Anybody been to some interesting lesser-known hiking spots lately?

I recently went hiking at the Porcupine Mountains in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I was completely shocked how gorgeous the U.P. was. It really felt like a good wilderness experience.

Also I've been reading about Dolly Sodds wilderness in West Virginia lately. Look it up, looks gorgeous.

What have you seen lately?

Dove season just started up in my state (PA), and I've already bagged a few. However, as someone who is fairly new to this type of wing shooting, I was wondering if anyone had some good tips/strategies. For example:
>benefits of a sitting in a blind vs. working tree lines
>best time of day to go out
>decoy usefulness/placement
>etc.
Any input will be much appreciated.

Do you eat them? Aren't them like rats with wings?
>>
>>854580
Yeah, you eat them (I haven't personally, but my father reminisces about eating dove all the time). Though mourning doves probably aren't the "cleanest" birds, you're probably thinking of pigeons (those rat doves you see in cities, different species)
>>

My best advice is to just go out and try it. Find some private ground if possible. I usually set out a couple mojo decoys and stay hidden in some tall grass or weeds next to a field of corn or milo stubble and wait for birds to show up. I prefer to hunt in the early morning and I'll typically be in my spot 30 minutes before sunrise. Evening hunts 2 or 3 hours before dark can be productive, but this time of year it can get pretty hot. I'm in Kansas though. It helps to hunt with a group of people to cover more area on the larger fields. And a dog makes it easier to find dead birds.

Hey /out/, finally after a couple days back I come to you with stories of the trail rider. A couple weeks ago I started a thread about taking my nonbiological quad uncle on the GA section of the AT. We've made a couple local news articles.

A few days ago I went on a camping trip with a few friends and we decided to play some camping games. Games like Black Magic, with a really stupid solution.

Then one of the guys clapped in his hands a few times, slapped his knees and tapped his shoulders and said that he just "clapped 3 horses". Then he did some other combinations and said that he clapped 1 horse that time. Any of you know the solution to this game? It's been cracking my brain for days.

Pic unrelated.

So I'm thinking the claps and taps are irrelevant. I think how many words the person says after they do the claps and stuff is the answer to how many horses there are. So the guy said "Clapped 3 horses" which is 3 words.
Make sense?
>>
>>854241
So he clapped 3 horses when he said he clapped 1 horse?

I'm a good for nothing who used to love nature but since i moved into the big city i forgot the calmness of being in woods. I have never hiked once in my life and want to get startet.

What are some must have equipment for a rookie with decent price?

Good shoes/boots.
Something comfortable with excellent traction.
Actual footwear will vary by season/location/terrain.

A good backpack.
Again comfortable, but sturdy. If you're just doing day hikes, something like you'd use for school.

A good knife.
I mean something really good, k bar tier.

If you slip down a ravine and break a leg- the difference between making a splint to stabilize your fractured femur and crawling out or just laying there unable to move and dying could be the choice in what knife you bought.

Second this op. A good knife is important, dont be adraid to splash $200+ on a good knife, bakcpacks are aldo fucking expensive fpr good ones, make sure you research before buying anything. Good sleeping bag if youre going overnight, good tent/ flyye.
Get a good waterproof boonie as well, you wont regret it op

Is it okay to go camping alone?

I mean, socially. And logisticaly. I'm just going car camping about 5 or 7 miles off the highway.

I've been telling a couple folks that I'm going camping this weekend alone and I'm getting wierd looks.

I go camping alone almost every weekend if I can. Who cares what other people think, the point is to get away from other people isn't it?

I don't have anyone to tell though or I would just to be safe.

Camping with others is fun, every one needs to solo camp too.

Don't use military sleeping bags.

Sure they are cheap, warm and durable, but they are also heavy and spacious.

You are better off buying a quality civi bag second hand like I did. Pic is of a sleeping bag I bought from a Salvation Army Store.

Does rockhouding count as /out/? I don't think I've ever seen a thread about it, but I'm not in here every day.

Here's some "bacon" agate and Ulexite I collected on Sunday. I'm planning on going back out this weekend to look for petrified algae in the same place. Luckily, I live in a state with plenty of areas of geological interest.

What about you guys? Where do you like to go? What do you look for?

I went out camping along the River Tay recently and I found a lot of granite chunks with what I think is malachite running through them. Now I've got one of the chunks sitting next to a polished bit of malachite and a piece of copper on my shelf. There's a beach next to Culzean castle I used to spend a lot of time combing when I was younger, you'd find some nice stones there quite often. Mostly agate though.

I'm hoping to take a trip to the Cairngorms soon to look for some Cairngorm smoky quartz.
>>
Ugh, this is glorious stuff. I personally would like to get into rockhouding. I don't quite have the knowledge of tools yet to contribute too much to the thread.

I live pretty close to Murfeesboro, Arkansas. I went digging at the Crater of Diamonds State Park when I was really young. We did a terrible job with our rented tools and I was with my old grandma so we didn't find much other than your basic small things, jasper, quarts, ect. We did end up going through the dirt next to a couple that found at least three extremely tiny diamonds along with a bunch of other gorgeous pieces of rock. They probably owned a shop and went hunting quite often.

I recommend looking for a local gem and mineral society. They should be able to help you out. It helps to have someone that knows what they're talking about. If you are a college student or live near a college, they likely have a geology club you could talk to. I'm a chemistry guy and he's an engineer student, so we're amateur geologist at best. It helps to have someone who is more knowledgeable. If nothing else, you should be able to find guide books specific to your area that give you a general idea what may be where. Unfortunately, they're often out of date, so you have to be careful, and you should research the area you intend to go to first, so you don't wind up pulling up to a strip mall when you were hoping to find a deposit of amethyst like I did.

My rockhounding friend's grandmother has a PhD. in geology, and it's helpful, especially with identification, if we find something weird.

You don't need much to get started, gloves, a shovel, and an idea where to go is all. It's nice to have a way to break rock, but not necessary. We use a combination of a chisel and a pickaxe when necessary. Note: You NEED to be wearing safety glasses if you are breaking rocks, they can fragment quite violently. If you don't have eye pro, you shouldn't be breaking.

The other big thing I recommend is finding out what is local to the area, and researching pictures of that particular item unpolished and uncut. It sucks to pass over something, then realize later you should have grabbed it.

It's a scientifically interesting hobby that's cheap. Other than the cost of gas, you can find interesting, sometimes valuable, samples for free. The guy I mentioned previously uses some of what we find in jewelry making.

Canadian here so... Yeah.
Anyway where I go the first part is crowded often 200+ people in a square mile; but after a hour or so you get to a decent "wilderness" feeling but that is far from what I am use too. Lately my old spot sitting on top of a cliff has become crowded so I am forced to walk more and more into the bush. (not complaining I enjoy hiking) but when my old fishing spot on the river has become polluted I am quite bitter about others going where I go. I've now started hiking up river 3-4 hours+ to do my outings and all that. Hope they don't go to my beaver dam where I go stealth camping alot... If they do I am going to flip shit. Only me and a couple of mates know the spot. Nice part thou is fads will pass and people wont be so out so thats nice.
