getting a presentation on GPS use together. Want to cover the basics, clear up some of the confusion people have with it and go over some of the acronyms people find confusing. 1-hour presentation.
Feedback is welcome.

Things i'm covering, in the general order i'm covering them:
>GPS System: Quick summary of how it works, who's in charge.
>Other systems: GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, but focusing on US's GPS
>3 pieces to get a fix: Almanac, Ephemeris, Time; why it takes 15-minutes to get a cold-fix, and why phones are faster (download almanac/ephemeris from network)
>Sources of error: SA, Multipath, Constellation/HDOP
>Spheroid/Datum - "Shape of the surface", and why it's important when using a map
>Increasing accuracy with more data: WAAS/EGNOS, AGPS, adding other country's systems
>Probably touch on GPS-receiver vs. Phone - Screen size, network, software/apps, mounting options/durability
>Receiver basics - It knows where it is, what now? Explain routes, waypoints, tracks
>Augmenting that with mapsets - POI's, birds-eye/raster images
>UNITS! Decimal degrees vs. DMS, MGRS, etc. "Like feet vs. inches", different ways to describe a point in space
>Using GPS "in the field" - Magnetic vs. true north with a compass and map, degrees vs. cardinal directions
>With a map, making sure the datum is the same (WGS84, NAD27, etc)
>Touch on some of the advanced/computer features - download to Google Earth
>Some things to keep in mind when shopping for a GPS - features like external micro-SD storage, mounting options, map compatibility (OpenStreetMap, OEM)
>Other devices that use GPS - SPOT/PLB, Garmin Rino radios
>Leave some time for Q&A at the end

Hello /out/ I thought we could have a thread about assholes we've run across in our various outdoor experiences

>be me past month

>these assholes are screaming across the camp for no reason well past 2:00 am blasting music like they're at a fucking frat party
>Literally wake up half the campgrounds.
> I understand having a good time around a campfire and having laughs and making some noise but the volume these people were yelling at seemed like they were almost intentionally just trying to piss people off.

If you don't want obnoxious partners at got camp you need to go deeper inawoods than you are going.

I can't believe you thought a "nature brought to you" campsite wouldn't include this element on Labor Day weekend.
>>
>>857152
I work at a State Park in NorCal, and almost every weekend during peak season we get at least one noise complaint exactly like yours. The perps are usually drunk Hispanic families or drunk white trash. It's usually not just to piss people off (until campers or Rangers tell them quiet down). They're just too out of their minds to care about quiet hours.
>>
Monday I left camp for an hour for supplies (beer). Upon my return, a guy and two women were just getting done stealing everything easily portable.

I bade them return my stuff, which they did, the women giggling, and the guy looking hostile.

Why are bags with MOLLE considered cringey? I'm not talking tacticool camo shit, just MOLLE. To me it seems like an OK solution for attaching whatever shit you need, making a small bag more versatile.
99 posts and 17 images submitted.
>>
>>858430
they add a lot of weight, you dont actually need it, almost everyone buys it for the looks and doesnt use it. They were originally designed in the military for attaching kit to the front of your plate carrier. For a backpack, they literally serve no advantafe to just putting the shit in the backpack
>>
A few strips of MOLLE or webbing is handy to have for attaching things to your hiking pack.

A hiking backpack covered in it is gratuitous and try-hard.
>>
>>858446
Tent, sleeping bag etc... you don't stuff that inside.
How about if you need to carry a hatchet, or a bundle of rope. Wet, dirty shoes. I know there are bags which provide (some) attachment points, but you can't possibly argue that this isn't more versatile. Oh you need an extra pouch on this trip? No problem, just slap one up.

Also, why would that couple of strips add a lot weight?

To me this seems like an overreaction, honestly. I get why people hate the tacticool crowd, but you really don't look like a wannabe soldier with a bag like pic related.
